Today, Meko Brain (the fantastic new solo project from Mike O’Brien) releases his debut LP, Wonderment, out via Victory Pool Records. Wonderment is a picture of economy: the words, arrangements, and instrumentation are all directly aimed at serving the song, whose inner core is formed by O'Brien's clean, mellow acoustic guitar alongside melodic, gently probing basslines (care of Zeus sideman and Yaehsun's Jason Haberman), and the wonderful Ringo-meets-Levon Helm drumming of the legendary Don Kerr (Ron Sexsmith, Rheostatics). This stage of the album was masterfully recorded by Gavin Gardiner (MOONRiivr, Wooden Sky) at his All Day Coconut Studios, home to many recent projects coming out of Toronto and beyond.

A product of the pandemic, Wonderment reflects O’Brien’s desire to focus on what’s most important in life. “Songwriting, in some ways, is like a check-in with yourself,” he says. “Are you doing your best? Are you showing up for those you love?” Even a cursory listen to these songs will attest to these themes; the album's warm sound is mirrored in its vast empathy, positivity, and self-awareness. Rendered in pleasingly sunny vintage leaning hues, masterfully dressed in muted electric guitars, glistening, lightly trippy keyboards, woodwinds, tight, subtle backing vocals, and mixed by Robbie Lackritz (Feist, The Weather Station), Wonderment is a veritable feast for the ears.

Today, Meko Brain is also sharing the new single, “Say The Word”. “I found that during the pandemic I was forced to contend with myself and how I relate to the people I’m closest to in a very real way,” says O’Brien. “Being quarantined with the family you start to consider every action and how it affects them. ‘Say The Word’ is just me directly reflecting on that reality and knowing that the words you choose can have an impact in both positive and negative ways.  Expressions of love can be shown in so many different ways but sometimes the most direct way is to say the word.”

MORE ABOUT WONDERMENT
Album opener “Anyone Else's Eyes” features patiently unfurling nylon-string guitar chords and a hushed, earnest vocal espousing the merits of a multi-faceted worldview. A fitting introduction for an artist whose own multifacetedness, brings to mind both Canadian contemporaries such as Sandro Perri, Michael Feuerstack, and Peter Elkas, as well as history's true titans of song.

Whiffs of The Beatles pop up in brief flashes, such as the Lennon-esque guitar leads in the bridge section of “Take Me As You Will”. The shuffling bounce heard in “You Still Belong” sounds like it could have had an assist from Tom Petty (and features some diverting guitar work from Sam Weber), as does “Brush It Off”, right up until the chorus, which displays a distinct early '80s skinny-tie pop flavor (think Squeeze or Joe Jackson).

The production on “New Low” utilizes a distinctly upbeat approach, infusing the album's burnished sound with falsetto vocals and a dash of late 70s dance floor feel, almost like a super relaxed Chic, before spinning off into a thick, guitar harmony-laden middle eight. On “If It's Autumn”, O'Brien taps into a deep, timeless wellspring of songwriting, its shuffling, start-stop rhythm section underpinning an exercise in classic folk-pop songwriting, while “The Old Days” sounds like it could have been slipped onto a 4-track-era Elliott Smith album.

Wonderment is an easy album to get lost in, and with its relatively breezy runtime, it's a listening experience that will no doubt have one reaching for the play button as soon as it's done. This is in no small part due to its remarkably streamlined and consistent sound, but also to O'Brien's increased focus on creating a cohesive, robust set of tunes, both musically and lyrically. “It was the first time that I really felt like I was consciously writing from my own experience in a truthful way,” he says, “and really talking about my lived experiences.” Of this new collection of songs, O'Brien says, “I hope it sounds like me. At this point in my musical life I'm not trying to emulate anything in terms of a sound or style, I'm just using my experiences to get as close to something authentic as possible.”

Today, His His, the recording project of Toronto-based artist Aidan Belo, shares another new track from the upcoming EP, Good Gold Cassette, set for release on November 15, 2024 via Victory Pool Records.

“My Friend Wants To Be A Freemason” is oddly enough, “a song about one of my childhood friends who had the idea of joining the freemasonry,” says Belo. “Prior to his fascination of becoming a freemason, I had very little knowledge of what it meant and what it is that they do. The idea of joining this secret society consumed my friend, and for a couple of months it was all that he’d talk about. The obsession eventually fizzled out and I never heard about it again. A few months later, I found out that one of the regulars who eats at my dad’s restaurant, where I work, is the officer for the Masonic lodge that is in town. I never introduced my friend to him, but I wrote a song about it.”

MORE ABOUT GOOD GOLD CASSETTE + HIS HIS
Good Gold Cassette is a record inspired by his dad, claims Belo. “One of the earliest memories I have with my dad is driving in his old Nissan pickup truck in the early 2000s going to get 1000 bales of discounted hay that a farmer that lived nearby was trying to clear his barn of to make room for the new harvested hay. I remember watching my dad pack 30 or so bales at a time bringing it from the farmer’s barn to ours. It took a long time, and it was blazing hot.

“A cassette of Breakfast in America by Supertramp (easily my dad’s favourite band after Pink Floyd) was what we listened to over and over again. I was fascinated at how this little piece of plastic produced these amazing sounds. At one point when my dad was moving hay while I was sitting in the car, I decided to press eject on the cassette player. I pulled the cassette out and looked at it closely. It made no sense to me, but I saw the little black coils of magnetic tape inside and on the bottom, it was exposed. I started to pull it out and before I knew it, all of the tape was on the floor of the Nissan pickup. When my dad came back inside of the truck, I could see the look in his eyes, and it was then that I first remember the feeling of guilt. He didn’t get mad, but I knew I did something wrong. The Supertramp cassette was replaced, and then eventually the cassette player in the truck was replaced by a newer truck with a cd player. To me, it never sounded the same as it did on that old, well-loved cassette that sat out on the dashboard cooking in the sun when it wasn’t in the console. That day sparked my love for and interest of cassettes.”

Good Gold Cassette was originally planned to be a digital and cassette-only release as every track on the EP began on a Tascam Portastudio 4-track cassette recorder. “The recording process began with 4 tracks starting on the cassette recorder (usually guitars and vocals) and were then bounced to my computer afterwards and built upon from there,” explains Belo. “They were sent again to tape during the mixing stage to help glue the tracks together. The EP is far from perfect, but that’s what I love about it. It’s a simple production of some tracks that I wrote in the early winter months of 2024. It was recorded with a couple of ribbon and dynamic mics, some old guitars, a (partially broken) 70s fender champ, a weathered drum kit, some bits and bobs I had laying around the space, lots of coffee, and a lot of magnetic tape and cassettes.”

CLOTHESLINE FROM HELL SHARES NEW SINGLE, “NICE ENOUGH WORDS”

Photo Credit : Lauren Armstrong // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

Today, Clothesline From Hell, the Toronto based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adam LaFramboise, is sharing a new single, “Nice Enough Words”. The track falls hot on the heels of his debut EP, Soon We’ll All Be Smoking, further showcasing LaFramboise’s abilities as a singer and songwriter, diverging from the breakbeat driven tracks that defined 2024 debut EP.

On “Nice Enough Words” he again collaborates with Matthew Tavares (Matty, BADBADNOTGOOD) on a swelling and emotional 2 minute and 30 second epic about how the most painful comments are often the ones intended to protect feelings.

"This is a song that came together with ease; written in one sitting, recorded in one session,” LaFramboise explains. 'Aimed at my head, your nice enough words', as in all those times when you get the sense someone is letting you down easy; sugarcoating the truth in order to protect your feelings. It's an awful feeling. It's when all you want is honesty, but someone else is deciding that you can't handle it in full. To me, this is the biggest flaw in a polite world, as the truth sometimes gets lost behind our manners."
