Experimental electronic duo CHXMERAS are a transatlantic collaboration between UK/Canadian musician Paul Finlay from the North East of England and Vancouver-based nêhiyaw/Denesuline musician Jarrett Martineau from Treaty 6 territory. Together, they weave immersive soundscape with angular dub, experimental techno, mutating noise, and bit-crushed beats into a genre-blending, otherworldly experience. 

Out June 13, their new EP, Second Sight is about “standing face-to-face with the wild, furious, anything goes, free-for-all, freefall present moment that we’re all living through,” says CHXMERAS. “When we set out to make this record, we didn’t know where we would end up, but we knew that we wanted it to sound and feel like the chaos and anxieties that are swirling all around us.”

The EP’s first single, “Sublimation”, set that idea in motion. “When we were making the song, it felt like we were being guided by premonitions,” the duo explains. “Like the future rushing toward us. And the music came flying at the same speed. “Sublimation” channels the feeling of being hurtled inevitably through space toward an unknown destination and unknowable outcomes. It’s driving, overwhelming, and always on the edge of breaking down. But it’s also about trying to capture that frenetic energy and take its power back before everything cascades fully out of control.”

CHXMERAS released their debut album, Terminal City, in 2024 on Virtua94 Records. Hailed by RANGE Magazine as “a multilayered cinematic masterpiece", the album charts a sonic passage through the echoes and ruins of late-stage capitalism, environmental degradation, and urban decay. Using modular synths, drum machines, live efx, field recordings, film samples and live improvisation, CHXMERAS take listeners into a hallucinatory landscape where fractal paths, lost futures, and the disorienting present collide.

MOONSHINE, the JUNO Award nominated collective is back with two fresh singles, “La Haine” and “Slow it Down”, in collaboration with NegoO, Yend, and UNIIQU3. 

The two singles, very different from each other, offer a first taste of the album’s cross genre, cross continental approach. Afro-futuristic, bass heavy, electro-funk sounds reverberate in very different ways throughout each composition. Upstaging polyrhythms created by the voices of Yend and NegoO, swirling percussive patterns and heavy base, make “La Haine” a futuristic and spacey afrobeat, reminiscent of ZAÏRE SPACE PROGRAM ACT II - the Moonshine short-film exploring the connection between art and science in modern-day Africa set to be released alongside the mixtape.

Yend, the Strasbourg-based multi-disciplinary artist and winner of the Buzz Booster competition, explores the rich textures of her vocal delivery, weaving vibrant, unique sounds into her compositions. NegoO, the Portuguese producer and DJ, on the other hand, brings his signature touch to "La Haine" infusing it with Batida – the electronic dance music associated with the afrodiasporic DJs of Lisbon. Drawing inspiration from his own upbringing in the suburbs that have given rise to some of the genre's most influential artists, NegoO delivers a fresh and dynamic take on the sound.

“Slow it Down” is ironically anything but slow. The track features UNIIQU3, the electrifying New Jersey DJ, rapper, and producer known for shaping and globalizing the Jersey Club movement. From her early career as a sought-after vocalist in the club scene to remixing iconic tracks like Crystal Waters’ "100% Pure Love," UNIIQU3’s high-energy, hybrid dance sound has always been about movement. On “Slow it Down”, UNIIQU3 delivers her trademark club-driven intensity, blending pulsating beats with a genre-defying sonic palette to craft an irresistible dancefloor anthem.

Nominated for the 2022 JUNO Award for Global Music Album of the Year, Moonshine celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2024, marking a decade of pushing musical boundaries. Known for their genre-blending sound, they fuse house music, Batida, Rumba, Singeli, Amapiano, Hip-Hop, and R&B—merging ancestral rhythms with futuristic textures. Their work features collaborations with artists such as DJ Lag, Pierre Kwenders, Uniiqu3, Branko, Vanyfox, Black Rave Culture, and more.

The Deep Dark Woods return with their first new music since Broadside Ballads Vol. III and their first original song since 2021's “Changing Faces”. Shadowy and inviting, “Ruby”, the first track off an upcoming yet-to-be-announced late 2025 record, sounds like the band playing in a darkened, fireplace-lit wood cabin in the middle of the night, and you're right in there with them in a well-worn armchair. The voice of founding member Ryan Boldt sits at the forefront of the band, and it doesn’t take long to reveal that he is a master of subtlety and shading. 

“I wrote it during a strange and difficult time, after the sudden loss of my dear friend and tour manager, Kiko, and just before my daughter was born,” says Boldt. “It was a mix of heartbreak and anticipation that I will never forget.”

MORE ABOUT THE DEEP DARK WOODS
One might be tempted to think of the Deep Dark Woods as a band steeped in capital-T tradition, and that may be true, but now nearly two decades into their life as one of Canada’s finest folk-roots ensembles, that tradition is one of their own invention. The voice of founding member Ryan Boldt sits at the forefront of the band, and it doesn’t take long to reveal that he is a master of subtlety and shading.

Boldt, a relentless lifelong listener of music, says “It’s all I do. When I’m not playing music, I’m listening to it, trying to find songs that make me feel an aching pain in my chest.” Accordingly, his singing is full of highly emotive nuance and an elegant, relaxed precision that makes it seem downright effortless, a perfect vehicle for the band’s particular brand of updated folk music. Fellow travelers like keyboard whiz Geoff Hilhorst, veteran drummer Mike Silverman, and Evan Cheadle round out the Deep Dark Woods unit, and they are often assisted by like-minded collaborators such as singer-songwriter Ellen Froese, Erik Nielsen, Leon Power, and the acclaimed duo Kacy & Clayton. This crew creates a powerful combination and has amassed a pile of celebrated albums, EPs, and a host of nominations from music awards outfits from across the country. 

Originally from Saskatchewan and now based in Southern Ontario, The Deep Dark Woods take up a deep tradition of forlorn storytelling, drawing lines from Celtic folksongs to country blues. Lush and devastating, Boldt’s gothic surrealism is stark in detail and full of emotion, a murder balladeer for our time.
