CHRIS VELAN ANNOUNCES 'GLOW'

CHRIS VELAN ANNOUNCES GLOW

MONTREAL SONGWRITER TO RELEASE HOWARD BILERMAN-PRODUCED SIXTH ALBUM ON MARCH 4TH VIA NEWSONG RECORDINGS

LISTEN TO GLOW’S FIRST SINGLE “un-AMERICAN GOTHIC” TODAY

Montreal songwriter and producer Chris Velan has made his sixth and latest album a homecoming. Set for release on March 4 via Newsong Recordings, Glow is the first album made in his hometown since 2005. “After ten years recording and lots of touring, I just hit a wall and ran out of energy and inspiration,” says Velan. “I decided to stay put in Montreal for a while, try producing other artists and become part of the community again.”

Co-produced with Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Basia Bulat, Wolf Parade, Vic Chestnutt) Velan was joined in studio by an all-star band of local musicians; Jamie Thompson (Islands, The Unicorns) sitting at the drums, Morgan Moore (Barr Brothers, Blood and Glass) on bass, Max Henry (Suuns) playing keys, with Ariel Engle (AroarA) and Ngabo Kiroko (Dear Denizen) providing backup vocals.

Glow is the most accomplished, seamless mingling of Velan’s musical predilections - dancing from quiet, intimate passages, growing on pulse smooth rhythms. It’s a DNA that draws from his singer-songwriter craft as much as from West African guitar pop, vintage-era rock steady, and dance-floor eighties rock. The latter of which is embodied by the first single, “un-American Gothic”.

“This was one of the first songs I wrote for this album and it's one of my favourites,” claims Velan. “All of these strong pangs of personal accountability I was experiencing in my own life funneled into this first-person account of a failing empire and took shape in this upbeat, dance-floor vibe. I think that's because it was meant to be more of a celebration than a lament. Once you pass through the pain of losing a myth or illusion, you can get to something better and more true.”

The songs on Glow want to pull back the curtain and let the light in. They’re about taking that long, unflinching look in the mirror, shattering mythologies, both personal and collective, and naming the lies that keep us caged. Whether refusing the clean-up job of a prophet in “Listen, Elijah”, or invoking grace in “Call Me Into Your Heart”, Velan’s latest collection of songs seems intent on finding joy at the end of the world - where no matter how frightening the outcome, the end is never the end, just a great new beginning.

“With the first couple of songs that I wrote for this album, it seemed that I was creating a sort of rock opera about the end of the world. But as more songs came and I started to burrow down into what they meant, I realized they were all getting at different notions of an apocalypse – not in the end-of-times sense but in the everyday revealing of what’s been hidden. That’s when the album went from conceptual to personal for me.”

It’s a path of inquiry that began for Velan on his previous album, The Long Goodbye, a raw and confessional reckoning with the break-up of a long-term relationship. While echoes of that ache remain in his latest release, Velan’s writing now looks forward with a faith in the blossoming power of love, connection, and the other intangibles that sustain life and will.

In addition to writing and recording Glow, Velan has kept busy in the studio with numerous other projects. Over the course of the last year he produced a debut album for Vermont chanteuse Francesca Blanchard, traveled to Haiti to record the Haitian collective Lakou Mizik’s first release, and joined Montreal afro-rock outfit Dear Denizen on guitar.

FEDERAL LIGHTS ANNOUNCES TOUR DATES, RELEASES NEW VIDEO “AMELIA”

FEDERAL LIGHTS ANNOUNCES TOUR DATES, RELEASES NEW VIDEO “AMELIA”

NEW LP, COEUR DE LION, SET FOR RELEASE IN CANADA ON JANUARY 29 VIA APORIA RECORDS

WINNIPEG BAND BEGINS CANADIAN TOUR ON FEBRUARY 26
MORE DATES TBA

WATCH THE LIVE VIDEO FOR “AMELIA” HERE

After a successful tour throughout Germany last year, Federal Lights is ready to hit the road in Canada beginning February 26. To get a glimpse of the Winnipeg five-piece in person, fans can watch them perform “Amelia” from their upcoming album Coeur de Lion live in studio. Full tour dates can be found below, with more dates to be announced shortly.

Set for release on January 29 via Aporia Records, Coeur de Lion finds a sense of beauty by examining the gravity of everyday moments. A song might be about riding transit and overhearing a kid say something obvious that feels profound; it might be about experiencing the harder edges of city life and the emotional toll that can take. What ties their songs together is hope – in even the most haunting songs there’s a morsel of it. “I find it uplifting that there’s some hope in the saddest of situations,” says frontman Jean-Guy Roy.

Produced by Rusty Matyas (Imaginary Cities, Sheepdogs), Coeur de Lion travels through points of pressure, regret, solace, anticipation, and disquiet, without ever losing sight. The album follows up We Were Found In The Fog, which won the Western Canadian Music Award for Aboriginal Recording Of The Year.

Ra Ra Riot has revealed “Absolutely", a new track off their forthcoming album, Need Your Light. The band shared the song - which Stereogum labeled "ebullient" and Consequence of Sound called "a synth pop whirlwind of a new single" on January 1 via a "New Year's Resolutions" playlist on Spotify.  Ryan Hadlock (Vance Joy, Lumineers, Blonde Redhead) produced the track at Bear Creek Studios in Seattle, WA where the band recorded their debut album, The Rhumb Line.

Ra Ra Riot previously released the single “Water", a collaboration with Vampire Weekend's Rostam that continues to capture the attention of fans and media alike. It was recently playlisted in the pages of Rolling Stone and added on The Current and at Alt Nation. Radio highlights also include 40 plays per week on Sirius XMU, spins on World Cafe (syndicated to 200 stations), and day-of-release plays on Beats 1, KCRW, KEXP, KCMP, KEXP, Sirius XMU, WAPS, WFPK and WXPN. The single has charted on Spotify's Viral Chart and was quickly picked up by many press outlets including NME, which named it one of its Best New Tracks.

The video for "Water" was conceived by Rostam, who co-directed it with Josh Goleman (Alabama Shakes, Skrillex, Gary Clark Jr).

Need Your Light was primarily produced by Ryan Hadlock (Vance Joy, Blonde Redhead) with two tracks, "I Need Your Light" and "Water," produced by Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend, Charli XCX, Carly Rae Jepsen).  It is the fourth full-length from Brooklyn's Ra Ra Riot and sees the band -- Wes Miles (vocals), Mathieu Santos (bass), Milo Bonacci (guitar), Rebecca Zeller (violin), and Kenny Bernard(drums) -- getting back to their house party roots without abandoning the more heady soundscapes they explored with 2013's Beta Love. The result is an album that's celebratory without being saccharine and that sees the group collectively mining their prior experiences in order to craft something that looks toward the future with an optimistic gaze.

Ra Ra Riot’s first tour in support of Need Your Light kicks off on March 2 in Albany, NY and includes stops in Vancouver on March 31, Toronto on April 14 and Montreal on April 15.  The full tour is listed below and tickets for all dates are available now.
