"The bubbling synth soundscape Jay creates becomes a place of solace, where she tries to shake off her concerns; thankfully she leaves plenty of space for others to not only relate, but to join in on the dance party. ...  a welcome return into the colourful mind of Jay."
CBC Music on "Eckhaus Latta"

“a woozy bedroom pop track that sets Jay's infinitely relatable lyrics to an infectious beat driven by arpeggiated synths” Exclaim! On “Excuses”

“a hooky slice of honest indie-pop.” The Line Of Best Fit on “Undertow”

“Elements of dream-pop collide masterfully with lo-fi hip hop, and 60's pop stylings unite with surf-rock tones to name but a few.” Earmilk on “Peanut Butter Song”

MORE ABOUT “NAME YOUR PRICE”
“On its face, ‘Name Your Price’ feels like a love song, but there is something a little more sinister woven in,” says Maddie Jay of her new track, available everywhere today. “Throughout my life, I've found myself jumping from one intense relationship to another, persistently seeking to be chosen by people who are not offering their love to me freely. My previous attempts at writing love songs often felt a bit insincere and incomplete, so, in this song, I made a conscious decision to bring that part of me to the forefront.

“The song is about the relentless and high stakes pursuit of commitment and validation, often at the expense of my own happiness within the relationship. When your entire sense of self-worth hinges on whether you've 'won' someone over, the pressure to keep them around can feel like a matter of life or death.

“I produced this song over a tape loop that I made with some friends and I love how the cyclical, relentless nature of it mirrors these cycles I find myself in over and over again.”

Today, HOMESHAKE — the long-running solo project of Toronto-based musician Peter Sagar — releases his second album of 2024, Horsie, via Dine Alone Records. "This album is mostly about being on tour, and was mostly written while on our first tours back from COVID lockdowns,” says Peter. “It was strange to go back after so much time off, but gave me some clarity on the experience and my place in it."

In celebration of the album’s release, HOMESHAKE hosted an album listening and music video screening event yesterday in LA at Brain Dead Studios.

MORE ABOUT HOMESHAKE
HOMESHAKE is the expression of how Peter experiences the world and the sounds he wants to hear in it. His sound is often imitated but has proven to be entirely his own; textural and profound, uniquely honoring his diverse influences but adrift within its own transportive imagination. Horsie employs various textures influenced by artists like Four Tet and My Bloody Valentine, the rhythmic forms of D’Angelo and Sade, and moments of ambient Americana found in the works of Ry Cooder. Peter approaches every album with the same frame of mind, composing purely for the joy of the moment without consideration to potential commercial reception. Now on his seventh album, a trip through the Homeshake catalog is one of evolution, reflection, self-love, and a clear-eyed realism about the world and a longing for the gentler place it could be.

Today, Nova Scotia’s Rose Cousins shares the new single, “Forget Me Not,” her first release on Nettwerk. The gorgeous piano-driven ballad serves as the first introduction to Rose’s upcoming body of work to be released with her new label.

“Forget Me Not” was born as Rose watched seasons come and go while she, and the rest of the world, sat in forced stillness during the pandemic. She shares, "I became fascinated with each new budding, blooming thing, and every returning songbird. It all felt novel and it stirred a desperate desire to soak in every moment of the fleeting spring and summer, as if I might not get the chance again, wanting to remember it and wanting to be remembered in it."

Ever the emotional explorer, Rose Cousins’ songwriting plumbs the depths of the human condition. Her work has garnered her two JUNO Awards (2013’s We Have Made a Spark & 2021’s Bravado), two Canadian Folk Music Awards, eleven East Coast Music Awards and one Grammy Award nomination (2018’s Natural Conclusion), along with praise from the likes of the CBC, No Depression, LA Times, Associated Press, Billboard, Folk Alley, and NPR, who raved “Cousins’ disarmingly fluid vocal tone has the ability to convey the most internalized feelings without an ounce of fuss.” Over the years, she has shared stages with Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jann Arden, Kathleen Edwards, Joe Henry and Anais Mitchell, and her music has fittingly underscored scenes from notable TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Fire Country, Batwoman and Heartland.

Stay tuned for more music and news from Rose Cousins.
