For Episode 8 of  PonderBeat, our collaboration with Laurie Brown’s Pondercast, Laurie has curated a playlist that helps us to re-centre in the midst of our current world situation, drawing us in, closer to ourselves, to each other, and to things that might often seem otherworldly.

To begin this episode, the acoustic version of Gord Downie’s “Away Is Mine” brings us closer to the beautiful spirit of Gord than ever before. Luka Kuplowsky is not afraid to write about his own inner reflections which may not be entirely flattering all the time in “Do I Have To Be”, and Braids’ “Here 4 U” explores how part of every relationship lives on beyond the break down.

If there’s an activity that nearly everyone can relate to during lock down, it may be doom scrolling, and Steven Wilson’s “King Ghost” pins down that exact uneasiness of nothing. LAL also works to draw us closer to each with “End Of This World Together”, while Yves Jarvis “Emblem” makes you lean into the gentle, lush feeling of green.

Laurie considers Edwin Raphael’s “Mild Sanity” (ft. Juletta) to be a “second wave saviour”, bringing the listener inside themselves as a “half-conscious body high”. And while we’re in our own heads, The Weather Station’s “Robber” is like our own inner-voice confessing to itself.

Charles Spearin and Josefin Runsteen find each other’s rhythm in “Breathing With You, With Me”, while Matthew Cardinal’s “May 7th” find its own self, the one that shows up in the quiet, underneath everything else that’s going on in this weird world.

New to Pondercast, every Monday morning Laurie Brown will post a new 20 minute Guided Meditation. Meant for everyone - no experience necessary. Great way to start meditating, and a great way to find support and encouragement for your practise.

Also new for season 4, every second Friday the Pondercast team are now posting a Grounding Thought. We started these during the intense days of lockdown and we’ve heard from you that they helped. So count on 10 minute podcasts to help shift your perspective when your world threatens to overwhelm.
