Today, Tariq announces the new EP, Scroll Before You Sleep, set for release on January 24, 2025 via Tiny Kingdom. The title, Scroll Before You Sleep, is a unifying tether for these three songs and their nod to digital isolation. “It’s less of a command or a suggestion, more of a warning,” says Tariq. “Keep scrolling, see what happens. Our phone addiction keeps us up at night. It’s impossible to relinquish our devices and when we finally do, they sit beside us on the nightstand, buzzing, alerting, demanding to be looked at and engaged with. When they finally shut up, they start doing their most unsettling activity of all, listening. They eavesdrop on our desires, hunger, fears, our tastes in music, fashion, and lovers. They make decisions about our lives and then at night, they sell it all back to us in ads and subscriptions and as we scroll, we pay. We pay and we rarely sleep.”

Following up recent EP single, “The Ballad Of You And Me”, Tariq shares “Architect’s Studio” which tells the story of a poet who’s down on their luck and sleeping in an architect’s studio. “Every morning they vacate the premises, sneaking out before the staff arrives to work,” explains Tariq. “Do they have a place to go, friends or anybody that cares about them? The track discusses the current epidemic of loneliness that pervades our current society.”

The chorus refrain ‘If I lost everything would you still love me?’ burrows into your ear, as Tariq laments the pain that the feeling of being alone can have on people. The track stands out with a memorable chorus, driving gritty bass and a wall of distorted guitars.

MORE ABOUT TARIQ
A stalwart of the Canadian indie scene for decades, this new EP marks the beginning of a new chapter and new sound for Tariq. Decidedly louder, and more immediate he is trading in soft folk harmonies for full throated wails. It also represents a new and collaborative approach to making music, working with musicians Robert Chursinoff (Drums), Peter Carruthers (Bass/Keys), and Adam Nanji (Guitar) who have all been members of some of the most prominent bands in Canada including Tegan and Sara, Said The Whale and Belle Game. “This project is a way to experiment with collaboration and also a heavier sound. I want to create something that resonates in its live form, in front of a big crowd at a festival, something that will be entertaining to watch and sound big and bold.”

Fresh off the back of her highly-praised September single “Life Of The Party”, Housewife (Brighid Fry) is back to her vibrant best once again with new euphoric offering “Divorce”.

Adopting a more introspective approach to the effervescent alt-pop sound she has become known for, “Divorce” sees Housewife release her most vulnerable and reflective, yet anthemic offering to date.

Speaking about the new release, she said, "’Divorce’ is a really personal one for me- I wrote it after experiencing really bad heartbreak that kind of blindsided me and completely uprooted me. It’s about not only mourning the person and the relationship you have with them, but also the life you were building together. It's about starting to rebuild and the struggle between needing to protect yourself, but also not wanting to be involved in something adversarial with someone who has hurt you. The process of making this song was completely different than any others of mine- it was written in about half an hour which is definitely the fastest I've ever managed. I then took my time to record it though, co-producing with my friend Hans Li over the course of about a month. We slowly recorded everything ourselves in his bedroom. It’s the first track I have co-produced in years which I’m really excited about."

MORE ABOUT HOUSEWIFE
Filled with curiosity and questions of identity, Toronto’s Brighid Fry (she/they) makes the sort of indie-leaning, exploratory music that it’s taken several years of early success and subsequent growth to reach. First breaking through in her teens as one half of Moscow Apartment, the duo swiftly won a Canadian Folk Music award for their self-titled debut EP before changing their name and then becoming a solo project in 2022. As Brighid hit her twenties and stepped front and centre, the material that she was writing became increasingly more self-aware and personal, too.

Still only 21, Brighid credits her liberal upbringing as helping to make this process of both artistic and self-discovery as seamless as possible. Having recently been diagnosed as autistic, she jokes that her neurodivergence was on display and understood from the first moments music entered her life as a child when, unlike most three-year-olds, she became obsessed with classical composers and begged her parents not just for a kid’s violin, but also a collection of busts of Bach, Beethoven and co. When the classical music fixation gave way to more contemporary tastes, she would join her family at the folk festivals they regularly attended, playing her first non-classical performance at a Greenpeace fundraiser.

As well as offering Brighid an early introduction to the community that music can provide and the climate activism that would go on to become a big part of her life (in 2021, she helped to set up the Canadian branch of Music Declares Emergency), her family also provided a completely accepting place to explore her wider identity. As a “third generation queer”, she’s felt confident and comfortable with her own bisexuality since the age of 12. “My parents are bisexual; my grandma’s a lesbian; I grew up going to Pride so I never had a teary coming out,” she notes. In the two years since Housewife’s previous EP You’ll Be Forgiven, meanwhile, Brighid has spent time understanding that she is non-binary. “It took longer to figure that bit out, but I’ve never struggled with my identity,” she says.

Housewife has toured extensively across the US and Canada and is currently finishing up a cross Canada run with Reuben and The Dark. Recent singles “Life Of The Party”, “Wasn’t You”, “I Lied”, “King Of Wands” and “Fuck Around Phase” have picked up support from outlets across the globe, from CBC in Canada to BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music in the UK.

Following a busy Spring of showcase festivals including SXSW, The New Colossus Festival and The Great Escape, Autumn saw Housewife tour the UK supporting Lauran Hibberd, playing their first European shows at Waves Vienna and Reeperbahn Festivals.

NEW SONG INSPIRED BY LOSING HIS VOICE AND THE POWER OF SILENCE, FEATURING FRENCH SINGER-SONGWRITER NOVEMBER ULTRA

Patrick Watson - the singer/songwriter, film composer and pianist based in Montreal, Canada - has released the music video for his newest song “Silencio,” featuring rising French singer-songwriter November Ultra. The song was inspired by an experience had by Watson - an Award-winning artist that has released several beloved albums of explorative cinematic pop over the past two decades - in which he couldn’t speak or sing for nearly three months. “Silencio” explores some of the impressions that came to him during this time: does he talk too much, the anxiety that comes with reliving a conversation, learning to be a better listener and the power of silence.

The video features richly textured film footage of Watson and November Ultra recording the song, which was completed in a painter’s studio in Paris (Studio Alterio of artist Ruben Alterio), overlooking Montmartre. Watson commented on the character of the studio, and how it helped to inspire the song with “an enormous window and so much old Parisian charm and ghosts.”

It was made by photographer Nick Helderman and videographer Sam Woy and edited by Watson and Woy.

Around the release of the song, Watson and November Ultra met to perform the song on the streets of Paris with Blogothèque for a live stream concert. They performed the song together on France Inter “Côté Club” as well, the French radio program where the two artists first met, when they were both booked as guests on the program.

“Silencio” will be part of a larger album project that Watson has been finishing, inspired by his missing voice, with more details to be announced soon.

‘I think you like me better since I lost my voice,’ Watson sings, over a mysterious and ethereal orchestration of arpeggiating guitars, softly touched drums, piano and burbling synths. He wrote the song with longtime collaborator, co-writer and bandmate Mishka Stein and November Ultra.  “Silencio” is sung in both Spanish and English, with November Ultra starting the song with her otherworldly and delicate vocals. Watson describes the process of making it as “magical.”  “Her wonderful wit and beautifully soft caring tone were very inspiring. The song just kind of wrote itself, AS THOUGH IT WAS A CONVERSATION WE HAD BEEN HAVING OUR WHOLE LIVES. It was lovely,” he says.
