Ada Lea—the moniker of Montreal-based musician Alexandra Levy— releases “bob dylan's 115th haircut,” the final preview from her new album, when i paint my masterpiece, out Friday via Next Door Records. Following the “Subtly cinematic, deftly performed and delicately written” (Wonderland) “midnight magic,” “bob dylan's 115th haircut” is a standout track tied to the album title. when i paint my masterpiece playfully references a lesser-known Bob Dylan song that he says describes, “Something that is so supreme and first-rate that you could never come back down from the mountain.” Ada Lea’s invocation of the icon is a meditation on this metaphor of the mountain, and how its potential lives within a brushstroke, a take, a moment of surprise.

Commenting on the track, Levy says: “Sometimes I get into these moods where I feel like there will always be a gap between what I want to say, and what I actually end up writing. I start comparing myself. The mood that evening was comparing myself to Bob Dylan. And why not? In order to pick myself up off the floor after saying things like ‘I could never write a song like Bob Dylan,’ which of course, is true, I had to reverse the thought ‘could he write one like me?’ Whether or not that was a good thing, it was something.” On the track, she sings, ‘Bob Dylan couldn’t have written this song/ Not even if he wanted to, not even just for fun.’

when i paint my masterpiece is an epic, 16-track opus. It’s a kaleidoscopic exploration of the transformations art can bring: the vision of an uncompromising artist dancing bravely and freely between registers and across mediums. The album marks a reset—a quiet revolution. After years of relentless international touring, Levy felt an urgent need for community and renewal. Gruelling road schedules with very little support left her wondering: who am I really doing all this for? The system was uncaring and broken, and so she envisioned a new healthy and healing mode of musical genesis. Levy went back to school to study painting and poetry, got a job, and began teaching.

The shapely, intuitive songs that comprise Ada Lea's third album are surprising, imagistic, tactile. They stand before us and we feel their brushstrokes. By the end of these sixteen songs, it’s clear: when i paint my masterpiece isn’t chasing perfection, it’s comfortable in the magic of being. These songs are alive with poetic specificity and a wide-open heart—deeply felt, often strange, and always reaching. There’s an optimistic and plainspoken wisdom in the lyrics, building on Ada Lea’s singular songwriting style of surprising harmonic and melodic turns—now with a newly rich, organic sound that rewards slow listening. The masterpiece, not a product, is the process.

Levy will embark on an extensive North American Tour in September following a string of dates in the UK. A full list of dates is below and tickets will be available here

“Throughout the record, Friday oscillates between extremes, at times soft and coy, at others harsh and direct, but she's always loved playing around with duality. On the album's first single, 1/17, Friday is in a trance, her voice gentle and melodic as she sings an ode to her lover. On Lipsync, she's boldly confident, spitting matter-of-factly over ricocheting beats.” CBC Music

The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life, Debby Friday’s luminous and expansive new album, and the follow-up to GOOD LUCK, her Polaris Music Prize winning, full-length debut, is out today worldwide from Sub Pop and in Canada from Royal Mountain Records. The album features the highlights “Bet On Me”, “Lipsync”, “All I Wanna Do Is Party”, “1/17”, and today’s offering, the official video for the shoegaze dancehall track “Alberta”.

Friday codirected the somber and tearful “Alberta” visual with returning collaborator Kevan Funk. She says of the song, and the visual’s place in The Starrr Of The Queen Of Life universe, “Alberta encapsulates so much of what I’ve learned about love, grief,  forgiveness and what it means to be together with others. I see your heart and I know that I and Thou are the same. In a way, it is the ultimate ethos of the album. I borrowed a little bit from David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive for the video. There’s this hypnotizing transmission of a deep and shared sadness that happens during the Club Silencio scene that really shook me the first time I saw it.”

PRAISE FOR DEBBY FRIDAY

“It's a sweaty, clubby effort that digs just deep enough into various underground styles (hello Detroit ghettotech phenoms HiTech) to lend it some authentic grit, and a production glow-up that matches FRIDAY's confidence better than anything on her debut.” 8/10, Exclaim!

“The result is a kinetic headrush of genre-blurring electro-pop, one that moves through genres at a breakneck speed.” Toronto Star

"The Toronto-based vocalist and producer Debby Friday won the Polaris Music Prize for her sharp 2023 debut album, Good Luck. She returns with the euphoric electro-pop single ‘1/17,’ a dance-floor confessional that shows off yet another side of her multifaceted talent. “I swear you’re a sign,” Friday sings in an airy atmosphere punctured by percolating synths. The track builds layer atop gauzy layer until it explodes in a burst of club-ready catharsis." [‘1/17”] The New York Times

"The song brings back some of that old PC Music feeling. It’s a euphoric, unapologetically cheesy trance-pop confection. As synth-bloops whirl all around her, Friday chants, “Poetry and nude selfies, love the way that you know me.” It feels like it’s heading toward a climactic beat-drop…the drums do eventually arrive, and that moment is awesome. Friday co-directed the bare-bones ‘1/17’ video with Kevan Funk, and it makes a great case for her as a performer."  [‘1/17”] STEREOGUM

“The Starrr… has clearly been born of sweaty city nightclubs and subsequent comedowns, tying together dancefloor escapism and the shock of hurtling back to the real world.” ★★★★ DIY

“Last time we heard a single from Debby Friday, the Toronto artist was commanding girls to the dance floor on a minimal club track co-produced by Detroit rascals HiTech. She’s in a totally different headspace on the hyperpop ballad ‘1/17,’ singing about love and sensuality over bubbling synths which eventually give way to a euphoric trance finale.”  [“1/17”] THE FACE

“It’s a banger” [“All I Wanna Do Is Party”] BROOKLYN VEGAN

“...fully three-dimensional in intent and tone, it finds Debby Friday severing herself from the past. Carnal and exultant…”  [“All I Wanna Do Is Party”]  CLASH

"Brooklyn drag queens and music directors of upcoming all-female action films: There’s a new irresistibly catchy, dark-pop song for your consideration." [“Lipsync”] NYLON

"The song is a bubbling electro-rap cut with half-spoken words from the Toronto-based songwriter, going full rave banger during the chorus. It almost makes me—who never wants to dance—wanna dance."   [“Lipsync”] FLOOD

“hazy yet kinetic… the chanted vocals are a particularly delightful touch” [“Bet On Me”] Our Culture

“...riotous with self-belief” [“Bet On Me”] “The Playlist,” The Guardian

BABYGIRL UNVEIL NEW SINGLE, “YOU DON’T NEED A REASON TO CALL”

TORONTO INDIE POP DUO SHARE ANOTHER GLIMPSE OF NEW MUSIC

Today, Babygirl, the Toronto and Los Angeles-based duo of Kiki Frances and Cameron Bright, are sharing another new single, “You Don’t Need A Reason To Call”. A wistful dedication to unconditional companionship, with Frances’s sweet vocals underscored by lightly frayed guitar, “You Don’t Need A Reason To Call” is a song that “honours the hours-long phone call, and the person that you can call at any time for any reason, even if there’s no reason at all,” says the band. “There’s a certain rare intimacy between people that reach out to one another without cause, just to pass the time together. How nice it is that we can keep each other company even when we aren’t in the same room or city or country - it still feels like something to marvel at.”

Babygirl have a penchant for vivid imagery in their singular music, a wistful take on bittersweet pop rock that heedlessly transports into the soundtrack of a teen drama from the early aughts. Following the recent singles "Take Me Back" and "After You", Babygirl further enlivens their effervescent definition of pop music with "You Don't Need A Reason To Call".

MORE ABOUT BABYGIRL
Babygirl met while enrolled in a jazz program at Toronto’s Humber College and bonded over a shared love of Katy Perry, The Beach Boys, and the art of a good pop song. They were kindred pop spirits, as though fated to be a songwriting team. A pair of pop music philosophers, the two connected over dissecting the math of Max Martin and Swedish-penned Top 40 hits. “It was nice to find someone else there that was super passionate about pop music and took it seriously in the same way,” they say.

Celebrated for their three EPs, Be Still My Heart (2023), Losers Weepers (2021) and Lovers Fevers (2018) – which have amassed over 50 million streams and earned glowing praise from platforms like Noisey, Rolling Stone, PAPER, and NYLON, Babygirl now stand poised with their best music to date.

PAST PRAISE FOR BABYGIRL

“The chorus soars out from the shadows of nostalgia of melancholic recollections of moments with someone who redefined what love can be and into the bright burst of luminosity that saturates the single's accompanying artwork, with open chords and twinkling synths swirling like dust in a sunbeam: "Caught me in your headlights, I forgot to move." Exclaim! on "After You"

“While their nostalgic sound recalls the warm malaise of ’90s alternative rock, the band’s lyrics strike a contemporary chord, blending sad, solitary images with moments of crystalline clarity and emotional weight.” CONSEQUENCE

"Bandmates Kiki Frances and Cameron Bright layer on the melancholic yearning, jangling guitars, and haze ‘90s vibes, hitting on a deft balance of earnest pop melody and indie rock malaise.” Under The Radar
