It's been just over four years since Absolutely Free released their self-titled debut LP, an album of "prog pop mini-suites" (Pitchfork) that garnered comparisons to Caribou, Tame Impala, and Broadcast from outlets like Pitchfork, Noisey, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, was long-listed for the 2015 Polaris Music Prize, and saw the band tour extensively with artists like Preoccupations and Alvvays. Composed of Moshe Fisher-Rozenberg, Michael Claxton, and Matt King - three musicians with varied, multi-disciplinary backgrounds in music, film and visual arts, and a long history together – Absolutely Free has been engaged in a broad collection of projects since their debut, but have not released new original band material since 2014.

Today, Absolutely Free are breaking into motion with the release of "Still Life", a new single that serves as a prelude to a busy 2019. Produced by Jorge Elbrecht (Ariel Pink, Japanese Breakfast, Wild Nothing) and mastered by Heba Kadry (Björk, Slowdive, Beach House), "Still Life" elevates the band's masterful attention to sonic detail with an emotional urgency befitting these times – and raises anticipation for a sophomore album in the new year.

With an accompanying video directed by Edmonton artist Christina Battle, “Still Life” provides a tantalizing glimpse of Absolutely Free's evolution, introducing layered electronic textures to the band's adventurous art rock. Stereogum premiered the video today, which features images of growth and erosion, nature and industry in quick, opposing succession.

In the band’s words:

"'Still Life' starts in a familiar universe and bubbles up into another. The shift illustrates an appetite for personal, political and stylistic change, boiling over. The song examines feelings of being worn down and halted by progress, stagnating both in society and individually. It is about breaking free from patterns of still life defined by cyclical, repeated forms of inaction, and predictable modes of conformity.

"We collaborated with Christina Battle on the video. Her series of animated gifs, the world is a distorted landscape, brings a wider perspective to our song. Today’s news can debilitate you. Christina’s unrelenting juxtaposition of rusted objects, fossils, and natural disasters makes individual problems seem insignificant in the face of millions of years and forces greater than humanity. That perspective can help assess what we can do as individuals to steer the ship to a better place."

“Still Life" will be available on all streaming platforms November 15th. Stream or purchase “Still Life” here.

On Decemberly, Oh Susanna teams up with pianist and songwriter Michael Johnston to perform new and classic holiday songs. Inspired by the Christmas parties Michael and his partner Annie host each year where friends gather around the piano to sing, Oh Susanna and Michael decided to record a mini album of songs with just piano and vocals. This collection of songs and the intimacy of the recording pays homage to albums and artists such as A Charlie Brown Christmas by the Vince Guaraldi Trio, A Very She & Him Christmas, and Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong’s fun interplay.

“Every year I look forward to getting out the Christmas music from the 40s, 50s and 60s,” says Suzie Ungerleider (Oh Susanna). “One January, I didn’t want to stop listening to all this good music and decided to write a song called ‘After the Holidays’ inspired by all those great Jazz and Pop crooners. I recruited my dear friend, pianist and songwriter Michael Johnston to write the lyrics with me…full of double entendres and flirtation – I even made up a word ‘Decemberly’ to describe the magical feeling of the holiday time. This year I decided it was time for me and Michael to record a mini album of holiday songs including our original ‘After the Holidays’.”

In the past year, Reuben and the Dark have taken their new record, Arms of a Dream, throughout the US and Canada including stops at Field Trip Festival, Interstellar Rodeo, and Calgary Folk Festival. The band is just about to put the wraps on a successful run of Fall tour dates throughout Canada before heading to Ireland later this year with Hermitage Green. Already the band is looking ahead to its next trip across Canada beginning in February 2019. Full tour dates can be found below.

Out now via Arts & Crafts, Arms of a Dream finds songwriter/vocalist Reuben Bullock working outside his comfort zone, both musically and lyrically. The result is Bullock’s most vivid and transformative music to date: an intimate exploration of the inversion of imagination and reality in dreams. Exclaim! called the LP “compelling and evocative from start to finish”, while The Calgary Herald claimed that “It’s not hard to envision the songs on Arms of a Dream filling a stadium.”
