“shows the Dubai-born, Montreal-based indie folk songwriter in a delicate light, mixing familiar acoustic melancholy with Eastern-style scales. The music video matches both the spiraling instrumentation of the song and Raphael’s lyrical vision, showing him navigating between two different worlds.” COMPLEX

"Raphael's languid instrumentals are all too easy to melt into." - Exclaim!“Rare it is to find a writer who speaks so candidly about something that is far from straightforward. It’s deep, it’s provocative, and most importantly, it sounds gorgeous.” Indie Shuffle

"Raphael indulges by opening up that affecting guitar-vocal pairing to a lush bridge with added horn, guitar and drums." - CBC Music

"The track seemingly blooms from a spacious and rustic folk sound into something far more lavish." - Under The Radar

"Tranquil melodies flow over electronic and acoustic instrumentation." - American Songwriter

Today, Edwin Raphael returns with a new single that is as wavy as you'd expect for being fully written and produced on a boat. The song leans into his more alternative, indie influences and takes the listener on a metaphorical slow, floaty, boat-ride from start to end.

“Hate It When You See Me Like This”, is about “realising your worth and value intrinsically after someone you care about has seen you in a low moment,” he says. “This song dives deep into that feeling and dominos the unsaid notion that you’re better than this moment allows. It’s about overcoming the fear of not being enough, and in being genuine to yourself that the future is what you manifest.”

MORE ABOUT EDWIN RAPHAEL
Equipped with smooth, chilling lyrics and innate musical capabilities, Ocean Walk, Edwin’s first EP, had been labelled as a “hidden gem with sombre instrumentals and an eerie, yet beautiful listen” by pressrelease.ca quite reminiscent of the beachy and rustic sounds of Ben Howard.

After a coy two years of playing a handful of gigs, 2017 saw Edwin Raphael release his sophomore EP Cold Nights. The EP presented a darker and heavier progression in terms of songwriting and production with heartbreak song “Colder” instantly becoming a low key hit being featured on Spotify playlists such as Indie Pop and Chill, Indie Chillout and Lush + Ethereal.

His much-awaited debut full-length album Will You Think of Me Later? is now racking up more than 9 million streams highlighting Edwin as someone who is on top of his songwriting abilities and one to watch out for in the coming years.

Staring at Ceilings EP, produced with Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, Tim Baker, Stars), stands as a spectrum of human indulgence and the cost of our anxieties. Through this 20-minute voyage of his innate feelings and a ceiling that alludes a mirage, you are brought back to this exact moment; the present.
