Today, trailblazing electronic pop duo Purity Ring released a lush, rock-tinged new single, “imanocean”. In "imanocean” Purity Ring takes a left turn into a new reverie where otherworldly anime scores and 90s rock effortlessly co-exist. Live drums, guitars, and holographic choirs collide in a track that resembles REM scoring Studio Ghibli. MJ relates a surreal and unpleasant conversation: ‘wake up wake up, you’ve been talking now for hours’. As she escapes into the chorus with carefree abandon, we feel the epiphany of seeing things as they are for the first time: ‘I wanna feel this for the rest of my life, I am an ocean where the tears fall from the sky…’ a place brimming with melancholy and hope.

“We had a really nice time playing songs on the beach and getting washed away. This song is a sweet current of fog drifting over the ocean, a wave away from all the things we’ve made, yet still thoroughly us. There is a place in us we wanted this song to fill and it took a few iterations before it fell to this one, but the satisfaction we get from it is reminiscent of the hazy memory of songs from our past. Off all the places we’ve seen the sun set, of all the times we felt ourselves getting carried away in the rush. A foggy dream of emotion that surrounds us in a gentle chaos of moving water, the euphoria and contentment of knowing we are the same thing. I’m just a body, holding water, making heat,” says MJ on the song.

Long known for their fusion of body horror imagery and ethereal electronics, the duo now shift their focus from the physical to the fantastical, crafting a concept album that serves as the soundtrack to an imagined RPG. Inspired by games like Nier Automata and Final Fantasy X, the record tells the story of two hapless characters — embodiments of mj and Corin — on a journey to build a kinder world amid the ruins of a broken one. But this is no escapist fantasy: it is the first step of forbidden dreaming, of imagining a place where the vulnerable are heeded, where grief is spoken aloud and held collectively, where family is a verb rather than a noun, where hope and home can bloom together.

Earlier this month, Purity Ring joined forces with the iconic Pabllo Vittar and Maffalda for place of my own (maffalda remix),” a reimagining of their recently released trance anthem place of my own.” Preceding “place of my own” as the first taste of the upcoming album was many lives &part ii, an adventurous double single that pushed into undiscovered sonic terrain for the band.

Purity Ring’s upcoming tour will deliver their immersive concert experience to stages across North America. Kicking off October 13 in Ventura, CA, the tour will stop in major markets including San Francisco, Chicago, New York City, and more before concluding in Los Angeles on November 12. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased via Seated HERE

Purity Ring released their first three albums on the legendary label 4AD, beginning with Shrines, which earned Pitchfork’s Best New Music honors and was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. Their breakout track “Fineshrine” is certified gold in the US, and “Grandloves” was sampled by Playboi Carti on his Die Lit track “Fell In Love”. In recent years, they remixed “Knife Prty” as the lead single for the 20th anniversary reissue of Deftones’ classic album White Pony and collaborated with industrial pop duo Black Dresses on the track “Shines”

Since emerging in the early 2010s, Corin and mj have made a lasting impact on the electronic pop landscape, building a world all their own with immersive self-produced albums and designing groundbreaking visual live show experiences. Their next era of self-released music promises to step fully into a vision they’ve been circling for years - one that feels vast, unrestrained, and true to who they’ve become.

OURI SHARES NEW SINGLE, “BEHAVE !”, FEAT. CHARLOTTE DAY WILSON

Photo Credit : Maiko Rodrig // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

From her classical beginnings in harp, cello, and piano to her immersion in Montreal’s underground electronic scene, Ouri has shaped a sound that moves with finesse, poise, and power. Her music carries the intimacy of something hand-carved, yet unfolds with the confidence of an artist unafraid to experiment.

Ouri describes her process as creating through “secret neural pathways,” chasing “the sudden sensorial intensity of that state”. She speaks of textures that are “raw/sharp but soft,” tracing themes of resistance, belonging, and desire. On tour with Charlotte Day Wilson, the two developed an unspoken musical language—“two women freely jumping from one idea to the next”—a trust that would later anchor their collaboration, the new single, “Behave !”

"In the middle of last year, after a few months of touring together, I played Charlotte a couple demos I had been working on,” says Ouri. “I had been spending more time creating loops of voice and harp that I kept raw, unfiltered, sharpening the contours of my presence. The song starts to shape up instinctually, like a kid that is being ordered to stay in one place but the young mind starts to wander and soon enough, the body follows. We ended up toying with this classic R’nB feel but kept it confrontational in the approach, leaning towards this hyperreal sense that surrounds my world."

PRAISE FOR OURI

“Montreal singer and composer Ouri ventures out of the dreamy electronic music she is known for to create a breathtaking string-driven piece that's equal parts Björk, Phillip Glass, and 90s R&B.” - FADER

“On ‘blueprints of us’ and ‘tame me,’ she reveals a more raw, perhaps somehow even more vulnerable voice that is rooted in electronic melodies that are both minimalist, experimental, ethereal, and at times, strange.” - BILLBOARD

“Montreal-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Ouri consistently churns out magnetizing work.” - FLOOD

"expertly guides listeners through a narrative of anticipation, climax and release" - Office Magazine

"equal parts comforting and transcendent" - V Magazine

“Ambient pop and rich, hot-blooded techno interrogate the way experiences of emigration and falling in love reshape identity over time.” - PITCHFORK

“She dials in swooping sounds, echoey vocal syllables, a glitchy beat, tentative chords; the dance beat solidifies, falls away and reappears, briefly locking into syncopation with wordless vocal syncopations before evaporating.” - NEW YORK TIMES

Recently, The Deep Dark Woods announced their upcoming album, The Circle Remains, and today they’re sharing another new track from the album. “Circle Remains Unbroken” is “a spiritual song rooted in ‘Will the Circle Be Unbroken?’,” says frontman Ryan Boldt. “It’s a refusal to be influenced by the ridiculous fads that are being blasted into our fragile brains and the feeling that our nihilistic way of living is destroying us.”

MORE ABOUT THE CIRCLE REMAINS
The Circle Remains is an exercise in understatement, showcasing a band who clearly knows what they're doing, and simply keeps getting better at doing it, paradoxically making it seem more and more effortless with each release. These nine gorgeous, mesmerizing tracks combine sturdy, heartfelt songwriting with sparkles of tiny, luminescent detail tucked into every corner of this album's sonic landscape. Shadowy and inviting, The Circle Remains sounds like the band playing in a darkened, fireplace-lit wood cabin in the middle of the night, and you're right there with them in a well-worn armchair.

As always, The Deep Dark Woods' music exists in a proud continuum of songwriting, but this is a band whose influences can be felt more than heard. The spirit of the '60s and '70s hovers around the perimeter at all times, but truly only in spirit: there is no aping here, just an enviable ability to conjure that same world-weary-but-hopeful sound that, for instance, Levon and company patented across The Band's early '70s masterpieces. And that era leans heavily on the sonic palette of The Circle Remains as well; in a welcome detour from the trends of so much contemporary music, there is nothing about the album that screams “2025”. This “out of time” aspect can be attributed to their influences of course, but also to the analog tape-heavy recording process the band and producer David Parry (Alice Phoebe Lou, Loving) favoured for this album. And it makes perfect sense, adding a burnished quality to the album's sound and placing a premium on the considerable abilities of these musicians.

A passing listen to the voice of The Deep Dark Woods' Boldt may find one drawing comparisons to some of the other titans of this strain of intimate, personalized songwriting that emerged in the during the '90s “indie folk” scenes, but the more one listens, it becomes apparent that Boldt has carved out his own niche in this rarefied realm. His singing (which is often coated with the gentle spectre of good old-fashioned analog tape delay) is lilting and mellifluous, imbuing a floating, mercurial element to the performances, but it's also playful, each line gently teasing out the edges of his melodies.

While the general tone and timbre of the album is one of a well lived-in piece of clothing, there are a few songs on The Circle Remains that provide a few perhaps unexpected ear-catching moments.“Can't Keep From Singing” opens with a washy delay trail that would not sound out of place on a classic psych-folk album, then slides into one of those wily chord progressions that gently bends the mind a bit when first heard, but after repeat listens becomes absolutely crucial to the vibe of the song. “Golden Petal” revels in its three-quarter-time lope, glimpsing moments of pure, unadorned groove and a few swooping slide guitar smears from Evan Cheadle.

“Circle Remains Unbroken” sidles out of the gates with a deliciously restrained palette of tasty, deep-pocket drumming courtesy of Mike Silverman, (Kacy & Clayton), a perfectly locked-in bass line, and one of the most gossamer-like vocal performances Boldt committed to tape for this album. As the song progresses, a variety of keyboards enter surreptitiously, filling up towards the final moments of the song, before it fades away as elegantly as it began.

While The Circle Remains can be easily lauded for its effortlessly cohesive sound and focused temperament, the album's wildcard, without a doubt, is the magisterial keyboard playing of longtime member Geoff Hillhorst, whose deft touch moves between wonky, Garth Hudson-style organ moves (on “Sweet Grows The Fruit”, for instance) and lush, understated piano work throughout the album. On “Traded In Your Name”, Hillhorst alternates between sounding like he's learning the song on the fly, filling in holes with a jazz improviser's elegance and grace, and a moment later like he's lived in it for years, judiciously highlighting and supporting Boldt's delicate vocal melodies.

For both neophytes and the converted alike, The Circle Remains will be an easy point of entry for the uninitiated, and it will certainly provide another proof-positive for the longtime fan.
