Following the release of his 2022 debut EP Pass Me By, Niall Mutter decamped to a cabin in rural Quebec where he set up a home studio on the lake. With the help of his trusty TASCAM 8-track cassette recorder and a laid-back no force environment, he developed a bold new sound shaped by a deep attention to his surroundings which Mutter describes as “a place of routine and quiet isolation, where nature felt both comforting and haunting.”

The result is the debut album from Mutter, Silver, a collection of songs “mostly written and recorded over two months while at the cabin”, says Mutter. “I didn’t set out to make a record—I was in a bit of a creative rut, and felt the need to get away from the city without interruption. These songs came out of that stillness. Out of silence. Out of letting go of polish and pressure, and tuning into the strange, fragile shimmer of what was beneath the surface. The album moves through themes of memory, grief, desire, and change—often sitting in the in-between spaces where clarity and confusion overlap. The title SILVER felt right because it holds all of that: it’s reflective, a little haunted—beautiful but bruised. Silver is what’s left after the shine wears off—tarnishable, tender, but still strong.”

Having already shared the new single “Black Water”, today Mutter returns with “Beau Bassin”, the first song he wrote after moving to the cabin. “I hadn’t been writing much at all in Montreal, but once I settled in, this one came out pretty quickly — playful, a little rough around the edges, almost like a Boy Scout anthem for dropping everything and disappearing for a while,” explain Mutter. “Think Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson. It came from that urge to leave the city, to get away from all the noise. Looking back, it feels like the first spark — the beginning of what would eventually become Silver.”

Today, singer-songwriter, film composer and pianist Patrick Watson has released “House on Fire”, a new collaboration with beloved singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright. Written by Watson during a period where he lost his ability to sing – and by Wainwright, “House On Fire” features his voice effortlessly intertwined with Wainwright’s in a moving duet : ‘I’ll be wrong / you’ll be right / I don’t mind / I just want to make it right’. Backed by a rousing string arrangement, the duo’s soaring interlocked harmonies highlight the emotional tension of the track, with Wainwright’s powerful multi-octave voice perfectly contrasting Watson’s sensitive tenor.

MORE ABOUT UH OH
The eleven new original songs on Uh Oh find Watson meditating on the idea of life being a series of “uh ohs”: a little phrase uttered in response to everything from childhood accidents to our most overwhelming anxieties. For Watson, it came to mind when faced with the biggest “uh oh” that a singer could endure when he lost his voice. Unsure if or when he would be able to sing again, his new album took a new shape, a collection of collaborations with friends and strangers; artists that he wanted to hear sing. Uh Oh represents a vision that Watson has chased for his entire life, the culmination of 20 years of musical exploration and lived experience that enabled him to translate the films in his mind to the sounds and words swirling in your ears.

Most of the songs on Uh Oh see Watson and his long-time bandmates, collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Mishka Stein, Olivier Fairfield, and co-vocalist Ariel Engle (La Force) joined by a guest singer. The featured vocalists range from the iconic voices he’s idolized for years – Martha Wainwright – to ones he discovered through Instagram scrolling like Solann and local Quebec favorite Klô Pelgag, and include international phenoms MARO, Hohnen Ford, November Ultra, JUNO Award winner Charlotte Cardin, Félix award winner Anachnid, and a friend he met when she worked the counter at this local coffee shop, Charlotte Oleena. “Every singer has these different magical powers on this record, and each song kind of represents that,” Watson says.

Watson has previously shared four songs from Uh Oh; The Wandering with Portuguese artist MARO, Silenciowith French artist November Ultra, “Gordon in the Willows with fellow Montrealer Charlotte Cardin, and Peter and the Wolf which accompanied the album announcement on June 4. “Silencio” was the first preview of this new project, with Watson first revealing the loss of his voice, and among other impressions, finding the power of silence. It was recorded at Studio Rubin Alterio, an old artist’s loft in Paris. “Gordon in the Willows” was written and recorded by Watson and Cardin in a small lakeside village in Quebec, and around the song’s release last winter, they performed it during a surprise appearance on the top of Montreal’s Mont Royal. Inspired by the ghosts of New Orleans, “Peter and the Wolf” was accompanied by a pulse-pounding new video directed by Patrick Watson and SAM WOY and shot in the Quebec countryside.

Austra, the pop project of vocalist and composer Katie Stelmanis, returns today with news of her new album Chin Up Buttercup, due out November 14, 2025 on Pink Fizz (Canada) and Domino (Worldwide).

Stelmanis, a classically trained musician and opera devotee with four previous albums and a Canadian Screen Award under her belt, has been singing dramatic arias about tragedy for years. Her secret? She didn’t really know what that devastation felt like. She only experienced it off stage in early 2020 when her long-term partner dropped a bombshell. “I was completely blindsided … the person I loved woke up one day, told me she wasn’t happy, and I basically never saw her again,” Stelmanis says. She confesses to feeling very at odds with the world, like nothing made sense. The album’s name is a reference to the societal pressure to just paste on a smile and keep going. Stelmanis and co-producer Kieran Adams (Diana, The Weather Station) took inspiration from the Eurodance sound of Madonna’s landmark 1998 album Ray of Light, produced by William Orbit, and emerged with a mix of hypnotic dance floor anthems and elegant melodies to soothe your broken heart.

Stelmanis unleashed her pain over the breakup into poetic fragments in a cathartic Google document that eventually became the source for the album’s powerful lyrics. One such example is captured vividly in the album’s first riveting single “Math Equation”: ‘You said I needed my own friends / So I found them / Then you fucked them’. There is an unmistakable type of sapphic chaos threaded through every song, and “Math Equation” is equal parts catchy clapback and bittersweet plea for reconnection. “Math Equation” comes today via a video directed by Trevor Blumas.

MORE ABOUT AUSTRA + CHIN UP BUTTERCUP
“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up.” - Louise Erdrich

‘I’m so chaotic in love,’ sings Katie Austra Stelmanis on “Amnesia”, the cinematic opening track of Chin Up Buttercup, the fifth album by her alter ego and longtime pop project Austra. You know Austra’s astonishing voice – singular and operatic, it betrays a fearlessness and sophistication. She’s the woman you’d be afraid to approach in a bar. Her voice draws you like a siren to the dance floor as the beats build toward the hypnotic chorus of “my life is not the same without you in my arms.” Listen closely and you’ll hear a vulnerability that sets this album apart from her earlier work. This is a grief album you can dance to.

Mournful lyrics about the opprobrium of heartache join euphoric, live-for-today euro-dance inspired synth melodies, a juxtaposition that says what we all know: contrasting emotions like anxiety and excitement, pleasure and pain, and jealousy and attraction can feel indistinguishable in your body. Who Stelmanis might be off stage – a composer, a studious introvert, suffering from an obsession with a romantic betrayal – is set free by embodying the protagonist of this invigorating album-length journey. She’s a force, demonic, an emotionally-driven chaos monster, and she’s going to lead you to surrender.

Heartbreak is both an ordinary humiliation and uniquely devastating. Stelmanis describes Chin Up Buttercup as a narrative about “the alienating feeling of being heartbroken in a world that’s awkward and inconvenienced by your pain.” Most of us act as though romantic grief is more of an embarrassment than a universal wound. Stelmanis decided to lean into the character of the psycho creep, consumed by longing instead of aspiring toward detachment. The result of embracing this dual personality is an album that coolly moves through the madness and eschews traditional healing arcs that bend toward self-improvement. By the final track we love this anti-hero; she is shining a light on our universal shame, making us laugh at our own abject desperation. - Zoe Whittall
