Today, Vancouver indie songwriter Drew Tarves, aka young friend, shares the tender new song “Anything Anything” from his forthcoming full-length album, New Entertainment, due out November 6 via Nettwerk. Throughout his career, Tarves has had a penchant for twangy songs about love (see “soft light,” “the real deal,” and “met this girl on the internet”), and on “Anything Anything,” he distills his earnest lyricism and warm arrangements down to a pure declaration of devotion.

Tarves elaborates: “One of the only proper love songs on the record. This one is about commitment. Loving someone so much that you really feel like you could do the impossible if it would make them happy. It’s about showing up for someone, about consistency.”

“Anything Anything” provides a welcome moment of solace on New Entertainment, highlighting young friend’s dynamic range. The album was recorded live off the floor, fully analog, channeling rock albums of the past. It’s a celebration of the slow process and the inevitable mistakes. It’s taking the scenic route every time. It’s running headfirst at life with your eyes wide open, getting your hands dirty, feeling it all. 

Tarves brought the song structures into rehearsals, allowing the band to flesh out arrangements organically – resulting in a tactile sound that nods to classic influences like Wilco and Neil Young. The album was produced by Tarves’ longtime collaborator David Marinelli (FINNEAS, Wallice, spill tab), and the two recently connected for an artist-on-artist interview for Talkhouse.

young friend is excited to bring these songs to life on “The Hard Rock Tour,” which kicks off with a special hometown show in Vancouver on November 4 at The Hollywood Theatre, where fans can get a live glimpse of the new album ahead of its release. ABOUT YOUNG FRIEND
Drew Tarves' music as young friend feels classic and immediate all at once, capturing the nostalgia of post-adolescence while diving deep into a pool of self-reflection. His sophomore album, New Entertainment, is about fear and love in equal measure. An exploration of the ways AI and new technology are infiltrating our lives, but also a celebration of friendship and family, and genuine time spent. Of the slow process, the inevitable mistakes. 

A trained dancer for most of his adolescence, the 26-year-old Vancouver native switched artistic disciplines after spending time jamming with his musician friends. "I found out very quickly that I loved it," he recalls. "It was my favorite thing to do." Armed with a guitar and a laptop, Tarves started hashing out early songwriting attempts in GarageBand as he found his own style: "It was all about experimenting while trying to find what worked for me."

 In 2022, Tarves released his indie-pop debut EP HOW DID WE GET HERE? and quickly followed it up with a sophomore in 2023 titled scaredy cat. 2024 brought in his first Canadian and international touring as well as a JUNO Award nomination. His debut full-length, motorcycle sound effects, was released in 2025. New Entertainment, produced by friend and frequent collaborator David Marinelli (Wallice, Finneas, spill tab), was recorded entirely in the studio, live off the floor. It’s solid, tactile, nostalgic in a way that hits you right in the chest. 

A true rock record, New Entertainment is asking to be played on your old record player or the tape deck of Joni, Drew’s 2001 Mazda pickup.

DANA LEE SHARES TWO NEW SINGLES FROM UPCOMING LP

Dana Lee’s got the perfect recipe for hard-hitting country-folk confessionals. The Nelson B.C. singer-songwriter mashes old-time country and indie rock into gripping, heartfelt reflections on coming apart while trying to get it together. On her latest album Big Time, out October 15, 2026 via Ram On Records, Dana Lee twists these big emotions into authentic reflections and cheeky musings that capture the reckonings of her roarin’ twenties.

Today, she’s sharing two new tracks from the album. “That’s Not Working For Me Today” is a breakup song, a song about the long loneliness that follows when an important person leaves your life,” explains Lee. “My goal with this song was to capture the sentiment of when you have no choice but to let your sadness be sadness. You can’t always shape-shift your feelings. And perhaps that’s the only way to carry them. I adore Ryan Funks’s feature on pedal steel. Kacy Lee Anderson added perfect backup vocals. Liam Duncan added the delicate touch of mellotron. This is my personal favorite on the album.”

“Cry Tears Sad” is the oldest song on the album. “I wrote it close to ten years ago. The original meaning, a reckoning with my chaos capacities, has since evolved into an anthem for rebellion. I’ve played it exclusively acoustically ever since it was born. The creation of this full-band version was rather excruciating for me. I couldn’t imagine the essence of the song, a solo sound-off, making sense in just any soundscape. Liam and Austin Parachoniak came to my rescue with a crisp, driving, electric sound.”

Produced by Liam Duncan (Boy Golden) and Austin Parachoniak (Del Barber, Leith Ross), Big Time is a dirt road country record that draws as much from Big Thief and Wednesday as from John Prine and Gillian Welch. “The vision was for the album to encapsulate all the genres that inspired it,” Dana explains, and she deftly threads the needle of these eclectic inspirations throughout. This sound is informed by Dana’s early musical experiences: playing in an old-timey bluegrass band; participating in break-out jam sessions with her deeply musical extended family; and honing her powerful voice by singing Mennonite hymns in three-part harmony at church.

Big Time jives, sways, and thrashes through Dana Lee’s journey as a “big time lonely small-town girl.” The title track sets the scene, with a teenage Dana looking out into the prairie horizon beyond her hometown of Steinbach, Manitoba, preparing for an abrupt, and permanent, departure. The songs that follow see Lee moving to Winnipeg, capturing “exactly what my twenties were like.” For Dana, this meant chaos, connection, partying, depression, breakups, and redemption—all while immersing herself in the city’s legendary music scene.

 These songs brim with immediacy, as Dana breaks apart while trying to make sense of it all. One minute, she’s making “a damn circus out of my heart,” the next she’s wondering if she’ll get her smile back, or if it’s “gone forever.” Dana’s savoury vocals and timeless lyrics shine on the “A Song About Playing Pool”, which finds her starting to find peace in creating her own daily routines, while “I’m So Down”, a playful track led by fiddle, mandolin, and suitcase percussion, captures self-doubt creeping back in, as she sings: ‘I got so low that I saw heaven / made it back in time for 7 / now I’ve got all night to think about / all the ways I’m missing out’. 

“Cry Tears Sad”, which Dana had written as a mournful solo ballad in her downtown Winnipeg apartment a decade ago, becomes a raucous, electric waltz on Big Time, while the trotting “Leave a Trace” sums it all up heartbreakingly well: ‘Should I find my roots and settle down / or keep on rolling with this train? / Been so good to me some days / but it’s been so hard for me today’.

Big Time sounds like a Winnipeg record not just because it was recorded in that city with some of its finest musicians; the record, and Dana Lee’s work, embody the city’s DIY, grassroots spirit. The songs for Big Time emerged over years of back-and-forth songsharing between Lee and producer Liam Duncan (“What a dream,” Dana ponders, “to have friends who you can process life with through songwriting together”). Dana raised funds for the album by screenprinting and selling t-shirts that read: “I bought this shirt to help Dana Lee make an album. “And they’re strategically designed for crop possibilities” Dana explains, smiling: “if you want to keep it vague, it can just be ‘I bought this shirt to help Dana Lee’, and you can keep me out of it and make it read ‘I bought this shirt’!” Lee also designed the album cover and single artwork for Big Time, and with a history of handmaking CD cases, the DIY approach is imbued across her artistic process.

The closing track on Big Time finds Dana Lee finding peace, entering a new phase of life. “Through all these certainties and uncertainties,” Dana explains, “it’s a song about just being present in the moment, finally making peace with the chaos.” Dana is currently thriving as part of the fringe country scene in Nelson, BC, an outpost of Canada’s rural honkytonk renaissance. “It’s community building through dream-making, with so much excitement, support, and the sense that we’re doing this ourselves.” With the wind at her back and the sun shining her path, Dana Lee is set to keep singing her truth.

Today, Wayfinding, the trio of Cassia Hardy (Wares), Ryan Beattie (Frog Eyes, Himalayan Bear), and Marek Tyler (ASKO, nêhiyawak) are following up their recent single, “Kathleen”, with the new track “Shrapnel”, the second song released from their upcoming album, A Nest of Wrens.

“‘Shrapnel’ is a doomed road trip,” explains Hardy. “Leaving your best friend behind at the gas station. Under blue twilight and sticky sodium freeway lights, thumbing for a ride and imagining if you would stop for yourself or not. Arguing about the answers.”

MORE ABOUT A NEST OF WRENS
The title of the new record refers to a poem by Michael Hartnett which explores the abiding power of our most profound early creative or aesthetic connections; those signal inspirations which tell us, in a language we don’t yet understand, who we want to be and what that might ask of us. We carry these experiences with us as memory, but our memory changes shape along with the other parts of our identity as we proceed towards and through adulthood. Their significance is muted as they take their place as but one of many memories. The creative person remains awake to the truth and importance of those early realizations by seeking out new ways of expressing and building, by reckoning with the present by questioning memory, and filling the parts of themself that time has emptied out with new community and shared purpose.

These things are rendered by the songs on A Nest of Wrens as a whirling, roaring autumn stormcloud of richly textured guitar interplay shot through with startling melodic flashes and flickering synthesizers, supported by a sturdy and heartening rhythm which both establishes a horizon to be moved towards, and promises calm at the centre. The sounds of the welcoming of a new friend, the departure of a sibling, an enduring alliance.

MORE ABOUT WAYFINDING
The alliance between drummer Marek Tyler and principal songwriter and guitarist Ryan Beattie has endured for almost 20 years, not only on and off in Beattie’s Himalayan Bear, but also together as backing for other musicians like The New Pornographers’ Kathryn Calder. 

Wayfinding was conceived as a collaboration between them that would point Beattie’s writing away from the modes he was most comfortable operating in by responding purposefully to Tyler’s direction and to the contributions of Tyler’s bandmate in nêhiyawak, multi-instrumentalist Matthew Cardinal. Cardinal has since departed Wayfinding, but not before Cassia Hardy of Wares was invited in as another writer and instrumentalist. The four of them challenged themselves to approach the materials assembled for A Nest of Wrens from new perspectives in performance and expression, and to actively mine the energy of those early emotions, first felt by young quickening souls for whom everything is new and a source of amazement.

“Playing in Wayfinding requires trust in the process and letting go of the result,” explains Tyler. “It’s like speaking from the heart. Sometimes you didn’t know that you needed to say something until it had been voiced.”
