DAN MANGAN SHARES “A CHRISTMAS SONG”

Today, Dan Mangan is sharing "A Christmas Song". Bittersweet, nostalgic, and more honest than the genre typically allows, it’s safe to say we might have a modern Christmas classic on our hands.  It "actually feels like how Christmas feels," says Mangan. The track beautifully articulates the tension between the mythological glow of the holiday season and our imperfect contemporary reality, fitting naturally within the sonic world most recently established in Natural Light, Mangan's seventh studio album, released earlier this year.

“Christmas music thrives on nostalgia,” explains Mangan. “As much as I do love a lot of Christmas music, I’ve always felt a bit disconnected from it - like there’s this overzealous desire to telegraph a seasonal elation that isn’t quite realistic. It can feel disingenuous or superficial. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, we get caught between our desire to feel that mythological glow and the imperfect nature of real life in the present. Sometimes Christmas feels bittersweet, and that’s just part of it. I’ve often been asked if I’d consider writing ‘a Christmas song’, so I decided to write an honest one.”

Today, David Vertesi is releasing the 15th Anniversary Edition of Cardiography, a new acoustic reimagining of the record that launched his solo career. Originally released in 2010, Cardiography introduced Vertesi’s distinct voice as a storyteller — intimate, vulnerable, and unflinchingly sincere. The album blended lush instrumentation with emotional clarity, earning praise for its melodic craftsmanship and evocative lyricism.

Vertesi returns to these songs with a renewed perspective. Cardiography (Acoustic) strips the material back to its emotional core, highlighting the raw honesty and timeless songwriting that have defined his work ever since. Recorded in a live, minimalist setting, and production by longtime collaborator Daniel Klenner (Peach Pit, Dear Rouge, Hey Ocean!), the new release captures the quiet intensity of Vertesi’s performances and invites listeners to hear the songs as they were first written — simple, direct, and deeply human.

To celebrate today’s release, Vertesi is sharing a live performance video of the acoustic version of album track, “All Night, All Night, All Night”. “I often think about Cardiography as a heartbreak record, but upon re-recording it I realized there’s more to it than that,” says Vertesi. “It sprung from a time when I was learning how to love. The lessons can be painful, but also beautiful. ‘All Night, All Night, All Night’ paints a picture of young love. I wrote this song about sneaking out at night to go sleep over at my then girlfriend’s house and imagining my Dad waking up to discover I wasn’t home. In an album that focuses a lot on heart break, this song means even more, as it is a reminder of what we are fighting for as well as what is lost when things don’t I work out.

“My dear friend Hannah Georgas lent her vocals to the original album and I’m so grateful to have her back again on these acoustic versions so many years later.”

MORE ABOUT DAVID VERTESI + CARDIOGRAPHY
For fifteen years, David Vertesi has appeared as an integral part of some of Canada’s most exciting indie-rock projects. Whether he’s playing in Hey Ocean!, Shad, Dear Rouge, Hannah Georgas, or Said the Whale, producing Haley Blais, Jordan Klassen, Noble Son, Ashleigh Ball, or Riun Garner, Vertesi brings a uniquely sensuous and brooding sensibility, an intricate sonic depth that multiplies the layers of a song.

In fact, fifteen years ago, Vertesi released his acclaimed debut album, Cardiography. At the time, Line Of Best Fit called the LP “an accomplished debut and a further testament to the ever evolving Canadian music scene,” while Exclaim! noted that "Vertesi's played his cards right" throughout the record.

In his solo work, these dramatic flairs ignite on full display. Across a spectrum of rough-and-tumble and tightly polished sounds, Vertesi emerges as a centre-stage, dusty spotlight balladeer, a close-to-the-chest storyteller as the narrative core of his songwriting revolves in stories of confusion, loneliness, instability, death, and existential ennui. Across 2010’s Cardiography, 2016’s Sad Dad Cruise Ship, and 2020’s Life Ghouls, Vertesi interrogates these somber questions with tender poetry and a sense of humour.

His latest LP Fictionalized, is the clearest synthesis of his wide-ranging pop philosophy yet. Effectively a concept album on the collective spiraling of the pandemic years through an intensely personal lens, Vertesi crafts the most potent and memorable melodies of his career. With featured performances from a lineup of some of Vancouver’s brightest talents: Jordan Klassen, Haley Blais, Jill Barber, and Sam Lynch, plus co-production from the likes of Jonathan Anderson (Andy Shauf, Aidan Knight), Klassen (Dear Rouge, Jillian Lake) and Daniel Klenner (Peach Pit, Babe Corner), Fictionalized marks a new and defined landscape for Vertesi. As powerful and personal as he’s ever been, as cathartic and kind as he’s ever appeared.

Throughout his work, Vertesi has made clear that he brings an equal command to choreographing lush and buzzing technologic atmospheres of instrumentation or squeezing the naked emotional heart out of a piano, a steady bass drum, the soft rhythm of a guitar, a choir of harmonies. But it’s his own voice that distinguishes his music, a growling inimitable baritone that deepens his playful work and further darkens his more haunted questions. It’s easy to hear why he draws comparisons to names like Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, and Lou Reed and easy to see why Vertesi has emerged from his collaborative role into a fully formed front-man of his own musical expression.

RAE SPOON RETURNS TO COUNTRY MUSIC, SHARES COVER OF CHARLI XCX’S “APPLE”

Photo Credit : Wynne Neilly // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

On their latest release, Rae Spoon takes Charli XCX’s cult-favourite “Apple” and gives it a brand-new shape: trading synths for pedal steel, glossy beats for country twang. Backed by a band of seasoned Canadian musicians, the cover bridges Rae’s folk and country roots with their knack for reimagining modern pop through a deeply personal lens.

“I wanted to do a country cover of a pop song as part of the process of returning to making country music,” says Spoon. “I spent Brat Summer reconnecting with Berlin and it was really healing after I hadn't been able to travel for many years. I love Charli XCX and I thought that ‘Apple’ was such a strong song that it would be great in any genre. I love making both country and electronic music, so it felt like a great fit.”

Recorded and produced by Spoon in Montreal, “Apple” features Ky Brooks, Laurie Torres, Evelyn Charlotte Joe (Pink Snail), and Robyn Gray (Ky, Powerdrop). With the new single, Spoon's artistic evolution enters a new phase, challenging conventional country music narratives while reconnecting with the genre's often overlooked queer history, expanding its boundaries through a contemporary queer lens. With “Apple,” Rae Spoon proves again why they are one of Canada’s most innovative and enduring voices: able to take an iconic song and make it entirely their own.

Rae Spoon is one of Canada’s most beloved and adventurous independent musicians, known for experimental musicality while staying rooted in authentic storytelling. With over a dozen albums, multiple award nominations, and a reputation for fearless creativity, Spoon continues to surprise listeners with each new project.
