There's a particular way light particles interact that Montreal-based folk singer-songwriter Edwin Raphael captures in his thoughtfully expansive, globe-trotting soundscapes. "Mosaic in the Sun" and "A Sunbeam Lent to Us Briefly," arrive with the breathless wonder of language's inability to articulate the emotional heft of a momentary prism falling upon the scene just so.”
- Exclaim!, Most Anticipated Albums of 2026

“...it’s indie folk with enough orchestral weight to fill a room. These are songs built for distance and open windows.” - Montreal Rocks

“Buzzing drones meet uplifting guitar melodies as Edwin Raphael’s imaginative narrative unravels on First Time on Earth. The ebbs and flows from bursts of energy to pulled-back introspective moments. Life brings with it more questions than answers, but it’s seeking beauty in the mundane, in the wonder of small miracles, that we find meaning." CBC Music, 'Songs You Need To Hear'

Today, Edwin Raphael releases his new album I Know A Garden, and to help mark the occasion, he’s sharing the new video for album track, “Hymn For A Dragonfly”. This song is about “the summers I spent as a kid at my grandmother’s forest home in Kerala,” explains Raphael. “It was a time where everything felt mythical, especially dragonflies. They were tiny creatures carrying a quiet sense of wonder; they were a reminder that magic is everywhere if you look long enough.”

The video that accompanies “Hymn For A Dragonfly” moves “through my memories like a fever dream,” says Raphael. “It’s me and my sisters running barefoot around the house and through the forest, embracing a carefree childhood, one where the days seemed endless. I wanted the video to feel like a memory: soft around the edges and hard to hold still.”

MORE ABOUT EDWIN RAPHAEL
With roots in Kerala, India, Raphael studied classical guitar before deciding on the keys. As he developed an affinity for John Mayer and Ben Howard, he felt at odds with a distinct sense of “placelessness”. It wasn’t until he moved to Montreal to pursue a business degree that he felt a sense of stability, and became deeply entangled with the city’s indie bedroom pop scene.

His debut EP Ocean’s Walk (2015) paired stirring, melancholic instrumentals with a fierce self-reckoning. It would set the stage for a string of releases that would dive deeper into the psyche; like confronting the aftershocks following a significant heartbreak, or relearning your emotional baseline as you mature. Subsequent releases, Cold Nights (2017)Will You Think of Me Later? (2019), and its follow up Staring at Ceilings (2021), reveal an artist devoted to sharpening his ability to translate his experiences into ubiquitous statements.

The 2024 re-release of Will You Think of Me Later? has amassed 115 million streams on Spotify. Edwin has performed over 70 shows across 14 countries since 2023, sharing the stage alongside Palace, Hollow Coves, Noah Kahan, and more. He heads out on tour throughout Quebec beginning March 27 and a U.K. and European tour commences May 14  All dates are below.

ARIEL POSEN’S NEW LP OUT TODAY, SHARES “MORE ME WITH YOU” FT. KATHLEEN EDWARDS

On his new album, Bannatyne, exploration leads Ariel Posen back to the place where everything began. Named after an avenue in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, it's a record about reexamining one's past in order to fully appreciate the present. Woven into the album's 12 songs are larger-than-life riffs and upbeat tempos (a nod to the 1990s rock music that soundtracked Posen's childhood), along with the syncopated grooves and explorative, unexpected textures that have always steered his work. Equally influenced by the raw energy of his live shows — where Posen has been known to plug in and stretch out, showcasing the chops that prompted Rolling Stone to call him "a modern-day guitar hero" — and the tight craft of his songwriting, Bannatyne is a full-circle snapshot of an artist in evolution, chasing down new horizons while still honouring his musical roots.

"This is an album about coming home," says Posen, who played guitar for hometown pals, The Bros. Landreth — earning a JUNO Award along the way — before launching his solo career with the critically-celebrated debut How Long. "It's about looking back and appreciating where you come from, even as you're heading somewhere new."

Today he’s highlighting the album track, “More Me With You” featuring Kathleen Edwards. The song itself “explores the rare kind of connection that makes you feel more like yourself rather than less,” explains Posen. “It reflects on the mysterious ways certain people bring out parts of us we didn’t know existed. It is about that feeling—when being around someone makes you more yourself. It also touches on the mystery of relationships and how sometimes those connections exist even when distance or circumstance keeps people apart.”

Edwards adds that, “Ariel has always been the quiet virtuoso hanging in the corner, undeniably good and musically assured. Getting to sing on a song with him is a dream come true, especially since the moment comes so rarely - his instrumental prowess makes way for a song where I get to sing with him. Truly, an honour.“

MORE ABOUT ARIEL POSEN AND BANNATYNE
For Ariel Posen, songwriting and guitar playing have always gone hand-in-hand. He's spent a decade building a bridge between those two worlds, balancing his work as a hotshot instrumentalist — including collaborations with everyone from John Mayer to Tom Jones — with solo albums rooted in melody and autobiographical storytelling. The result is a career that's every bit as diverse as his music. With performances at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival, his own Fender Stratocaster signature model, and a powerful voice that matches his fretwork, Posen explores uncharted territory, blurring the lines between genre and generation along the way.

"Heading somewhere new" has been Posen's focus for years, ever since How Long introduced his blend of soulful rock & roll, R&B, and amplified Americana in 2019. Follow-up releases like Headway and Reasons Why widened that sound considerably, while the Mile End project — a trio of records filled with improvised guitar instrumentals — highlighted a different form of expression. Bannatyne covers new ground, too. There are appearances by fellow Canadian exports Dallas Green aka City and Colour (who appears on the gritty, grooving "Empty-Handed") and Kathleen Edwards (who shares vocal duties with Posen on the sparse, slow-burning love song "More Me With You"). There are seize-the-day anthems like "Future Present Tense," punctuated by layered harmonies and bursts of fuzz guitar. There are alternate guitar tunings, smoothly-sung vocals, and lyrics about the homes we all leave behind, delivered by a road warrior who's been carving out his signature sound with every album. It's a powerful mix, and while Posen has never been shy about honouring his influences, the album simply sounds like him.

"Every record is the sound of me finding myself, more and more," he says. "I'm not just a songwriter and I'm not just a guitarist. I'm both of those things. I'm taking these worlds that I feel very connected to, and I'm combining them together, leaning in either direction whenever I want. With Bannatyne, the idea was to be a little dirtier, rawer, and unpolished in my performances. I didn't worry about chasing absolute perfection and cleanliness. I just stuck with whatever felt right."

Co-produced by Posen and longtime collaborator Murray Pulver, Bannatyne certainly feels right. This is Posen's unique vision of electrified roots music: song-driven, fretwork-fueled, and unmistakably his own.

JESSE NORTHEY PONDERS THE PARADOXES OF FRIENDSHIP ON NEW SINGLE, “DO I BELONG?”

Photo Credit : Colin Medley // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

There’s a disarming, gentle power to Jesse Northey’s songcraft. The Toronto-based musical polymath has spent a decade and a half honing his skills at writing just-right pop songs that distill a world of feeling into a few choice lines. Northey’s warm, mellow songs deconstruct the artifice of masculinity and paint humanistic portraits of those around him. You can hear Northey’s dedication to capital “P” pop across his solo debut, Onion Knight, produced by Thomas D’Arcy (The Sheepdogs, NOBRO).

Today, Northey returns with the new single, “Do I Belong?”, a song of “ego, a song of love, a song of reflection, and a song of belonging,” he explains. “Are you the one for me? Am I God? Will you still like me if I change?”

Grounded in his melodic approach to the piano, Jesse Northey’s new single, “Do I Belong?” is an open-hearted ode in what can feel like an increasingly closed-off, individualistic world. Northey ponders the paradoxes of friendship and embarks on a delicate dance of change and growth, only to return to the titular question that started the journey. Playfully sincere, “Do I Belong?” stops you in your tracks to consider your place in the world.

Mixed by Jesse Turnbull and recorded in Northey’s home studio, the latest single sounds like a warm hug: the fuzzy feeling invoked by the truly spiritual sides of religion, with none of the baggage. There’s a divine balance of instrumentation, as Northey homing in on precisely what is needed in every verse, every phrase: some congas here, a 70s guitar lick there courtesy of Edmonton-born, LA-based songsmith Michael Rault, and gently melodic piano chords guiding you throughout.

The video for “Do I Belong?” captures the song’s universalist spirit with playful reverence. A tongue-in-cheek riff on Northey’s childhood memories of being a church youth leader and listening to his mom playing hymns on an organ, the video sees Northey and his musical buddies play hippie preachers, jamming out in the sanctuary like it’s 1969.

MORE ABOUT JESSE NORTHEY
Jesse Northey’s current project blossomed out of his decades of experience across the Canadian musical landscape. Over the years, Northey has contributed in countless ways: as an artist manager, label manager, studio engineer (he’s got a degree in Digital Audio Arts), producer—and, at the centre of it all, his work as a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter. Leading the band Jesse & the Dandelions for a solid decade, Northey toured from Alberta to Japan, sharing stages with Hollerado, Said the Whale, and July Talk along the way.

Northey’s on the prestigious High Priestess Publishing roster, which has led to songs appearing in far-flung places such as the Jesse Moss documentary Mayor Pete, and Netflix’s “My Life With The Walter Boys”. As the head of Victory Pool, a record label and management company, Northey currently supports an impressive variety of acts, including Ghostkeeper, The Deep Dark Woods, MOONRIIVR, and Lauren Dillen. “I do better when switching focus all the time,” Northey explains. Northey’s earnest passion has driven him to tend to a vibrant community of the most impactful musicians in the game. By nurturing others, Jesse Northey thrives.

This knack for versatility was on full display when Northey decided to move from writing on guitar to exploring the keys. In a world full of guitar guys, Northey taught himself piano. Studying a Beatles songbook, Northey was soon uncovering new layers of expression, and the current project was born.

Northey’s music is marked by his earnest, lifelong devotion to crafting, practicing, and sharing music. His work is not only vibrant and thoughtful; it also might just softly disarm whatever cynicisms may be holding you back today.
