"Part variety show, part vaudeville theatre, part improv act and part poetry slam, the Basement Revue is a cross-disciplinary carnival where anything can happen, and often does” - The Globe and Mail

This December at The Paradise on Bloor, the half-music, half-literary variety show with a rock-’n’-roll sensibility and a unique Canadian voice, otherwise known as The Basement Revue, returns again this year for five nights on December 4, 11, 18, 23 and 30 for another series of extraordinary evenings.

The Basement Revue is hosted and curated by singer/songwriter Jason Collett and celebrated writer Emma Healey, and are joined by guest curator Cadence Weapon this year who will host the evening of December 11. "As an author and a musician, curating a night at the Basement Revue feels like a perfect fit,” says Cadence Weapon. “I'm looking forward to putting on an unforgettable night of boundary-pushing entertainment!"

MORE ABOUT THE BASEMENT REVUE
The initial Basement Revue was staged on a wintry night in 2007 at Toronto’s Dakota Tavern, exploring what happens when artists of different disciplines share the stage together. This has made for exciting collaborations, such as Feist backing up Michael Ondaatje or Margaret Atwood stepping up to the mic in front of one of Toronto’s most celebrated bands and saying, with her characteristic deadpan wit, “hit it Sadies.” Combining a compelling mix of musicians, storytellers, and poets with the improvisational spirit of a kitchen party, The Basement Revue has blossomed into one of Canada’s most dynamic live event series.

The Basement Revue presents the best emerging and established literary and musical talent of the country on stage in curated multi-disciplinary evenings. This kind of cross-pollinating is a one-of-a-kind format. The Globe and Mail said of its eighth season, “Part variety show, part vaudeville theatre, part improv act and part poetry slam, the Basement Revue is a cross-disciplinary carnival where anything can happen, and often does. The list of past participants reads like a who’s who of CanRock and CanLit, from Broken Social Scene to Sheila Heti and Cadence Weapon to Vincent Lam.”

In 2017, The Basement Revue partnered with Revolutions Per Minute (RPM) and New Constellations was born – a nation(s)wide tour celebrating Next Wave Indigenous music and writing. Bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists alike and featuring contributions from Polaris Music Prize winners Jeremy Dutcher and Lido Pimienta, as well as July Talk, Feist, Sam Roberts, Stars, Weaves, Billy Ray Belcourt, Naomi Klein and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson.

As is tradition for the Basement Revue, each night’s performers remain a surprise to the audience until they step on stage. Even the performers themselves are kept in the dark, adding an extra element of surprise to the evening. Past Basement Revues have boasted an impressive roster featuring Anne Waldman, Canisia Lubrin, Daniel Lanois, Tanya Tagac, Gord Downie, Rufus Wainwright, Marina Abromovic, Lee Maracle, Bahamas, Shad, Dennis Lee, Hal Wilner, CA Conrad, Weaves, Miriam Toews, Tanya Talaga, K-OS and more.

The Circle Remains, the new album from The Deep Dark Woods, is an exercise in understatement, showcasing a band who clearly knows what they're doing, and simply keeps getting better at doing it, paradoxically making it seem more and more effortless with each release. These nine gorgeous, mesmerizing tracks combine sturdy, heartfelt songwriting with sparkles of tiny, luminescent detail tucked into every corner of this album's sonic landscape. Shadowy and inviting, The Circle Remains sounds like the band playing in a darkened, fireplace-lit wood cabin in the middle of the night, and you're right there with them in a well-worn armchair.

To help celebrate the album’s release, The Deep Dark Woods are sharing the new video for “Can’t Keep From Singing”. This is a song “I wrote with my wife, Jenny Berkel,” says frontman Ryan Boldt. “It reflects the countless moments I’ve wanted to give up music but I keep coming back to it. Evan Cheadle played zither with a load of tape echo on the instrumental sections as well as mandolin and acoustics guitars, Geoff Hillhorst played piano and acetone, I played guitar and bass, and Mike Silverman contributed on bongos and drums.”

MORE ABOUT THE CIRCLE REMAINS
As always, The Deep Dark Woods' music exists in a proud continuum of songwriting, but this is a band whose influences can be felt more than heard. The spirit of the '60s and '70s hovers around the perimeter at all times, but truly only in spirit: there is no aping here, just an enviable ability to conjure that same world-weary-but-hopeful sound that, for instance, Levon and company patented across The Band's early '70s masterpieces. And that era leans heavily on the sonic palette of The Circle Remains as well; in a welcome detour from the trends of so much contemporary music, there is nothing about the album that screams “2025”. This “out of time” aspect can be attributed to their influences of course, but also to the analog tape-heavy recording process the band and producer David Parry (Alice Phoebe Lou, Loving) favoured for this album. And it makes perfect sense, adding a burnished quality to the album's sound and placing a premium on the considerable abilities of these musicians.

A passing listen to the voice of The Deep Dark Woods' Boldt may find one drawing comparisons to some of the other titans of this strain of intimate, personalized songwriting that emerged in the during the '90s “indie folk” scenes, but the more one listens, it becomes apparent that Boldt has carved out his own niche in this rarefied realm. His singing (which is often coated with the gentle spectre of good old-fashioned analog tape delay) is lilting and mellifluous, imbuing a floating, mercurial element to the performances, but it's also playful, each line gently teasing out the edges of his melodies.

While the general tone and timbre of the album is one of a well lived-in piece of clothing, there are a few songs on The Circle Remains that provide a few perhaps unexpected ear-catching moments.“Can't Keep From Singing” opens with a washy delay trail that would not sound out of place on a classic psych-folk album, then slides into one of those wily chord progressions that gently bends the mind a bit when first heard, but after repeat listens becomes absolutely crucial to the vibe of the song. “Golden Petal” revels in its three-quarter-time lope, glimpsing moments of pure, unadorned groove and a few swooping slide guitar smears from Evan Cheadle.

“Circle Remains Unbroken” sidles out of the gates with a deliciously restrained palette of tasty, deep-pocket drumming courtesy of Mike Silverman, (Kacy & Clayton), a perfectly locked-in bass line, and one of the most gossamer-like vocal performances Boldt committed to tape for this album. As the song progresses, a variety of keyboards enter surreptitiously, filling up towards the final moments of the song, before it fades away as elegantly as it began.

While The Circle Remains can be easily lauded for its effortlessly cohesive sound and focused temperament, the album's wildcard, without a doubt, is the magisterial keyboard playing of longtime member Geoff Hillhorst, whose deft touch moves between wonky, Garth Hudson-style organ moves (on “Sweet Grows The Fruit”, for instance) and lush, understated piano work throughout the album. On “Traded In Your Name”, Hillhorst alternates between sounding like he's learning the song on the fly, filling in holes with a jazz improviser's elegance and grace, and a moment later like he's lived in it for years, judiciously highlighting and supporting Boldt's delicate vocal melodies.

For both neophytes and the converted alike, The Circle Remains will be an easy point of entry for the uninitiated, and it will certainly provide another proof-positive for the longtime fan.

2026 EUROPEAN TOUR DATES WITH THE BROS LANDRETH BEGIN FEBRUARY 26

Later this month, Begonia (the stage name of Alexa Dirks) will release her new album, Fantasy Life, a collection of thirteen songs written under the heat of the sun in Los Angeles, California and then recorded during the dead of winter in Winnipeg. An album about the mundane and the magical, the delusional and the hopeful, the thrilling and the crushing. It’s the promise of spring and then all the snow melts to reveal piles of glittering garbage. It’s watching bright balloons float away into the clouds. It’s a slimy fleshy worm feeding a beautiful garden. A place to escape to but not to live forever.

Today, the celebrated songwriter and performer is sharing another track from the album, “Deep Red Cherry Night”, a song “about simple love,” says Dirks. “It's about all the beautiful mundane and magical moments that I started to notice when I finally found someone I could rest my trust in. I've spent a lot of my life writing songs about heartbreak, longing and striving to get to the other side of that. This song is a snapshot of what that other side looks like to me now. That doesn't mean that some of my past heartbreaks don't still exist within me but the pain I feel is now muted by something stronger, deeper and more hopeful. It's a love I want to be alive for!”

MORE ABOUT BEGONIA + FANTASY LIFE
Begonia is your best friend. She’s the whimsical fairy on your shoulder making you feel all at once comfortable to be yourself while simultaneously making you think wtf is this fairy doing here and what is she wearing. With a voice that compels you to feel everything deeper, she sings like she’s calling you into her world. Sure, on the surface it may simply look like a world overtaken by flowers, colour and lightness but go deeper and it’s also a world that doesn’t shy away from the dark. It’s a world that invites you to be exactly who you are without shame.

Begonia has many stories to tell, many iterations of life to walk you through, and she takes her fans on the journey with a stumbling grace and an uncanny wit. A true sight to behold, sometimes clunky but always beautifully and refreshingly entertaining. Begonia crafts some of the most honest pop music out there. With her new record Fantasy Life, she's simply at the top of her game. There’s more risk, more complex vocals, more pop diva mania, more feeling, more truth, and more fantasy.

“There’s a spirit of freedom to this record that was such a big part of the songwriting sessions I had in LA with deadmen (Matt Peters and Matt Schellenberg),” says Dirks. “I spent a little over a month in total with them writing this record every day and it’s the most RIGHT in songwriting sessions that I've ever felt. Everything felt so easy and fun and that has never happened to me quite like that before. This freedom allowed me to go to more complex places with my voice and in my lyrics than I have in the past. I feel like I’ve grown so much in my sound and my confidence in the last few years and I know that reflects in this record.”

Begonia’s bold sound and style, combined with an intimate connection with her audience, invite you to feel everything more deeply, making you feel at once seen and a part of her world that is both brilliantly vibrant and unafraid of the shadows. It’s a space where you’re not just a listener, but a confidante, invited to feel everything more deeply and be exactly who you are, without shame.

Her longtime artistic collaboration with music producers deadmen is a central part of her career. The duo has produced, played, and written on nearly all of Begonia’s releases, and they provide her a crucial space to be vulnerable and take risks. The collaboration is anchored by an impenetrable emotional and creative connection.

Begonia launched her solo career in 2017 with the EP Lady in Mind, featuring the #1 CBC Radio single "Juniper". Her critically acclaimed full-length albums Fear (2019) and Powder Blue (2023) have earned her two JUNO Award nominations and two Polaris Music Prize nominations. Recognized by NPR as an ‘Artist You Need to Know’, Begonia is celebrated by her core fans for her powerful live performances, which Noisey describes as “obliterating the misery from this world one live performance at a time." Her captivating stage presence has opened doors for her to perform at clubs, theatres, and festivals globally, connecting with audiences worldwide.
