"...a strange, provocative, frequently beautiful new record. It's called All Cylinders. Its songs are creative, imaginative, moving through radically different phases from one moment to the next." — NPR Music

"All Cylinders is the sound of Yves Jarvis going for it: He’s letting his melodies breathe, he’s working with clearly delineated verses and choruses, and he’s no longer hiding behind the haze." — Pitchfork

“An exuberant, kaleidoscopic mishmash of funk, yacht rock and electrifying guitar theatrics.” The Toronto Star

“[All Cylinders] is a multi-genre odyssey… Chasing the tail of Gainsbourg or Bacharach, Jarvis cannot avoid being a bit more erotic and ornate than them, with hints at the portable blues and post-D’Angelo R&B of L’Rain and Nick Hakim… now there is a conscious, sincere engagement with the classics Jarvis clearly adores—Paul McCartney, Love, Stevie Wonder, and Prince.” — Aquarium Drunkard

Yves Jarvis—the moniker of musician Jean-Sébastien Yves Audet—announces All Cylinders (Deluxe), out November 14th via Next Door Records, and shares the new single, “Man In His Pomp”. The expanded edition features five new tracks, including today’s single. Originally released in February 2025 to praise from a wide variety of outlets including NPR Music, Pitchfork, Esquire, The FADER, Guitar World, and Aquarium Drunkard, All Cylinders was awarded the 2025 Polaris Music Prize last month. It marks a major career milestone and is the perfect capstone to an incredible year that saw Jarvis tour with fellow artists Glass Animals, Olivia Dean, and Fabiana Palladino.

On All Cylinders, Yves Jarvis expresses a brazen songcraft and pure musicianship: 16 tracks he played himself, without a single additional contributor, transforming his vision into the stuff of verses and choruses, hooks and hits, which vibrates like a cosmic anthropology. At home, in the studio, at subletted apartments in Montreal and L.A.—he’d roll out of bed and get straight to work, plugging his gear into a half-broken laptop. Whereas once he had fetishized analog tape, now Jarvis appreciated the value of working without any such preciousness: much of All Cylinders was recorded on bare-bones Audacity, sans plugins, channeling the spirit of Paul McCartney’s II

Jarvis is an omnivore, and All Cylinders smashes together a stunning array of influences: Serge Gainsbourg, Judee Sill, Sheryl Crow, Captain Beefheart, Jackson Browne, Throbbing Gristle, Ray Charles, Brian Eno, Fleetwood Mac, Panic at the Disco…  All this is distilled into tunes that feel like taking sips from a cup, or drags from a cigarette—vivid and self-contained tunes that are just two or three minutes long. “I feel like this is the least contrived thing I’ve ever done,” Jarvis declares. Lyrics that matter. Vocals up front, where people will actually hear them. “If something’s true to you,” he explains, “it’s probably true to a million other people.”

PRAISE FOR YVES JARVIS

Jarvis takes his time with "Gold Filigree," plucking the bass as keys fall like raindrops, leaving plenty of space for his lyrics to land on your heart. Jarvis recommends this song for people who like "fornication, love-making, procreation, steak frites, Prince, Al Green, and Charlotte Day Wilson" — and he's not wrong.” CBC Music on Gold Filigree

“With the ramshackle majesty of a Prince demo, ‘Gold Filigree’ still feels as polished as the titular jewelry, and twinkles with admiration for a lover who’s so well put together, it could only be divine symmetry.” —The FADER, “Songs You Need In Your Life”

"Angelic folk led by an acoustic guitar strum and harmonies that would make Crosby, Stills and Nash want to join in." — Billboard Canada on “The Knife in Me”

Next month The Dears will release their ninth studio album, Life Is Beautiful! Life Is Beautiful! Life Is Beautiful!, a stirring set of eleven uplifting songs that are as passionate as they are urgent. The Montreal band’s first album since 2020’s Lovers Rock finds them questioning, and then celebrating this fleeting time spent on earth. The ups, the downs, the in betweens.

Today, they share the new single and video for “Tomorrow And Tomorrow”, which, underneath it all, could be a doo-wop tune written in the Brill Building, and the song emits a nostalgic familiarity even with the first listen. Singer and composer Murray Lightburn’s signature rich baritone paired with the soaring orchestration and dramatic flair the band is known for take the song into the sonic world of The Dears. The music video, directed by Kevin Drew and Rachael McLean nods to these elements as well: the black and white figure of Murray in quintuple vision evokes mid-century boy bands, while the gritty and psychedelic treatment place us squarely in the present moment.

MORE ABOUT LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL! LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL! LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL!
“I remember when it clicked in my brain what I was writing about,” shares Lightburn. “It was soon after we played a series of shows celebrating the 20th anniversary of No Cities Left. I was on stage surrounded by wonderful musicians, playing songs I wrote in my 20s. My kids and my mom were sitting up on the balcony of the theatre. Natalia was just to my right. I told the audience that sometimes it gets tough but that life is beautiful. I asked the audience to say it with me, three times: A mantra; a wish; an affirmation.”

In the last five years, The Dears performed rescheduled dates in support of Lovers Rock, undertook a run of shows celebrating the No Cities Left 20th anniversary, and band leaders Murray Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak both dove into new, individual creative projects. In addition to the release of his solo album Once Upon A Time In Montreal in 2023, Lightburn brought his orchestral sensibilities to film and TV composing, recently winning a 2025 Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Music in a Documentary for his work on Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story. Meanwhile, Yanchak entered the world of video game production at a Montreal-based studio while also writing her own independent title.

Much like previous albums Life Is Beautiful! Life Is Beautiful! Life Is Beautiful! was mostly recorded at Montreal’s Hotel2Tango. However, in a break from form, the record was made under the constraints of a disciplined and tight production schedule informed by Lightburn’s experience in film and television. The Dears banded together for a week in studio and within a month the record was completed, including final touches and mixing by Lightburn at his home studio, Murmajesty.

The result is a body of work that reflects a confidence in vision that can only be achieved through experience. With Life is Beautiful! Life is Beautiful! Life is Beautiful!, The Dears lock into their signature sound and style for songs that are familiar yet innovative, more forward-looking than nostalgic.

Perhaps New York Times bestselling author Jeff VanderMeer says it best, “Life Is Beautiful! Life Is Beautiful! Life is Beautiful! feels like a new masterpiece and provides further evidence that The Dears are a vital part of the musical landscape, and also just completely doing their own thing, as ever.”

“Life is tough, reflects Lightburn. “We experience challenges all the time. In our darkest hours we might think it’s never going to be better. But if we can just make it through, we find out what we thought was impossible; that we could smile again, maybe even laugh. We feel our loved ones. We find out how strong we can be. The songs in this record are for everyone and anyone. They are meant to be supportive.”

MORE ABOUT THE DEARS
Formed in 1995, The Dears released their first, ultra lo-fi album, End of a Hollywood Bedtime Story, in 2000. The orchestral, dark pop sound and dramatic live shows cemented The Dears at the foundation of the then-emerging Canadian indie-rock renaissance. Their live show was described as “the sonic equivalent of seeing the face of god.” In 2001 and 2002, they released two separate concept EPs Orchestral Pop Noir Romantique and Protest, respectively. In 2003 they released their second full-length album No Cities Left in Canada, and a string of highly anticipated shows at SXSW ‘04 prompted the international release of No Cities Left with Bella Union. Their 3rd album, Gang of Losers, came in 2006, was well received by the press, and was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. In 2008, the band released Missiles, followed by Degeneration Street (2011), Times Infinity Volume One (2015), Times Infinity Volume Two (2017), and Lovers Rock (2020).

The Dears have toured the world over, including performances on Letterman (twofold), Jimmy Kimmel, Jonathan Ross and at Glastonbury, T in the Park, Wireless, Montreal Jazz Fest, Siren Festival, Coachella, Austin City Limits, V Fest, Reading and Leeds, Les Inrocks (France), Montreux Jazz Fest, Istanbul Jazz Fest, Pop Montreal, CMW, NXNE and countless appearances at SXSW. They have shared stages with Spiritualized, Broken Social Scene, Daniel Lanois, Rufus Wainwright, Zemfira, Bloc Party, Keane, Morrissey, The Tragically Hip, Metric and Death From Above, to name a few.

The Dears will take to the stage this fall beginning with a Montreal performance on November 20. Tickets can be found HERE.

Austra, the pop project of vocalist and composer Katie Stelmanis, will release her fifth album Chin Up Buttercup on November 14 via Pink Fizz (Canada) and Domino (Worldwide), and today she shares her majestic new single “Siren Song”. Co-written with Montreal songwriter, musician and DJ Patrick Holland, “Siren Song” is a dreamy trance-like plea for connection.

“‘Siren Song’ exists somewhere at the intersection of ABBA, Ray of Light, The X-Files and Greek mythology,” says Stelmanis. “ABBA inspired the early songwriting with Patrick. The Siren introduced herself to me while I was improvising the demo recordings and I quickly realized that Orpheus would be our common nemesis. Following a recent X-Files binge, I was heavily inspired by Mulder’s desperate search for his sister. Ray of Light came in at the end as my co-producer Kieran Adams and I were establishing the sonic realm which would become the backdrop for our Siren to lament the loss of her lover to Orpheus and his pesky Lyre.” “Siren Song” comes via a video directed by Vanessa Magic.

Chin Up Buttercup features the previously released single “Math Equation,” which Stereogum named their #1 Best Song of the Week, writing, “The song is sonically bright but also full of empty space; it captures the sensation of being in an excited crowd and feeling completely alone. If Chin Up Buttercup is all similar heartbreak-inspired party anthems, count me in.”  Chin Up Buttercup is available to pre-order on limited edition Neon Orange vinyl, standard Black vinyl, CD and digitally. LP formats come with a A2 double-sided poster; the CD comes with a 6-panel poster. Pre-order HERE

MORE ABOUT CHIN UP BUTTERCUP
“Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up.” - Louise Erdrich

“I’m so chaotic in love,” sings Katie Austra Stelmanis on “Amnesia,” the cinematic opening track of Chin Up Buttercup, the fifth album by her alter ego and longtime pop project Austra. You know Austra’s astonishing voice – singular and operatic, it betrays a fearlessness and sophistication. She’s the woman you’d be afraid to approach in a bar. Her voice draws you like a siren to the dance floor as the beats build toward the hypnotic chorus of “my life is not the same without you in my arms.” Listen closely and you’ll hear a vulnerability that sets this album apart from her earlier work. This is a grief album you can dance to.

Mournful lyrics about the opprobrium of heartache join euphoric, live-for-today euro-dance inspired synth melodies, a juxtaposition that says what we all know: contrasting emotions like anxiety and excitement, pleasure and pain, and jealousy and attraction can feel indistinguishable in your body. Who Stelmanis might be off stage – a composer, a studious introvert, suffering from an obsession with a romantic betrayal – is set free by embodying the protagonist of this invigorating album-length journey. She’s a force, demonic, an emotionally-driven chaos monster, and she’s going to lead you to surrender.

Heartbreak is both an ordinary humiliation and uniquely devastating. Stelmanis describes Chin Up Buttercup as a narrative about “the alienating feeling of being heartbroken in a world that’s awkward and inconvenienced by your pain.” Most of us act as though romantic grief is more of an embarrassment than a universal wound. Stelmanis decided to lean into the character of the psycho creep, consumed by longing instead of aspiring toward detachment. The result of embracing this dual personality is an album that coolly moves through the madness and eschews traditional healing arcs that bend toward self-improvement. By the final track we love this anti-hero; she is shining a light on our universal shame, making us laugh at our own abject desperation.
