A concert event like no other, The Longest Road Show celebrates the amazing talents that arise from the endless miles of touring, and a journey of discovery for performers and audience alike. Spotlighting a killer lineup of road-tested musical artists — a bill co-headlined by Terra Lightfoot, Lindi Ortega, and Begonia — The Longest Road Show will wind its way through major markets across Ontario in February 2019. Tickets go on sale as of 10am Friday November 23. Full tour dates can be found below.

Each night on The Longest Road Show will feature these stellar artists performing in a showcase format. ABOUT TERRA LIGHTFOOT
Terra Lightfoot is a ferocious talent. Shot through with the guitarist-vocalist’s powerful, bluesy soul, vivid lyrics and six-string virtuosity, her latest full-length, New Mistakes, has thrilled audiences and earned critical praise from around the globe, including the likes of No Depression, Pop Matters, Guitar Player, Twangville, The Boot and CBC Music. Lightfoot released her self-titled debut album in 2011; its critically acclaimed follow-up, 2015’s Every Time My Mind Runs Wild, marked the artist’s arrival as a striking songwriter and compelling live performer. 2017 brought two new albums: the orchestral collaboration Live in Concert and her third studio album, New Mistakes – the latter nominated for Adult Alternative Album of the Year at the 2018 JUNO Awards and long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize.

ABOUT LINDI ORTEGA

Lindi Ortega gives fair warning: “Don’t come any closer to my heart /If you’re afraid of the dark.” However, that shroud is slowly lifted in Liberty. As the narrative unfolds in this concept album, a central character emerges – one who finally sheds the darkness of her past and emerges into the light. The melodies and arrangements of Liberty draw on the epic work of Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone, who became one of Ortega’s musical obsessions during the writing and recording of Liberty. During the sessions at Battle Tapes studio in East Nashville, Ortega and producer Skylar Wilson (Justin Townes Earle, Rayland Baxter) scaled back the boot-stomping, throwback country approach that she’s known for, instead polishing a set of music that reflects her Mexican-Irish lineage. It is fitting that NPR’s All Things Considered has described Ortega as “genre-defying in both her music and her personal style.”

ABOUT BEGONIA
Begonia’s Alexa Dirks has never been able to fit into the box of being a "conventional woman". “I’m loud, I’m awkward and I’ve always taken up space. I've done things my whole life that some people would tell me weren't appropriate 'for a girl'.” That narrative that once tore Dirks down is now what empowers her to take charge of her own story, in her own way. Winnipeg-based Dirks is a Juno Award winner with her former group Chic Gamine. While she thrived off of the collaboration, once the band broke up she knew she was ready to go solo. As Begonia, Dirks is bold, brazen with her florid, surprising pop that is tempered with sensitivity and wisdom. Her 2017 debut EP, Lady in Mind, was listed on NPR’s 10 Artists You Need to Know and the track “Juniper” reached #1 on the CBC Music Charts. Dirks’ intimate lyrics and audacious pop style sound allows for her audience to relate to the messiness of life with an honesty that is refreshing.

nêhiyawak hails from amiskwaciy in Treaty 6 Territory. The trio of Indigenous Canadian artists – Kris Harper (vocals, guitars), Marek Tyler (drums), and Matthew Cardinal (synths, bass) – transcends a new intersection of contemporary sound and the traditional storytelling of their ancestry. Their music is a resonant expression of indigeneity in the modern world.

Today, they are sharing the title track from their upcoming starlight EP, due out November 27 via Arts & Crafts. Set to a hypnotic crow hop rhythm, “starlight” is encircled by captivating ambience: the pulse of synths, strands of distorted guitar, and a vocal performance by Harper that flows over with beauty and devastation:

then i wish i had some kind of memory
of a past so quickly changed
the people that no one could see

Of the upcoming collection of songs and its title track, Harper says:

starlight shines a torch into the shadows of colonial ideologies. What is erasure? How is it manifest in society? What are the depths man will go to to hush the perspective of others? When tools of erasure are put to use on aspects of particular cultures, they are also applied to society as a whole. What are the symptoms and affects of these attempts at extinguishing culture? Recognition of the forms and techniques that impact indigenous, POC, LGBTQ, and our mothers, sisters, and daughters assist in the reformation and reparations sought by survivors in our day. The education of this is nêhiyawak's endurance on starlight.”

nêhiyawak has chosen important dates in the creation of the sovereign nation referred to as Canada to release music from the starlight collection. These dates were also important to the fragmentation of indigenous nationhood of which the effects are still felt today. Today, November 16 marks the date Louis Riel was hung in 1885 after confederation.

starlight EP is a collection of five songs that reflect the vast range of a band emboldened with the powerful inflection of its rich cultural connection. Produced by Colin Stewart (The New Pornographers, Black Mountain, Destroyer), nêhiyawak’s music is personified by chiming guitar, terrestrial rhythm, sheer ambience, and resilient poetry. starlight is at times grand and emotional, at times cool and reticent, combining the tense post-rock of Mission of Burma and Godspeed You! Black Emperor with the baroque pop backdrop of Grizzly Bear and Blonde Redhead.
