“The vast cycle of starry life bore his weary mind outward to its verge and inward to its centre, a distant music accompanying him outward and inward. What music?” - James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

mirador is the fourth album from Montreal pianist and composer Jean-Michel Blais, set for release on September 25, 2026 via Arts & Crafts. It is Blais’ first release following his critically acclaimed collaborative album with Lara Somogyi, released last year. Announced today alongside new single “ulysse,” the new record finds the Montreal artist turning his gaze onto a wide, wondrous world - exchanging contemporary minimalism for a light and generous maximalism. It is an odyssey that spans choirs, strings and the music of the Andes, from Spanish caves to Estonian forests and all the way back to the basement in Nicolet, Québec, where Blais first imagined adventures. As a musical kid and, even if he wasn't fully aware of these things yet, as a queer person, with Tourette's, Blais' hideaway was his imaginary lookout, his “mirador,” from which he could dream the world.

“What strange place is this where time dissolves, suspended between sky and earth, between the real and the surreal, with no other bearing than the trace of sunlight slipping through a tiny window, slowly tracing its path along a cold white-brick wall,” says Blais. “There is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in. One knocks, one shouts, yet no one comes, save for this dense silence. Until, by chance, by wandering, a door opens from within. a fissure is enough. the desire for an else where still unknown, a will, a direction finally accepted. guilt fades, the troubled mind regains its order. light returns. The sensation of stepping out of a wardrobe, a renewed coming out, and freedom appears, not as promise but as chosen risk, as adventure willingly embraced.”

With more than 375 million streams globally to his name and having played the largest live performances of his career to date, mirador began with Blais reflecting on childhood memories of building imaginary worlds in his parents’ basement. The album’s title references those early “lookout” spaces, places of refuge, invention and possibility. Working with composer and arranger William Brittelle (LA Philharmonic, The National), he had assembled a choir of 12 baroque singers and then added a string quartet of his friends. Blais also enlisted Tulio Velazco Villagra, a master of Andean instruments. Elsewhere residencies at the Arvo Pärt Centre informed the meditative atmosphere. The result is Blais’ most adventurous and transportive work yet, an album that moves fluidly between folk traditions, contemporary composition and cinematic storytelling while holding onto a sense of intimacy throughout.

MORE ABOUT JEAN-MICHEL BLAIS
Montreal-based pianist and composer Jean-Michel Blais is signed to Arts & Crafts and Mercury KX (Decca). Since his first album, il, released in 2016 and named one of the 10 best albums of the year by Time Magazine, his music has reached an international audience and accumulated over 375 million streams.

Trained in performance at the conservatory of music, he developed an intimate and expansive musical language on his own, where the piano engages in dialogue with electronic and orchestral textures. A member of the lgbtq+ community and living with Tourette’s syndrome, he also draws on his experience as a social worker to create profoundly human music, driven by sensitivity and emancipation.

His five albums have received critical acclaim, whether in Pitchfork, The Fader or Le Figaro. On stage, he performs solo, in ensembles or with orchestras, in iconic venues such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam or the Southbank Centre in London, as well as in outdoor concerts, notably in front of more than 40,000 spectators at the Montreal International Jazz festival.

A composer for film and television, he won a Cannes Soundtrack Award for his score for Xavier Dolan's film Matthias & Maxime and composed the music for the Wonderfall at Moment Factory installation in Singapore's Changi airport. His music also appears in the Netflix series The Brothers Sun, advertising campaigns for Tudor and Louis Vuitton and during french figure skater Kévin Aymoz's performance at the Milano-Cortina Olympic Games.

JASPER SLOAN YIP RETURNS FIVE YEARS AFTER THE RELEASE OF HIS LATEST RECORD, STRANGE CALM/BLUSHING AUTUMN

Today, celebrated Vancouver songwriter Jasper Sloan Yip shares his first new music since 2021’s Strange Calm/Blushing Autumn via Tiny Kingdom. Never one to rush the process, it’s been five years since the last release, and a lot has changed.

His last record arrived in the midst of the great upheavals that dominated the early decade. Released quietly into a world of closed venues and parked vans, there was no celebratory show or subsequent tour to mark the event. Like many during those years, Jasper clicked send, closed his laptop and probably rewatched Breaking Bad.

During this ‘down time’, Jasper (mostly) put music aside and instead started a family. Milestones came and went, time accelerated with previously unused gears and Jasper's songwriting began to unpack all of it. Produced by John Raham (Frazey Ford, The New Pornographers), his new single, “love&worry”, was inspired by the mayhem of early parenthood, he says. “The arrival of our son caused life to compress and expand in completely different directions. The shape of our world changed and I had to find new ways of making it all fit. Four years in and I’m still struggling with that. Meanwhile, the maelstrom of the 2020s rages on in the background. This song exists somewhere in between these two extreme places. It’s about navigating this new season of life and the extreme weather that has defined it - joy, overwhelm, apprehension and revelation.”

MORE ABOUT JASPER SLOAN YIP
In the intervening years since Jasper released Strange Calm/Blushing Autumn, his songs have trickled through the ether to reach new audiences. The collection amassed over 2.6 million streams, seeing regular additions to Apple and Spotify coffeehouse playlists, solidifying his place within Vancouver’s musical landscape.

“Gin Fizz” became a fixture on CBC Radio 2, and songs like “Silver Lining” and “Halcyon Dream” found their way into feature film and network television placements. Live appearances were scarce but noteworthy. He shared bills with the Weather Station, Aysanabee, and Haley Blais to name a few, and also toured Japan.

Keep your ear to the ground for more new music from Jasper Sloan Yip in the near future.

Nunavut musician and Aakuluk Music label owner Andrew Morrison, the one-time leader of JUNO Award-nominated Arctic folk-rock group the Jerry Cans, has created a beautiful and often mournful piano record, Last Days. The record is comprised of six instrumentals with each of the same works also recorded with Inuktitut-language poetry by rock legend James Ungalaq (Northern Haze) and JUNO Award-nominated singer-songwriter Terry Uyarak.

“It is a grief album, but a life album,” says Andrew. “There's lots about home. I think that's something that we struggle with, in this era of our lives, when we lose people, parents, but also lose people that we look up to artistically.

“It is a great honour to have both James and Terry contribute poetry to my album; they write absolutely beautiful words,” says Andrew. “We wanted to provide both Inuktitut and English guides to their poems with the hope that more people can understand life in Nunavut.”

Today, he shares the first two tracks from the album, “Colours I (Instrumental)” and “Colours II” featuring Terry Uyarak. “This is the first single off an album in a completely new universe for me,” says Morrison. “As the world seems to get more complicated I think lots of us are searching for a solid foundation to live good days. Thoughts and values that seemed solid/normal all our lives are showing cracks, and just as the old man Leonard Cohen said, ‘that's how the light gets in’. What is that light? This song is a process of searching for it and I am honoured to have my dear friend Terry add words about his own pursuit of that light.”

MORE ABOUT LAST DAYS
Last Days was largely inspired by Andrew’s late mother, who was comforted by her son’s piano instrumentals in her final months, but also his need to break out of his comfort zone and create a piece of art that can be taken to the great classical concert halls of the world.

“I wanted to do something that ignores the rest of the commercialized appetites in the music industry and honour non-lyrical music. It’s a world I don’t know too much about, but I think that we’re told too quickly what songs are about, but with the Inuktitut poetry — because most people won’t understand it — the tone of the voice, I hope, conveys that. This is getting back to something that I feel is missing in art, which is our connection to what we’re feeling and expressing.”

During the pandemic, when Andrew’s mother was in care, every morning he played her snippets of the piano songs because he knew she enjoyed them. “I recorded them on my phone just as voice notes,” he says.

Some of those intros are on the final recording, and some he rerecorded after she passed away.  “It was just time to diarize and remember the last moments of my mother passing away,” Andrew says.

Self-produced in Inuktitut and Montreal, the instrumentals “House Is Home v. 1”, “79th ave v.1”, “The News v. 1, The News 2 v.1 ”, “Colours”, and “Sooth Your Soul”, also feature Sara Page (Barr Brothers) on harp and Kristina Koropecki on cello.

“The News” poems were written and recited by James Ungalaq. “Two of his band members had passed away this year so he was also in a devastated space,” says Andrew. “He had a bunch of poems that he had written. It’s him finding his place again, similar to me, being from a band that had a certain identity to something very different. I feel like for both of us, it's been mining our souls a little bit.”
