“[a] distinctly modern take on folk music” - The New York Times
“Dunya" is a triumphant articulation of Mustafa’s vision, which he once described as “inner-city folk music.” The Toronto Star

“the songs feel so personal, it seems as if your heart is breaking alongside the speaker” - The Face

“Lilting guitar meets the Sudanese oud; straightforward piano melodies meet polyrhythmic Arabic chanting. The result is a bedrock upon which Mustafa can tell his own particular kind of folk tales” CBC Music

“‘Dunya’ is a Gorgeous Treatise on Rage and Faith” - Rolling Stone

“Name of God” Video Still

Mustafa releases his debut album Dunya today. The album marks his first full-length project following his 2021 project When Smoke Rises, which was acclaimed by the likes of the New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and more. The album marks the intersection of Mustafa’s art and activism, the latter of which has most notably seen him produce two installments of his Artists For Aid concert series, which have taken place in New Jersey and London this year and featured the likes of 070 Shake, Blood Orange, Clairo, Daniel Caesar, Earl Sweatshirt, Faye Webster, FKA twigs, King Krule, Nicolas Jaar, Nick Hakim, Omar Apollo, Ramy Youssef, Stormzy, Yasiin Bey and more across the two events, in addition to Mustafa himself. The album’s release coincides with a stunning live performance of “Name of God” that finds Mustafa performing alongside Micah Preite (guitar) and Kibrom Birhane (masenqo).

Despite only being released today, Dunya arrives alongside significant critical acclaim -- praised by the likes of The Face and Kinfolk, both of which currently feature Mustafa on the covers of their current issues, in addition to the Associated Press, Rolling Stone, and Teen Vogue as well as a special sit-down conversation with UK favorites Chunkz & Filly on cultural harmony and the album’s larger themes of personal growth. Dunya’s release also coincides with the final installment of a series of live conversations that Mustafa has been hosting around Europe and North America with special guests. After speaking with Daniel Caesar in Toronto, Ramy Youssef in Los Angeles, Anok Yai in Paris, and Dua Lipa in London, Mustafa will host an intimate, sold-out event this evening in New York City where he will discuss the themes of Dunya in conversation with Angelina Jolie.

Speaking about Dunya, Mustafa shares that he is “trying to preserve and celebrate the ordinary life in the hood,” a notion that is beautifully exemplified in a song like “SNL.” But Dunya, which roughly translates from Arabic to “the world in all its flaws” is also an interrogation of his faith and lifelong relationship with Islam, something that Mustafa has referred to as “the longest, most peculiar relationship in my life.” This examination is evident on a song like “I’ll Go Anywhere,” which on surface examination reads as a folk song, albeit one that interpolates a melody his parents sang to him as a child and prominently features the oud, a Middle Eastern string instrument that folds seamlessly into the record’s unique, rich atmosphere paired with vocal contributions from Rosalía. This effortless mixture of disparate elements that seemingly shouldn’t work together, but ultimately do, speaks to the power of Mustafa’s work as an artist.

Today, Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Leif Vollebekk releases his brand-new album, Revelation. To celebrate, a limited number of lucky fans will get to see Leif perform an intimate album release party solo pop-up show in London, UK on Friday, September 27.

Recorded at both Sunset Sound in Los Angeles and Dreamland in Woodstock, New York, Revelation is both ethereal and grounded, evoking a deep sense of introspection. The 11 tracks on Vollebekk’s Revelation blend narrative lyrics with one-take lead vocal performances, cinematic arrangements, rich soundscapes, and lush orchestration. Influenced by explorations of Carl Jung’s I Ching, alchemy, and the unknown, Vollebekk crafts an organic, earthy reflection on nature—water, stars, mortality—while contemplating life’s ever-changing present, infused with existential doubt and the search for meaning.

An artist’s artist with many colleagues as admirers, Vollebekk – who self-produced and played piano, guitar, bass, B3 organ, harmonica, accordion and Moog synthesizer on Revelation – compiled an impressive supporting cast that speaks to the caliber of musicianship and feel of the recordings, including legendary drummer Jim Keltner, notable steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar (Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Rod Stewart), and revered bassist Shahzad Ismaily. His other album collaborators included artists Angie McMahon and Anaïs Mitchell on background vocals. The album was mixed by Tchad Blake (Tom Waits, Arctic Monkeys, Tracy Chapman) and mastered by Greg Calbi.

Today, TAURO, the collaboration between jazz pianist and singer-songwriter Cynthia Tauro and Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene), share their debut single “Great Minds”. The duo found its genesis in the summer of 2022 during the uncertainty of the pandemic. Brendan coming from the indie rock world, and Cynthia from the Toronto jazz world, having just released her debut album.

The laid-back alternative R&B track speaks to a long lasting love between two people. Of the track, TAURO reflects, “They know they shouldn’t be together, but somehow the feeling of them still lingers”. Combining R&B drums with Cynthia’s soothing harmonies, layered with Brendan’s vocals, “Great Minds” harkens back to the days of trip-hop and finds itself in the spirit of such legendary groups as Air and Zero7.

“Great Minds” arrives with a stunning video from animator Jared Sales, and is distributed by Arts & Crafts.

MORE ABOUT TAURO
Cynthia Tauro has been active in the Toronto music scene for the better part of the last decade, playing primarily in the jazz circuit. Shortly after completing her degree in jazz performance at Carleton University, she released a debut full-length titled Moments. It was met with modest acclaim but more importantly it introduced her to some heavy hitters in the scene like Guido Basso, Robi Botos and Terry Clarke.

Fast forward a couple years and a few hundred gigs later, including a stint in the stage production of Mama Mia, Cynthia was looking for some new and untapped avenues to explore. She sparked a friendship with Brendan Canning in 2022 at Field Trip Music Festival in downtown Toronto and immediately felt a spark as the music of Lucy Dacus played in the background. The conversation quickly turned to writing songs together and it was clear a path was being laid out.

Cynthia began coming over to Brendan’s home for impromptu jams while the two tried to figure each other’s musical worlds out. In Brendan’s words, “It wasn’t until Cynthia started playing what she called ‘intervals’ that I truly started to see where we could connect on a deeper level.”  Those ‘intervals’ would eventually become the song “Great Minds”.

This fruitful partnership is already scheming for the future. Multiple recording sessions with Spencer Muscio (Jessie Reyez), Kintaro Akyama (Birds of Bellwoods), Juwayon Clarke (Daniel Caesar), and Little Scream mean there’s more music on the way in the very near future.

MORE ABOUT BRENDAN CANNING
Brendan Canning is the co-founder of multi JUNO Award winning, 2x Polaris Music Prize nominated internationally acclaimed group Broken Social Scene who have just celebrated their twenty year anniversary. He has three solo albums under his belt and has been part of numerous bands over the last three decades including hHead, Len, By Divine Right and Cookie Duster. Canning's film credits span Half Nelson, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, the Netflix series Spinning Out and more.

Quietly, he’s known as the “Butter Tart Guy” from the 90s smash hit, “Steal My Sunshine” and also the DJ who’s played every bar, warehouse, backyard, booze can and roof top since 1998. Today he splits his time between Tauro, Broken Social Scene, composing for film, and music director at the Drake Hotel in Toronto.
