“Inspired by the tongue-in-cheek songwriting of Soccer Mommy and Courtney Barnett, "Double Aquarius" is full of memorable lines drenched in witty, self-deprecating humour about watching reruns of Glee and killing the mood at a party by playing Sufjan Stevens. But it's the kernels of truth that lie beneath that make this such a relatable listen, illuminating inner battles that we all have on a regular basis.” CBC Music on “Double Aquarius”

“Their songwriting is superb, as they share specific events and thoughts that made them feel out-of-place. Larsen’s situation is partly self-inflicted as well as out of their control. It’s the perfect storm that we know all too well. …Bells Larsen is a name to be excited about” The Revue on “Double Aquarius”

“the bouncy and upbeat folk-tinged anthem ponders the affinity between love and the stars.” Exclaim! On “Double Aquarius

Last month, Bells Larsen (he/they, il/iel) shared their first single “Double Aquarius” from an album they started writing at the age of nineteen, during what would prove to be the start of a hugely transitional time in their life. In the five years since the songs on Good Grief began to take shape, Larsen has moved across the country, studied philosophy at a small liberal arts college, dropped out, and then moved across the country again. Larsen’s life was also put on pause after the sudden death of their first love. Since this person’s passing, Larsen has been writing songs that attempt to express this person’s spirit and create a tangible container for their memory. “This loss left so many people with so many unanswered questions, myself included,” Larsen admits. “I haven’t always arrived at answers to these questions, but songwriting has provided me with a way to at least ask.”

Now, Larsen is sharing another new track from their debut LP, “People Who Mean So Much To Me”, a song that features Leith Ross on background vocals and is composed of “vignettes about three distinct relationships that I had fostered throughout the span of a single year,” says Larsen. “I wrote ‘People Who Mean So Much To Me’ during the pandemic, while I was really missing community. The song is a reminder to myself that, even when I’m feeling lonely and isolated, I will continue to cross paths with incredible people and build meaningful relationships.”

The single arrives with a video Directed by Daniel Crawford and animated by Bachar Bachoura, Daniel Crawford, and Katie Finn which features wasps, a main motif throughout Good Grief. “The record itself is about loss, and the act of losing can be like a wasp's sting,” says Larsen. “Also, there's a voice memo that features a song about wasps that bookends the record. This is all to say that it feels like I've had a wasp following me around for the past few years. That's where the idea for the 'People Who Mean So Much To Me Video' came from.”

MORE ABOUT GOOD GRIEF
While demoing this collection of songs at an artist residency in Banff, it dawned on Larsen that the experience of loss exists outside of losing someone; we mourn places and memories, too. “The definition of the word “loss” changes all the time for me,” says Larsen. “What does it mean to have truly lost someone? Something? If I lose something, how do I know for certain that I’ve lost it for good? As I reflected on the experience of losing my first love, I wrote songs that allowed me to explore these trains of thought.” The result was a record that bridges the gaps between I, you, and we to narrate an intentional mediation on what it means to experience grief as young queer person.

The first voice we hear on Larsen’s album is that of their first love; “Ready?” she asks. As if to answer her, Good Grief then begins with an audio recording from 2013 of Larsen and their high school friends singing Sufjan Stevens’ song "The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us!" around a campfire. “Loss is a wasp’s sting,” says Larsen. “This Sufjan song has been dear to me for a long time, but I understood it very differently after my first love passed away.”

When Larsen was recording Good Grief, they sought out old voice memos to use as interludes in between songs. “I wanted to make the music sound more human,” Larsen admits. “Eventually, I found the campfire recording from the tenth grade, and I was immediately struck by the fact that the most prominent voice is that of my first love.” Larsen edited the clip down to about thirty seconds in order to highlight several lines in the song which are, to them, the most poignant with regards to the theme of loss. Larsen shares: “When the record starts and my ex says ‘ready?’, part of me knows that she’s asking my friends and I if we were ready to sing around that fire all those years ago, but there’s also a part of me that feels like – in some way – she’s asking grown-up-me if I’m ‘ready’ to share my songs about grief now.”

The album quickly unfurls like a bildungsroman, touching on love, loss, growing up, growing old, moving on, and moving forward. Songs like “Teenage Love” and “Sweater Weather'' conjure vivid landscapes of memory through Larsen’s lyricism, which is conversational and inviting, while being intimate and candid. Community and friendship are central to the song “People Who Mean So Much To Me”, which features vocals from Larsen’s close friend and fellow musician, Leith Ross. Larsen explains: “this song is composed of vignettes about three distinct relationships that I had fostered throughout the span of a single year. I wrote it during the pandemic, while I was really missing community.” To Larsen, the song is a reminder to them that, even when they’re feeling lonely and isolated, they will continue to cross paths with wonderful people and build meaningful relationships.

Larsen co-produced the record with fellow musician Graham Ereaux who performs under the name Devarrow. Good Grief was recorded at Ereaux’s studio in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, where Larsen and Ereaux were joined by multi-instrumentalist Evan Matthews. “There was such an advantage to bringing my songs to two people who are not intimately connected to my experiences. Neither Evan nor Graham listened to my songs as artifacts of grief, but rather, they heard them as compositional elements.” With the record in hand, Larsen enlisted Howard Bilerman (Leonard Cohen, Arcade Fire) to mix the record, back home in Montreal.

The five years that it took to write Good Grief encompass so many aspects of Larsen’s life, capturing a coming-of-age story and documenting an ongoing process – of an artist and of a human being – as they try to navigate the terrain of their existence and that of those around them. It’s an experience of their loss but also honours the person that was lost to them. The record closes with a reprise of the “Wasps” audio recording, marrying the past and present as the old voice memo slowly fades into a newer one. Present-day Larsen sings, “I can tell you I love her each day”: a testament to the fact that their grief is –  finally – good.

" I don't know if it's Buckley's dream to be an essential new voice in Canadian music, but she is. Everywhere I Used to Be should prove that." - CBC Music

"The first single is "Shooting at the Moon," a propulsive heartland rock/alt-country song that comes with soaring pedal steel, a War On Drugs-y rhythm section, and a hook from Mariel that you'll be humming after one listen.” - Brooklyn Vegan on “Shooting At The Moon”

"...a shimmering pop gem. It’s driving AF and gallops with country flair, but it’s low on twang. And that’s just fine – Buckley sounds very much in charge in her new sonic digs, coupled with the production styling of Marcus Paquin” - Country Queer on “Shooting At The Moon”

Recently, Mariel Buckley shared her new single, “Shooting At The Moon”, which has already found itself on CBC Music Top 20. Today, the celebrated songwriter is sharing another new track from her upcoming Marcus Paquin (The Weather Station, The Barr Brothers, Arcade Fire, The National, Julia Jacklin) produced album, Everywhere I Used To Be, out August 12 via Birthday Cake Records.

“Driving Around” was “the result of a new love interest, and because everything was closed, I had to get creative to impress,” says Buckley. “It reminded me of being a queer kid in high school, having to go on dates just cruising around because we were usually hiding from someone. It was nice to reclaim that feeling of freedom and joy, now in my thirties; and not feeling the need to hide from anyone.”

MORE ABOUT EVERYWHERE I USED TO BE

Unapologetically genuine, wry, and soft-hearted - Mariel Buckley has planted her flag firmly as a songwriter who’s in it for the long haul. She aims to find herself squarely on the fringes and exactly where she belongs: singing and writing songs for the underdog. And that’s exactly where her new album, Everywhere I Used to Be, lives.

Everywhere I Used To Be is sonically anchored by the haunting whine of pedal steel, a tastefully weighted, deep groove – rounded out by heavy synth pads and vibrant guitar parts. The resulting collection is a driving, swooning, toe-tapping catharsis; sealed and delivered by Buckley’s signature crooning brand of angst-ridden alt-folk.

“When you grow up as the town freak, you get used to hiding who you are to become more palatable for those around you,” she says. “While I've been great at speaking my mind in person, my music has often remained a vague, if not softer representation of my stuff, until now. All I said about my life in direct detail on my last record was that I was ‘kept a secret’ - and I couldn’t go any deeper.

When I wrote this record, l felt myself becoming clearer in the process. I became softer in my personal life and sharper in my songs. I finally saw the person, musician and songwriter I wanna be coming into focus, all together. Mental illness, addiction, bad choices, and abusive relationships have made that journey really fucking long and really difficult. It felt like coming home. Selfishly, this album gave me something I’d been looking for my whole life. I hope to give people a chance to hear themselves in these stories.

I wrote this album for losers and underdogs. I want every outsider and lost soul to feel seen and safe with these songs. I wrote it for kids who do/did feel underrepresented in the mainstream media, in church, at school or at home. I wrote it for anyone who's ready to make a change, and especially for those who aren't.”

Buckley and Paquin made an intentional move towards contemporary production, and quickly found themselves in a daily rhythm of deconstructing and rebuilding each song to find its full potential. Backed by some of Canada’s finest session musicians, their collective efforts are showcased with abundant heart, and skillful flourishes while respecting the space necessary for the songs to speak. Perhaps her mysterious ambiguity around genre, traditional storytelling, and identity is what gives these new songs such an honest shine.

MORE ABOUT MARIEL BUCKLEY
Born and raised on the prairies in a conservative core, Buckley spent most of her youth playing hockey, getting into trouble and writing it all down. After dabbling in guitar for near a decade, she took up some bar gigs, playing mostly traditional country music. Buckley began writing original music in her early twenties and found a natural comfort in speaking her mind through song. After several years of honing her craft on and off the stage, she began seeing larger support slots – k.d. Lang notably saying: “this kid has a big future.”

Buckley’s first official release, Driving in the Dark (2018), garnered international press and began solidifying her as part of the roots community in North America. With recognition from No Depression, CBC Music, Wide Open Country and PopMatters; she was building momentum quickly. And now after two-years forced hiatus and a new album, she’s ready to continue being a trail in her own right. With a firm grip on the steering wheel and a destination in mind - we’re just happy to be along for the ride.
