Between the trio of Chris Murphy (Sloan), Matt Murphy (Super Friendz, Flashing Lights), and Mike O’Neill (Inbred), the ‘supergroup’ has spent their fair share of time on the road. During their recent travels, Chris shot a lot of ‘on the road’ footage on his phone, a good chunk of it featured Matt all by himself, empty airports, and donuts. “We all laughed pretty hard when we paired Matt’s lonely traveller shots with our melancholic song, ‘I Can’t Wait Forever’ so we decided to make that the track,” says Chris. “We were going to just run a snippet or two on our Instagram, but there was enough footage to cover the entire song.”

Premiering today courtesy of Exclaim!, the video for “I Can’t Wait Forever” follows Matt, the lonely traveller, until he meets Mike, a fellow lonely traveller, and finally (spoiler alert), they meet a fellow donut eater, Chris.

TUNS is an exciting new band of equals, of collaborators, of experienced veterans who sound as exuberant as ever. It’s like a music geek’s version of fantasy baseball, a band that could feature Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend, and the Attractions’ Pete Thomas, with Alex Chilton and The Jam’s Paul Weller throwing in song ideas.

Out now on Royal Mountain Records, their debut self-titled album is full of power pop with intricate melodies and electrifying rock’n’roll written with a deep appreciation for songcraft. The first single, “Mind Over Matter”, grabbed a lot of ears and hit #1 on both CBC Radio 2 and Radio 3.

THE HARPOONIST & THE AXE MURDERER ANNOUNCE UPCOMING ALBUM

JUNO NOMINATED BC DUO TO RELEASE APOCALIPSTICK MARCH 24

CANADIAN TOUR DATES BEGIN FEBRUARY 16

There once was an era when records were made in castles, abandoned airplane hangars, barns, or on a yacht off the coast of the Bahamas, its passengers as high as paper kites. Apocalipstick is not that record! Due out March 24, Shawn ‘The Harpoonist’ Hall and Matt ‘The Axe Murderer’ Rogers’ new album came together from the desire for companionship, the endless pursuit of tone, the strength and glue of family, and above all, the love and admiration for each other's skills. Whether it was operating a tape machine with Jedi precision, creating meals that fuelled us, or belting out glass shattering ‘ohs’ and ‘ahs’, it was the elbow grease of many individuals that brought this project to life.

Today, the pair are sharing the first single from Apocalipstick, “Get Ready”, which contrasts soul-drenched singers and a bouncy groove with words of warning for our uncertain times. “Matt's brother Ben Rogers first sang ‘Get Ready’ to us by the piano in the basement of my home,” says Hall. “It was instantly familiar to us and embodied this loose campfire like group vocal thing which carried right into the sessions with the girls. I think the beauty of this song is the impression of hopefulness it leaves you with while layered in a bed of chaos.”

These days it feels like our world is on the verge of collapse. But it’s with near-end times in the breeze that we plunge deeper into the pleasures of sex, revelry and entertainment. Apocalipstick begins with the doom-laden warning call of “Get Ready”, and continues to question the fate of the world, delving into lustful begging with “Pretty Please”, summoning complete heartbreak in “Treat Me Kind”, while “Nancy” and “Forever Fool” touch on themes of bullying and revenge.

Framed by psychedelic landscapes and world-ending jam-outs, The Harpoonist & the Axe Murderer ignite the gritty, blues-rock grooves they have been recognized for by adding drummer John Raham (The Be Good Tanyas) and keyboardist Geoff Hilhorst (The Deep Dark Woods) into the melting pot as well as the golden sounds of Dawn Pemberton, Andrina Turenne, Alexa Dirks (Begonia), Ben Rogers, Khari Wendell, Erik Nielsen, and Ricardo Khayatte. Add equal parts soulful, sweaty vocals, and biting nasty guitar and you have an album perfect for any doomsday date-night.

Beginning February 16, The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer will take Apocalipstick on the road this Spring through a string of tour dates across Canada with Monkey Junk, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Ryan McNally, and Leeroy Stagger. Full tour dates can be found below.

Hall and Rogers have received considerable recognition in the last few years. Their previous album, A Real Fine Mess, was nominated for a JUNO Award as Blues Album Of The Year, Video of the Year and Best Blues Album at the Western Canadian Music Awards, and the duo were also nominated for four Maple Blues Awards and won 'Blues Act of the Year' at the SiriusXM Indies in 2013. They’ve also had songs featured on television shows such as the 'The Good Wife', 'Blue Bloods', and the aptly named TV movie 'Lizzie Borden Took An Axe'.

JERRY LEGER ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM

NONSENSE AND HEARTACHE ‘DOUBLE-ALBUM’ DUE OUT MARCH 31 VIA LATENT RECORDINGS

LISTEN TO AND SHARE THE FIRST SINGLE “THE BIG SMOKE BLUES” HERE

CANADIAN TOUR DATES BEGIN APRIL 5

Jerry Leger’s upcoming album, Nonsense And Heartache is equal parts primal rock and roll, and raw, confessional balladry. The separation between the two is evident by the album’s title, and it is in fact two distinct collections of songs presented on two slabs of vinyl. In many ways, Jerry Leger’s artistic path has been leading up to this ambitious display of both sides of his musical personality, fueled by countless nights playing in clubs and bars with a loyal band equally committed to keeping rock and roll’s original flame burning.

Due out March 31 via Latent Recordings, the first single from Nonsense And Heartache, “The Big Smoke Blues” is “basically about trying to find your place and survive in the big city while maintaining your integrity and a roof over your head,” says Leger.

Employing his distinctive live-off-the-floor recording approach on Nonsense And Heartache, producer Michael Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) focused on capturing the chemistry between Leger and his core musicians: multi-instrumentalist James McKie, bassist Dan Mock, and drummer Kyle Sullivan, along with guest vocalist Angie Hilts. The ragged-but-right results perfectly complement Leger’s tales of characters on the fringe, attempting to unravel life’s mysteries.

Leger describes the album himself by saying, “Mike came up with the idea of doing a double album, but it’s really two different records – Nonsense and Heartache – packaged into one. He had the idea to record one album as electric, bluesy, dirty rock and roll, with James and I on electric guitars, Dan on electric bass and Kyle bashing away. The other album was intended to be more of a singer/songwriter record with me on acoustic guitar or piano, James on fiddle or lap steel, Dan on upright and Kyle using brushes and percussion. So, it’s not an ego trip for either of us. It just felt like it made more sense to put them together, plus the fact that neither is overly long, just about 35 minutes each.”

The relationship between Leger and Timmins also works so well because, as songwriters, each shares a fondness for arcane Americana. There is plenty of rich detail in tracks like “Another Dead Radio Star” and “Pawn Shop Piano” that, depending on your perspective, could evoke either the past or present. The former references the famous Orson Welles-voiced character The Shadow, which Leger found to be an ideal metaphor. “That image kind of runs through the whole song as a way of describing what we’ve lost, but at the same time never completely goes away,” he says.

“‘Pawn Shop Piano’ I think describes how I live my life in some ways – the antique and junk shops, the day-to-day living, the debts. It also has a couple references I had written down from years earlier when I toured the U.S. for the first time. We found a cheap motel in the middle of the night somewhere in West Virginia called the Travel Lite, which was a scary joint. And in Johnson City, Tennessee we stumbled upon a pawn shop called Diamonds & Guns that had a really cool hand-painted sign. Things like that often stick with me until I find a home for them.”
