Ellen Froese’s second single of 2025, “Wondering When?”, continues to sum up where she is at right now as the Saskatoon songwriter wonders when or if there will be a time when anxieties don’t dominate her thoughts.

“I get caught up in spirals,” Froese explains. “Still, I'm trying to be thankful for the little moments of peace and joy, 'zoom out' a bit, and let go of waiting. I put a melody to some journaling I was doing.”

“It’s been a weird year - lots of life changes, maybe some ego-death,” Froese previously shared alongside "Solitary Song”. Between an ADHD diagnosis and cutting back on some vices, her perspective - as a musician, a lover, a human being, has changed.

Froese had been clinging to the sense that she should be making art in a certain way, and she was never quite doing it right—gritting her teeth and writing daily morning pages, only to skip one day and think, “fuck, I guess I’m not creative.” But at this point in Froese’s career—4 full-length albums and many international tours deep—Froese is just trying to reclaim the free-flying feeling of writing “playful songs” as a 15-year-old on her family’s cattle farm.

MORE ABOUT ELLEN FROESE
Froese’s honeyed voice and wry, down-to-earth lyricism can be heard throughout her last album, For Each Flower Growing, produced with the Sheepdogs’ Sam Corbett. Commingling the sounds of past and present—say, Loretta Lynn meets Adrienne Lenker, with a dollop of good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll—it feels like Froese is looking you in the eyes as she sings of trying to find “a resolution between my heart and all the others that I had to leave behind.” With all the changes in her life, Froese reckons with all the wonderful feelings—and people—of the past, and the bitter-sweet freedom of moving on.

Though so much has changed in Froese’s life, one fundamental truth remains: she’s deftly penning head-turning songs that invite the listener to let go of the things that are getting them down. It’s flirting with self-acceptance while indulging in a hearty spoonful of self-deprecation; it’s trying to be “happy in the confidence of a solitary song”; it’s getting your friends on board for some cheeky country-folk tunes. And nobody does those quite like Ellen Froese.

Seasoned rocker Terra Lightfoot has a well-earned reputation as a tireless live performer, with a tour history mapped across the globe and awards testifying to every mile logged along the way. To date, Lightfoot's marathon tours have touched down in eight countries across four continents. She also conceived, created, curated, produced and co-headlined The Longest Road Show, an all-female touring revue.

Most fans would reasonably assume that the singer-songwriter’s natural element is in the spotlight. But even accomplished touring artists like Lightfoot feel the insistent tug of home. That place, which for Lightfoot is a scenic hideaway in Ontario’s Haliburton Highlands, is captured in warm detail on the artist’s intimate new album, Home Front out October 17 via Midnight Choir / Sonic Unyon. In stark contrast to the anthemic alt-pop riffs of 2017’s New Mistakes and 2023’s Healing Power (each of which earned the artist JUNO Award nominations and Polaris Music Prize long list nods), this is an unplugged session in more ways than one.

Home Front was recorded in the living room, on the back porch, in the relaxing moments after dinner or the late evening, when the crickets and peepers were singing their loudest,” says Lightfoot. “This house is a special place. It sits all by itself between woods and streams that go on for acres and acres and a beautiful wetland teeming with wildlife. I find myself living more comfortably in my own bones than ever before when I’m here. There is a deep quiet here, in the house that backs onto the beaver marsh. Blue herons fly, and moose and bears walk the forest path out back. It is a place where I can’t help but be more connected to the natural world. Being so engrossed in the world of loud rock ’n’ roll guitar doesn’t leave a lot of space for field recording or softly strummed nylon strings. Home Front is the place where I can share all those softer and sweeter moments.”

Today, Lightfoot shares Home Front's lead single, a countrified cover of Treble Charger’s enduring indie rock staple “RedFeat. Bill Priddle. “I’ve loved this song since I was a kid,” Lightfoot says of the ‘90s radio staple. “I became friends with (Treble Charger vocalist-guitarist and “Red” songwriter) Bill Priddle when we were both playing in the band Don Vail. We’ve stayed in touch. Bill came out to our show in Sault Ste Marie last summer. I had the idea to cover this song with him then, and after we sang it together at the festival we were playing, it made so much sense to cut this one for this record.”

“Welcoming Vancouver-based singer Michaela Slinger onto the track for an old-fashioned duet, the two sing about heartbreak and reconciliation while pushing through the toughest of times and coming out strong on the other end.The two soft-spoken vocalists prove to be a great match for each other, blending their tones together as they tentatively venture requests to start taking the slow steps to fully opening back up emotionally.” RANGE on “Wide Open”

“Wide Open" has a classic country feel reinforced by haunting pedal steel and the harmony singing of Vancouver’s Michaela Slinger, who co-wrote the tune with Lam in Nashville. Lyrically it digs deep, probing a challenging time in a relationship and the warm and poignant vocals of Lam deliver the message skillfully.” Billboard on “Wide Open”

"Braden Lam's inviting voice rings out over gentle guitar and vibraphone on ‘Beautiful Neighbourhoods’, a timeless single that vibrates with warmth and longing." - CBC MUSIC

"Crafts an expansive but intimate sonic world for us to lose ourselves in" - Earmilk

"Calling to mind the happiest takes by Ben Howard or Tim Baker" - The Coast Halifax

“Sore” Video Still

Today, Braden Lam releases the stunning clip from Monument Valley for "Sore", now completing a music video for every song from his debut album, The Cloudmaker’s Cry.

"Sore came pouring out in one sitting, only days before the final production session for this record, shares Lam. “ I wrote it to the unborn child my wife and I will never have in the wake of health issues. Having kids wasn't something we were keen on doing from the start, but it's a door closing nonetheless that still stings. The song delicately builds until it boils over with this overwhelming grief. We ran really long cables from the studio upstairs, down to the actual sanctuary space of the church we were working in to get these massive sounding vocals and instruments at the very end.”

MORE ABOUT THE CLOUDMAKER’S CRY
The Cloudmaker’s Cry is Lam’s debut full-length album, and he means album in the classic sense: 10 considered and thoughtful folk songs, meticulously arranged and painstakingly sequenced, meant to be played on a turntable in a single sitting, whiskey optional. Though barely 27, he has lived the life of a much older man—with years of touring, entrepreneurship, and marriage already accounted for—and this collection of songs reflects lessons learned earlier than most, about time and love and the world.

Produced in Toronto by Eli Browning, it was a new approach for Lam, who made his previous three EPs with a host of producers across Atlantic Canada. The pair’s touchstones as they worked through a city springtime in a converted church studio were George Harrison, Neil Young, and other sounds from the 1960s and 70s: music that is lyric-forward and performed with folk instrumentation in analogue tones, resulting in a timeless singer-songwriter record.

This vibe carries through the entire package, from the tintype photographs of Lam to the images wrought in 35mm in the liner notes, to his charming video collaborations with Griffin O’Toole that combine nostalgia, surrealism, and camp into a distinct style of film. Each particular piece fits perfectly into the primary vision, creating something grand in its authenticity and comforting in its warmth.

The album features singles, “Beautiful Neighbourhoods”, which climbed to #7 on the CBC Music Top 20, “Highway Jesus”, “Hurricane Season”, and “Wide Open”, a duet with Vancouver’s Michaela Slinger. Lam was also named as one of 8 semi-finalists in SiriusXM’s 2025 ‘Top of the Country’
