“Over the course of their 20-plus-year career, the New Pornographers have often specialized in catchy ambiguity. If leader Carl Newman was just a machine cranking out power-pop tunes, it would get boring. But there’s also a lot of mixed emotions going on under the surface of their studiously nuanced pop-rock formalism—like if Cheap Trick was as quick-witted as Steely Dan, or the Romantics were as thoughtful as R.E.M.” - Rolling Stone

Today, The New Pornographers share “Pure Sticker Shock”, the latest single from their highly anticipated new album, The Former Site Of, due March 27, 2026 on Merge Records. The album is available for pre-order now via both Merge Records and the band’s webstore. The record is also available in an exclusive “Mai Tai” LP variant and “Spilled Ink” LP variant.

The band turns their focus inward on “Pure Sticker Shock” as frontperson A.C. Newman’s  lyrics grapple with self-worth over jamming synth-pop refrains. “This song is not about a specific event, but it has felt very 'applicable' to me and this year of my life,” Newman shares, “It basically asks the question 'What has worth? Who is deciding?' Your market value is not always your value."

On The Former Site Of, the tenth studio album from the acclaimed supergroup, ten short stories of people at personal and societal extremes are collected as meticulously crafted pop songs. The record was first crafted by Newman in his home studio before being brought to the band, composed of Newman, Kathryn Calder, Neko Case, John Collins and Todd Fancey. The group is joined for the first time by storied session drummer Charley Drayton (Divinyls, The Rolling Stones, Fiona Apple). Josh Wells (Destroyer, Black Mountain) will join as the touring drummer for the band’s upcoming dates in the Spring.

Of the making of the album, Newman notes, “Having time in my studio really opened things up. I don’t like wasting my bandmates’ time, and always felt guilty when I’d give them a song, ask them to do something, then completely change the song and ask them to do it again. Now I can get the skeleton of a song together first—just a couple of elements, the key feeling, really as little as possible—before bringing it to the band and running from there.”

The band will kick off their U.S. tour on April 22 at The Wilbur in Boston with stops at New York’s Webster Hall, Los Angeles’ Teragram Ballroom, Chicago’s The Metro, Washington D.C.’s 9:30 Club and many more, with support from Will Sheff of Okkervil River. Tickets are available now at thenewpornographers.com, full details and a list of dates can be found below.

In addition to “Pure Sticker Shock,” the album features the group’s most recent single, “Votive”, released in January to acclaim from The New York Times, Pitchfork, AV Club and more. The album’s first single “Ballad Of The Last Payphone” is available as a limited 7-inch vinyl first release. Paste named it one of their Best New Songs, raving that “‘Ballad Of The Last Payphone’ hits a different kind of nerve. Less giddy power-pop, more slow-burn meditation, the track leans into melancholy with acoustic strums, ghostly pedal steel, and vocals that swirl like a memory you can’t quite shake.”

The New Pornographers have released nine studio albums, including their classic debut, Mass Romantic, reissued in 2021 to celebrate its 21st anniversary. Their latest, 2023’s Continue as a Guest, marked their debut for Merge Records; New York Magazine lauded, “The New Pornographers are a massive unit bursting with unique and intersecting talents…the band’s ninth album serves another helping of their signature dish,” while Brooklyn Vegan named it “one of The New Pornographers’ most lush albums, thick with synthesizers and horns and harmonies…their unique chemistry is as distinct and appealing as ever.”

Gord Downie, The Sadies, And The Conquering Sun released their debut self-titled album in 2014, a triumphant ten song barnburner that clashes the late Gord Downie's indelible poetry with the brash, inspired playing of The Sadies, whose resume already included albums with Neko Case, Jon Spencer, John Doe, and Andre Williams, to name a few. Not a one-off, but a brotherhood, Gord Downie, The Sadies, And The Conquering Sun struck a punk-addled chemistry verging on possessed, compelled by Downie's peerless words, unbridled charisma, and the unencumbered playing of Mike Belitsky, Sean Dean, Travis Good, and the late Dallas Good. The summer tour of that album blazed a trail of indescribably fiery performances of the album, riddled with incendiary covers of punk & psych rock greats, a rare intensity now captured on the concert album, Live At 6 O'Clock.

Releasing February 27 via Arts & Crafts, Live At 6 O’Clock captures the electricity of Gord Downie, The Sadies, And The Conquering Sun at their zenith. Featuring eight lightning strike performances selected from four festival sets – including covers of Roky Erickson, The Who, Neil Young, The Gun Club, The Stooges, and two originals from the debut album – Live At 6 O’Clock is a rare document of Downie and The Sadies’ legendary energy in supremely elevated punk rock form. Introducing the album today is their transcendent performance of "Generation" originally by Toronto hardcore legends Fucked Up. With Downie pushing beyond his limit, in combustion with The Sadies, “Generation” leads this cherished snapshot of an incomparable band, a pure expression of visceral and everlasting exultation.

MARS ASPEN’S BABY TEETH EP, OUT TODAY

Photo Credit: Oluchi // DOWNLOAD HIGH RES

On their new EP baby teeth, available today, Mars Aspen (they/them) offers raw, direct snapshots into the ups and downs of past relationships with others—as well as their relationship with their own mental health. The EP is “a collection of memories that all tie to growing up and moving forward to better things,” explains Aspen. “As someone who has been very much ruled by mental health issues in the past, this EP touches on the long journey of radical acceptance, carving a path out of that dark space, all while giving a voice to the confused and scared kid that had to navigate through that time. From the wake-up call of ‘spilled milk’, the emotional processing of ‘i’d like to stay mad’, the turmoil and self-loathing of ‘pest control’ and ‘i want to be so sweet’, to the grieving and growing of ‘baby teeth’, this EP is an ode to what I feel is the start of a purposeful life.”

Today, they’re also sharing the new live performance video of “i’d like to stay mad”, a song that “is a clear message that we feel our emotions for a reason,” says Aspen. “It was inspired by a person I was with briefly, who was never truthful in what they said. This song touches on the frustration of walking on eggshells, the concept of fight vs. flight vs. freeze vs. fawn, just to feel some semblance of safety, and the bitter end result of simply staying mad about how everything came to be.”

MORE ABOUT BABY TEETH EP
Courageous enough to be vulnerable, Mars Aspen gets real with their lush folk confessionals. This Ottawa-based songwriter digs into the hardest parts of intimate connections, spilling their heart so that you—in turn—can better understand your own.

Aspen honed their production skills with 2022’s shimmering in orbit! EP (recorded entirely in Aspen’s basement). baby teeth features stunning arrangements dreamed up alongside producer Kieran Isley swaying from haunting, softly-strummed ballads to Kate Bollinger-inspired folk-pop. Aspen makes these songs soar with strata of vocal harmonies, as on the divine folk incantation “i want to be so sweet”.

Having always practiced songwriting as a form of therapy, Aspen’s songs on baby teeth are disarming in their candour. “pest control” explores the complexities of queer relationships and the painstaking process of digging into the reasons why some of them simply (or catastrophically) end (as Aspen sings, ‘I attract what I give / I give all that I am / nothing I won’t submit’). Aspen confronts holding onto righteous anger on “i’d like to stay mad”, a dissection of social toxicity. Aspen approaches songwriting by “dumping emotions onto a page, letting them settle, and rearranging them to sound like a song,” and you can hear them work out these interpersonal conflicts like puzzles. There’s a sense of calm in hearing the trauma settle, in hearing the narrator grow.

baby teeth is ultimately a collection of songs about growth. “They’re about realizing that we need to grow up sometimes,” Aspen laughs, “despite how jarring a sentence that is!” Having flirted with frustration, disavowal, and finally, bittersweet resolve, Aspen is leaving plenty of room for all that is to come.
