Today, Wintersleep are sharing the video for their new track “Free Fall”. Released digitally alongside “Fading Out” earlier this month - the songs having originally been an exclusive 7" for Record Store Day - the “Free Fall” video lands just as the band get their EU / UK tour underway. “Free Fall” again sees the band link up with award-winning film-maker Christopher Mills - creator of their astonishing animated video for “Forest Fire” - who offered the following thoughts on project:

"For me, this song is the sound of the wind if you're in a forever fall through a bright and colourful sky. If you were falling into infinity, it seems likely that, at some point, the world around you would become abstract, and you might imagine people falling around you, or the shapes of their bodies absorbed into clouds that would then shift and evaporate into even more abstract shapes.

The urgency of this music, romantically embracing what could be our last epic journey of a plastic-congested spin around the earth was something I wanted to turn into a bright and flashing dance video you could put up on your video projector with your friends. The construction of this idea and world is a bit like taking an old spinning rolodex, and adding layers upon layers of clouds, atmosphere, and people. Free Fall wanted to feel like a sort of cuckoo clock like installation that could sit on your desktop, for you to get lost in. Static paintings find their movement through spinning layers, and data-moshing. The video ends with a sombre reflection of the last fall from grace into a plastic polluted, dystopian sea, no less beautiful because of its floating forms, and endless blue colours."

“Free Fall” and “Fading Out” mark the latest in a particularly fruitful release period for the band, having earlier this year put out their seventh full-length album In The Land Of – a long-listed album for the Polaris Music Prize. Last week, the band received a further three Music Nova Scotia nominations, for Alternative Recording, Group Recording and Best Video for “Forest Fire”. They also contributed a track, “The Twist”, to the recent Tiny Changes - A Celebration of The Midnight Organ Fight (Atlantic Records) release, a tribute to the late Frightened Rabbit singer Scott Hutchison, to whom the band had become close co-conspirators.

Like all Wintersleep records, In the Land Of encourages thought and introspection. The new record’s title is an incomplete thought, a blank that is filled in across the record with different places, words, and sounds. “Free Fall” and “Fading Out” mark themselves out as outstanding additions to the band’s canon – proud extensions to the album - all thoughtful anthemia and rousing, sky-high melodies.

The band says of them, "These are both songs we’re incredibly proud of recording and sharing with you. ‘Free Fall’ is a really exciting song for us. It taps into our love of progressive rock songwriting. We kept it off In the Land Of because it has such a strong identity on its own. ‘Fading Out’ is a sort of bridge from Great Detachment to In the Land Of era of songs, completed a bit too late to be included with Great Detachment but one of the first tracks we worked on when we started getting ready for In the Land Of. It’s interesting as it sort of gave In the Land Of a direction but ended up being a bit of an outlier. It has this neat guitar line that somehow ties in sonically with ‘Free Fall’ and feels like a really good accompanying track. Both songs centre around the idea of dissolution. ‘Fading Out’ starts as a sort of conversation about a dissolving relationship. ‘Free Fall’ around the idea of coming to terms with the death of a loved one, how to continue living with someone after they have passed, taking the relationship forward into the future."

Today, acclaimed songwriter and guitarist Sam Weber is pleased to announce his new LP, Everything Comes True, due out October 25 via Sonic Unyon. The album’s first single, “It’s All Happening” was inspired by an inside joke between Weber and Terra Lightfoot, who will be touring across Canada together this fall. Full tour dates can be found below.

“‘It’s all happening’ is a mantra Terra and I started saying to each other all the time as a joke,” says Weber. “It sort of means everything, all of it, is unfolding as it should. The lyrics in the song refer to the narrator persevering in the face of adversity and accepting that everything is it motion and happening as it should.”

Emerging from the bright, wide skies of Canada's west coast, Sam Weber has spent the last decade variously honing his craft as a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer - a road that crests a scenic new mountain with the arrival of his stunning new album, Everything Comes True. Expanding on the ambitious canvas of his recent New Agile Freedom EP, Weber has delivered his most compelling release to date, one stacked with remarkable songs filled out by a remarkable range of talents whose gifts complement the artist's own considerable strengths.

"This collection of songs is the most personal I've put my name on, but this project feels like my least independent,” says Weber. "In crucial moments, the people I collaborated on this saw my truth clearer than I did." He reserves special thanks for L.A. producer Tyler Chester, who cared for the songs as if they were his own, remaining intensely mindful of the album's finer details as well as the fullness of its scope, despite a tight session window. “Much of this record was done in a short period of time," Weber admits. “I'll spend the rest of my life trying to understand how deeply he shaped these performances without touching them."

Industry insiders know Chester not just for his diverse production credits but also his work as a steady session hand on albums and tours by Joan Baez, Jackson Browne, Andrew Bird, Amy Helm, Hayes Carll, Christina Aguilera, and many others. Those heady connections are in addition to the album's heavyweight cast of session players, a lineup that included Dylan Day (Jenny Lewis), pedal steel player Rich Hinman (St. Vincent, Sara Bareilles, Rosanne Cash, Marc Cohn, Cyndi Lauper), guitarist-vocalist Adam Levy (Norah Jones, Tracy Chapman, Ani DiFranco, Allen Toussaint), bassist Bob Glaub (John Lennon, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, CSNY, John Fogerty, Leonard Cohen), percussionist Justin Stanley (Prince, Beck, Leonard Cohen, Paul McCartney, Mark Ronson, Robbie Robertson, Willie Nelson), trombonist Elizabeth Lea (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Dirty Projectors, Vampire Weekend), and trumpet player Todd Simon (Solange, Kelis, Antibalas, Kamasi Washington, Ziggy Marley, TV on the Radio). The album's stellar roster of personnel also includes Grammy Award winning mastering engineer Gavin Lurssen, and of course Weber's long-time drummer and collaborator Marshall Wildman.

For all that star power, Weber found magic in unexpected places. Weber describes the album's title track, written at home on his parents‘ piano, as being something of a snapshot of his past, present and future. “I expect things will happen and I see them come to fruition in unexpected ways,” he says. “I’m trying to say that good things and bad things will happen, but not because they’re good or bad, but because they’re true; and the truth always comes out in the end. No matter how tragic or joyous.”

That gently philosophical bent shows up throughout the album, reflected in lyrics that offer hard-earned wisdom as well as cinematic windows into lives, loves, and relationships unwound or made more profound by circumstance and the pull of the road. At once dreamlike and diaristic, the songs reflect Weber's own journey, both personal and professional. As a moment in time and a statement of purpose, Everything Comes True captures an artist speaking with uncommon clarity and unfaltering dedication to his craft.

A perceptive and compelling singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in the vein of Jackson Browne, The Band, The Wood Brothers and Gillian Welch, Weber has been touring independently and internationally with his band since 2013 — the year after he scored a glowing profile in Guitar Player magazine. Years spent refining songs at home in North Saanich, BC, working in studios in Los Angeles, CA and gigging relentlessly across Canada and throughout the Western U.S. have honed Weber’s craft to a fine point. That journey might have reached a remarkable new place, but to hear Weber tell it, it's never really over.

“Love Is Gonna Find You” Single Art Work

Micah Erenberg_Love Is Gonna Find You (Single) (1).jpg

With only a few short weeks remaining until the release of Micah Erenberg’s new LP, Love Is Gonna Find You, the Manitoba based songwriter is sharing the video for the title track. Shot during one of the coldest weeks in the middle of the winter on Lake Winnipeg, two things were needed for the video: a new parka for director Colin Medley and an old piano. The piano in the middle of the lake caused a bit of a stir among the local ice fishing Facebook groups

"Micah and I shot this video twice, once at sunset, and the following day at sunrise,” says Medley. “It was blisteringly cold. In between the two shoots, some ice fishers found the piano and it caused quite the buzz on some local Facebook groups, with a lot of speculation as to how it ended up in the middle of a frozen lake. Hopefully now that the video is out, the unsolved mystery of the piano on the lake will finally be put to rest.”

“It was really funny to witness the absolute mayhem of the Manitoba Ice Fishers Facebook group,” says Erenberg. “As the rumours of the mysterious piano began to circulate… ‘I heard they were making a movie’... ‘I heard they’re planning on blowing it up on Wednesday’... etc, etc. It was amazing how many people were concerned about the waste from the piano, despite the lack of concern for so many people leaving trash behind at their fishing sites, or even dumping trash right into their fishing holes. Of course, we cleaned up the piano completely. It is now slowly being disassembled for its new life as garden ornamentation. Let this be a reminder to all: Our lakes are a valuable and fragile resource. Please don’t litter our waterways.”

Due out October 4 via Sleepless Records, Love Is Gonna Find You is the songwriter’s highly anticipated second album. The LP finds Erenberg lifting his listeners into a sphere of delicate fulfillment, painting loneliness as a universal craving for human connection over his narratives of getting sober, rain soaked mornings and searching for something bigger than ourselves.

Growing up in the very rural Manitoba, Erenberg gravitated towards music as a curious endeavour around the age of 9 when he first picked up a guitar. That soon turned into writing and recording and inevitably, tours followed and numerous band projects continued until, at the age of 20, he set out to do his own thing. Going it alone has allowed him to express an overlying message of love and positivity through his work and it’s on Love Is Gonna Find You that Erenberg has truly found his groove.

Lyrically, the album paints a scrambling collage of navigating the loss of love while also providing a rolling, self-effacing pep talk. With love, comes pain and Erenberg’s commentary on both simultaneously elevates the textures throughout. It’s a kaleidoscope of memories, merged together to push Erenberg out of the funk he’s found himself in to produce something ultimately positive and downright life-affirming. As he points out on opener, “Do It For Love”, live for the minute you came to this Earth and the minute you’ll leave, no matter how long those nights can feel.

Produced and recorded with Alexandre Bonenfant, the album was crafted in several studios between Toronto, Winnipeg, and Micah’s home town. Switching up the environments has manifested itself as a mirage of characters, ones that teeter on the soft focus of an acoustic guitar while others erupt into strange electronic soundscapes. There’s woozy harmonies, low croons and fervent choruses. Erenberg may revel in the gloom for a moment but it’s soon dispersed as the laugh of a friend echoes in between songs. It’s raw, it’s real and it’s full of heart.
