(“girl of my dreams” Video Still)

Sean Sroka, known as indie outfit Ten Kills the Pack, has become known for his confessional-style lyricism that explores the rough edges of the human condition. Stemming from his DIY days cutting his teeth in the music scene of Toronto, pausing his musical path for poetry, or playing in his slop punk band around the city, Sroka pens his experiences in a way that blends an ethos of punk with the kindness of folk.

Today, he shares the new video for recent single, “girl of my dreams”. "I think it's the cutest video I've ever made,” says Sroka. “I was happy to be able to make and direct something of my own with the same spirit of making the song, just going out and doing it for yourself. That's my puppy Fenne and I think she has a bright future in acting, but I'll let her decide when she gets older."

“girl of my dreams” is Ten Kills the Pack’s first independent single since parting ways with his record label in early 2024 and is leaning further back into a very familiar yet still disorientating independent musical landscape. To this, Sroka mentions “It does feel like I’ve never left this part of my musical lifestyle. And it’s beautiful to be able to create and release as you please. If the song feels like autumn, let’s have it out then.”

Reminiscent of an alt folk soundtrack to a movie of the 90’s, “girl of my dreams” is a leading example of Ten Kills the Packs guided artistic precision and spanning collaborators; working with artist Jay Som aka Melina Duterte (Boy Genius, Fenne Lily) mixing the track, and previous collaborator and drummer Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes. The new self produced release casts a light on the personal exercise and growth of becoming less precious and following your momentary artistic intuitions. “I sent what is now the chorus of this song as a little self deleting voice message jingle to my partner who was touring overseas at the time; trying to help count down the days we had away. From there it just kept turning in my head, so I turned off the tv and wrote it that night".

MORE ABOUT TEN KILLS THE PACK
With critical looks across an EP and two Albums, Sroka also moonlights as a songwriter with Nashville publishers and beloved Canadian acts like Aysanabee, with a song that earned Sroka’s first JUNO Award win in 2024 under the songwriting category. The nuances of Ten Kills the Pack’s efforts can also be explored in the production of Hannah Georgas’s critically acclaimed 2023 album I’d Be Lying if I Said I Didn’t Care.

Through a self released album, an EP produced with Dave Cerminara (Father John Misty), Ten Kills the Pack’s latest release Thank You for Trying, co-produced with Marcus Paquin (Weather Station, The National), acquired the descriptions of  "...poetic observations... poignant songcraft” from notable music leaders Under the Radar, and notes on how the projects “...poetic song writing ties the transportive tale that's simultaneously intimate and expansive” from EarMilk. With this, we now enter a new era where Sroka has established himself as a nuanced and free flowing artist that pushes the boundaries of what a singer songwriter is or can be.

Acclaimed Canadian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Rose Cousins recently announced her new album, Conditions of Love - Vol 1, set for release on March 14, 2025. Today, she shares the new single “Denouement”, which in artful shorthand the song asks the listener to fill in the blanks between paired words to create their own love story. With her signature economy of words, Rose eloquently captures that electric turbulence of new love and the uncomfortable slide into feelings that catch us off guard and have us pulling away, again.

"What are we looking for from love, anyway?” says Cousins. “We want to show and tell, to be seen, understood, and held. We want expansion, a new version of love, and at the same time, safety. We want to be loved for who we are, yet often, we don’t even know the answer to that question. But longing and belonging spur us to keep trying romantic love. We willingly dive in with someone brand new, a stranger actually, without ever knowing how the story will end."

MORE ABOUT CONDITIONS OF LOVE - VOL 1
On her new album, Rose holds her listeners’ hands as she guides them on a journey through the "conditions of love." Ever the emotional explorer, the Nova-Scotia-based artist seeks truth, in all its imperfection, in the depths of humans’ most complicated of emotions: love. The journey results in a striking clarity, and it’s the gift of that clarity that brings on surprising tears.

Rose shares, “Love feels great and makes us ridiculous. It's tiring and intense, joyful and devastating. Falling in love, being in love and staying in love are all such different things. Being human is emotionally complicated enough without attempting to relate to another who is just as complex, and in the most vulnerable of arenas: romance. Love is wondrous and absurd (and very hard). Humour helps.”

Co-produced with trusted friend and longtime bandmate Joshua Van Tassel, Conditions of Love - Vol. 1 sees Rose return to her first love, the piano. “Piano is where I feel the most connected. It’s the best partner in expressing the emotion I’m mining,” she shares. She first introduced the upcoming body of work with the gorgeous, piano-driven ballad “Forget Me Not,” followed by the slow-burning, nostalgic “Borrowed Light,” and the uplifting, “I Believe in Love (and it’s very hard),” which Rose has called the cornerstone of the upcoming album.

Rose Cousins’ songwriting plumbs the depths of the human condition. Her work has garnered her two JUNO Awards (2013’s We Have Made a Spark & 2021’s Bravado), two Canadian Folk Music Awards, eleven East Coast Music Awards and one Grammy Award nomination (2018’s Natural Conclusion), along with praise from the likes of the CBC, No Depression, LA Times, Associated Press, Billboard, Folk Alley, and NPR, who raved “Cousins’ disarmingly fluid vocal tone has the ability to convey the most internalized feelings without an ounce of fuss.” Over the years, she has shared stages with Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jann Arden, Kathleen Edwards, Joe Henry and Anais Mitchell, and her music has fittingly underscored scenes from notable TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Fire Country, Batwoman and Heartland.

Recently, producer/artist and multi-instrumentalist Maddie Jay announced the new album, I Can Change Your Mind, set for release on January 10, 2025. Following on previous singles “I’m The Leader”, “Name Your Price”, and “Chemical”, today Maddie Jay is sharing another new track, “11th Ave”.

“This whole song takes place in a hotel room in New York, on 11th avenue in Manhattan, where I spent weeks at a time rehearsing for a pop artist I was playing with, and coincided with me dating casually for the first time in my life,” says Maddie. “I’d always jumped very quickly to commitment in my romantic relationships, so this was a big shift and a liberating experience. I was travelling and touring a lot, and I felt very free and powerful not being tied down to any person or place. It’s the song on the album that makes me want to move and smile the most, and I used a ton of fun vintage drum machines and synthesizers on it.”

MORE ABOUT I CAN CHANGE YOUR MIND
“I wrote many of these songs over improvised tape loops that I recorded with my dear friends in hazy late night studio sessions,” Maddie explains. “I wanted to create a sonic bed that felt organic, nostalgic, immersive and emotionally cathartic. Working outside of solitude was a challenge for me, however I feel the end result resonates much stronger than something I would have created alone, which is probably a lesson in itself.”

“The style of songwriting I chose to pursue for this project came about while reflecting on my past projects,” Maddie continues. “I realized when listening to some of those old lyrics that I had unknowingly narrated the subtleties of an abusive relationship, described the feeling of intense codependence, and exposed my inner workings in some unflattering ways, all while thinking I was writing simple love songs.

“Each of these tracks was born in an effort to crystalize a feeling of overwhelm in my life over the last two years. They speak from within the headspace of addiction, loss of control, isolation, mania, codependence, and fear that I will never reach my full potential. By allowing myself to become an unreliable narrator, I felt able to understand the volatile internal negotiation between the person I am, and the person I aspire to be.”
