“‘Must Come Spring’ is a triumphant saga of tender poetry, transcendent melodies and textured R&B” - PAPER

“Mind Bath creates melodies as soothing as a long bath by candlelight.” - Red Bull

“Delicate vocals, with shades of spoken word poetry, fade into and resurge from synth-driven groove; visceral emotion echoes from sonic lacunae.” - Wonderland

Montreal-based Mind Bath returns with a new single “Acid Nine”, marking his first release of 2026. A vocalist, producer, writer, performer and DJ, he is a shapeshifting storyteller whose work blurs the boundaries between music, literature and myth.

Recorded during a residency at Camp Flirty, a secluded, gay cabin in the woods, “Acid Nine” highlights his left-field production and intimate vocal style, further cementing his status as an underground favourite, with a practice rooted as much in spiritual devotion as it is in sonic exploration.

“Acid Nine” is a “ritualistic piece of music,” explains Mind Bath. “The portal opener. You are led by erotic, ecstatic energy, cultivating deeper listening. Horns are blowing. Spirits are filtering out of the woods in hoodies and cloaks and leather. The angels are dancing naked. You walk together in the oneness, winding up slowly like incense smoke, strumming guitars. I call in the ancestors at 1:09, singing: ‘Those who came before us, with futuristic love.’”

“Acid Nine” was written by Mind Bath, Forever, Nick Ferraro, and Ouri, at Nick’s cottage. “We were chilling by the lake when Forever started playing these chords on the Prophet, summoning us back to jam in symbiosis. For us as a band, experimenting with this song unlocked something special. I encourage you, dear listener, to experiment with ‘Acid Nine’ as well. Light a candle. Bury something. See what happens. Magic is real.”

Mind Bath first received critical acclaim with his 2019 debut album Baby You Can Free Your Mind, described by PAPER Magazine as “soft, emotional, and stirring.” He has also received further support from The FADER, Highsnobiety, Vice, Clash, and Gorilla vs. Bear, among others. His music has received multiple spins on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Future R&B program with Jamz Supernova, and he has opened for Milk & Bone and Moses Sumney.

Since then, Mind Bath has continued to create a distinct body of work that cultivates deeper listening and transformation.

This Friday, just ahead of Mother’s Day weekend, award-winning Toronto singer-songwriter Abigail Lapell will release her new album Shadow Child, an album about motherhood whose nine songs each represent a month of gestation.

Every mother has a unique story. One thing is true for every mother, though: there’s no deadline quite like a pregnancy. Abigail Lapell was pregnant with her first child when she booked studio time on Vancouver Island to make an album about motherhood. The nine songs on Shadow Child, one for each month of gestation, had to be ready before then, and her return flight was booked on the last day she could safely fly in her third trimester.

Today, Lapell is sharing the new video for album lead track, "Whistle Song (One in A Million)”, a song about “beating the odds, and finding small miracles in the everyday,” she says. “I shot this time lapse video on super 8 film high above the streets of Toronto. To me, those images echo the song's themes of interconnectedness, fragile yet hopeful. A vast, numinous cityscape in light and shadow -- seemingly solid, always in flux."

MORE ABOUT SHADOW CHILD
Working with producer Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, Black Mountain), Lapell finished her songs in the studio and on rural walks beside the Pacific Ocean. She enlisted some of her favourite singers, all British Columbians, all mothers: Frazey Ford, Jill Barber, Pharis Romero. “They’re all people with unique, distinctive voices,” she says, “which is what I’m drawn to.”

For Shadow Child, musically, Lapell was looking for a stark, acoustic sound, as opposed to 2024’s JUNO Award-nominated Anniversary (recorded in Niagara with Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker) and 2022’s acclaimed Stolen Time (recorded in Montreal with Howard Bilerman, featuring E Street Band saxophonist Jake Clemons).

Lapell’s road to motherhood was fraught, involving years of IVF and a 2023 miscarriage — that she experienced on stage while on tour. (She finished her set.) Her son was born in November 2024. The song cycle of Shadow Child covers joy and loss, using metaphors from Maritime tragedy, “little cannibals,” reproductive health, acquiring language, and lives altered by the arrival of a newborn. The title track refers to ultrasound imaging of “a liminal person that doesn’t quite exist yet,” says Lapell. “Their status is ontologically blurry.”

Today, punk-rocker / folk storyteller Evan Redsky is sharing the new single, “Red Dress” on Red Dress Day, or National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+). “This song began as a tribute to women I knew and lost during my time working as an Indigenous youth worker in Toronto,” says Redsky. “It later took on new weight in response to the news coming out of Winnipeg a few years ago, and the ongoing reality of the MMIW crisis.

“I was feeling the exhaustion and frustration of the 24-hour news cycle, and the way stories like these so often receive fleeting attention despite their deep roots in our shared history. With this song, I leaned into the folk tradition of protest trying to create something grounded in that lineage, but shaped by my own lived experience.”

MORE ABOUT EVAN REDSKY + THE LANGUAGE OF FISHERMEN
Growing up on the Mississaugi First Nation reserve of Blind River, Ontario, Redksy was often compelled to hitchhike to Toronto to immerse himself in the city’s burgeoning punk and hardcore music scene. Redsky recalls sleeping under bridges and on construction sites, dedicated to making music happen. At 19 years old, Redsky started performing with punk outfit Single Mothers, going on to perform with the JUNO Award-nominated group everywhere from local clubs to Primavera Sound to the Pitchfork Music Festival. However, as the group saw increasing success, Redsky felt more and more empowered to explore other musical paths and tell his own stories.

Seeking inspiration for this latest record, The Language Of Fishermen, Redsky happened upon the works of celebrated Ojibwe author Richard Wagamese. Many of the songs on The Language of Fishermen were inspired by Wagamese’s stories, especially those from his autobiographical book One Native Life.

Redsky, like Wagamese, is Anishinabek, and the two share the experience of growing up in the bush, on reserve, and navigating between cultural worlds. Between honouring Wagamese’s words and sharing his own reflections, Redsky’s The Language of Fishermen contains a lifetime of feeling—including honouring the often overlooked positive moments of simplicity and fulfillment.

As for the stories in Redsky’s The Language Of Fishermen, his desire to share them can be traced to his prominent lineage of storytellers within his community. Notably, his great-grandfather, James Redsky, whose book The Great Leader of The Ojibway was published by the University of Toronto in the early 1970s. James Redsky was a prominent member of the spiritual group known as the Midewiwin and was one of the last people to possess ancient birch bark scrolls depicting centuries-old etchings that informed the community of much of their pre-colonial history.

The theme of healing on The Language of Fishermen — and questioning if, when, and how healing can be accomplished — comes from Redsky’s own journey in the past few years. Through meditation, sobriety, and music, “The healing journey is constantly transforming,” Redsky says. But having known many Indigenous people who need permission to forgive themselves, and allow the healing process to begin, this song feels boldly overt, honest.

A couple decades into making music, with many more stretching out ahead, Redsky’s story is one of staying committed over the years, trusting the process, and trusting himself. Like the rolling highways Redsky sings of the song, “Northern Road”, with a “starry night beyond those headlights that could go on forever,” Redsky’s journey goes on.
