For the tenth episode of Killbeat’s collaboration with Laurie Brown’s Pondercast, titled PonderBeat, Laurie begins with two tracks that tackle the expanse, both upwards and down. Absolutely Free’s “How To Paint Clouds” takes us into the beyond with that big sky feeling while Astral Swans’ “Spiral” notes that at the bottom of a spiral, there’s just more spiral - no easy way out.

Laurie has also selected two story telling songwriters who she feels can both “nail a moment or a feeling...usually one we’d rather stay silent about”. Andy Shauf’s “Jaywalker” and Charlotte Cornfield’s “Drunk For You” both tackle our warm, fuzzy, confusing, and sometimes hurtful inner dialog during those moments.

Both Jasper Sloan Yip’s “Strange Calm” and Homeshakes “Passenger Seat” float happily between a place of uncertainty and knowing - a place where you might be just along for the ride, somehow trapped and liberated at the same time.

In Charles Spearin’s “My City Of Starlings” we are taken along on a walk through the city in two movements, one at sidewalk level and the other on another plane, while KDAP’s (Kevin Drew A Picture) “Wilner’s Parade” was written while walking in the countryside, with the spirits for company.

Closing out this episode, Ouri’s “Ossature” explores that ‘feeling in our bones’ and Cots’ “Last Sip” creates another world apart, one that’s right beside your ear, inviting you in.

FORTHCOMING ALBUM, LIVE SLOW DIE WISE, OUT JANUARY 19, 2022

Geoffroy (pronounced : Jeff-wah) is an essential emerging voice in Canadian music. Following two LPs that solidified him as one of Quebec’s most promising artists, Geoffroy now prepares to take the next step in his career with the self-release of third full length, Live Slow Die Wise, out January 19, 2022..

Last month, Geoffroy shared the new single, “Strangers On A Train”, a mysterious and romantic journey through the artist’s consciousness. "I wrote the lyrics to ‘Strangers On A Train’ in winter, in my apartment during lockdown,” says Geoffroy. “It’s definitely one of the most introspective songs on the album. I guess it’s a very mature version of myself who wrote this, hah. It’s about accepting and coming to terms with the fact that a relationship has come to its end. It’s about moving on, letting go, and feeling okay about it."

Today, he shares the new video for the single, directed by Alex Dozois. "Alex and I wanted to use this footage she had captured on different road trips we took across the province of Quebec during the pandemic,” says Geoffroy. “We wanted to make a video that felt like or mimicked a dream. Something that remained vague, moody, unattainable and which reflected the introspective aspect of the song. We wanted to focus on the visuals rather than the narrative, and keep it at a slower pace. Alex is a very talented photographer with a unique esthetic, which I wanted to put forward in this video. That's why each shot almost feels like a photograph.”

MORE ABOUT LIVE SLOW DIE WISE

The journey to the LP’s 2022 release began with the unveiling of “Cold World”, an intimate and reflective song that beautifully represents the album’s tone. “Live Slow Die Wise is the timeless story of societal individualism and ego,” Geoffroy shares. “We’re driven by an endless pursuit for growth, innovation and profit. But at what cost?” Live Slow Die Wise still features the personal and reflective touch Geoffroy fans know to expect, but this time through the lens tinted by experience. Inspired by artists like Ry Cooder, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, and thinkers such as Alan Watts, Eckhart Tolle, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, Geoffroy brought a more contemplative and philosophical approach to the album’s songwriting than in previous works.

Live Slow Die Wise was penned during isolation in 2020, and brought to life in the studio with help from legendary French Canadian producer Louis-Jean Cormier. The songs mark a return to Geoffroy’s early days as an artist, travelling the world and playing solo on the streets as he went. A renewed appreciation for organic instrumentation and a recording process that favoured live takes in the studio added depth and authenticity to the songs and hopefully, forge a deep and intimate connection with the listener.

Live Slow Die Wise represents a specific state of mind. It's about taking the time to live freely and consciously. It's about being aware and embracing the ephemerality and fragility of life.”

CHARLIE HOUSTON RETURNS WITH NEW SINGLE “BITCHES IN THE BATHROOM”

Photo Credit: Scott Pilgrim // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

Today, 21-year old genre-bending artist Charlie Houston shares “Bitches In The Bathroom,” her first new single since the release of her debut 5-song EP I Hate Spring. “Bitches In The Bathroom” was inspired by the all-too-relatable experience of not being able to use the bathroom at a party because it’s full of people gossiping and filming videos for TikTok. The upbeat indie pop single poses an important question: "Bitches in the bathroom, whatchu want?” As the world slowly re-opens and bleary-eyed college kids return to bars and clubs, Houston’s anthem is certain to be both an uplifting soundtrack and cautionary tale for partying in 2022.

“Bitches In The Bathroom” follows Houston’s debut I Hate Spring EP release earlier in 2021. The 5-song collection which covered timeless themes like first kisses, messy breakups and summer flings earned the praises of Zane Lowe, NPR, SPIN, and many more.

PRAISE FOR CHARLIE HOUSTON

“Her debut EP I Hate Spring casts back to timeless memories of fumbling early romance—first kisses, messy breakups, and short-lived flirtations are all soundtracked by weightless indie pop and R&B stylings.” - Under The Radar

“It’s a striking debut, an unguarded, ultra-personal tapestry—stories of heartbreak and struggle, sung in her soothing, signature voice.” - SPIN

“‘Things’ is an unadulterated look at youthful insecurities and unrequited affection. Over a somber but punchy backdrop, she delivers an evocative performance that is ripe with honesty.” - EARMILK

“Charlie Houston's bouncy contemporary R&B-inflected pop straightforwardly addresses the meaningful mundanities of Gen Z life.” - Bandcamp “New and Notable”
