You may recognize Marcus Paquin’s name from the liner-notes of many well-loved records over the past twenty years. From his work on albums by The National, Local Natives, The Weather Station, Julia Jacklin, Begonia, Sarah Harmer, and countless others, Marcus’s accolades as collaborator and co-creator are wide ranging and illustrious. Marcus’ first solo effort Our Love sees him moving out of the liner notes and onto the cover.

“The catharsis that came of writing the songs on this album helped me process the pain of my separation from my partner of 18 years and recognize the beauty and the healing power of my own self-love,” says Paquin. ”En route to accepting my new path, I saw clearly that love is everywhere and that we need only extend an open hand to receive it and an open heart to give it. Our Love is an exploration of my relationship with love and an ode to love in its many forms.”

Our Love was written, arranged, played, produced and mixed by Marcus with drumming from friend and former bandmate Liam O’Neill (Suuns). It combines Marcus’ raw and intimate song writing with his veteran production chops, blending traditional indie rock sounds with lush layers of electronics and synths.

Today, he shares the first track from the album, “The Way Forward”. “After years of personal struggle, I found myself considering whether staying on my chosen path was ultimately for the best,” explains Paquin. “I questioned my understanding of unconditional love and sought to find a sense of self love that was missing in my life. This song speaks of that search and of my decision to let go, find compassion and regain a love of life and self.”

MORE ABOUT MARCUS PAQUIN
Since the first time Marcus heard the iconic Beatles record Abbey Road, his trajectory was defined – music was to be his lifelong obsession. From an early age, he spent countless hours lying next to his Fisher Price turntable, wearing out the grooves of his favorite records in his mother’s collection. Music connected with Marcus in a way that was visceral, raw and emotional. Through his adolescence rock posters, tour shirts, guitar straps and LP jackets were a staple in his bedroom. He fawned over Morrissey lyrics, Eddie solos, Bonham grooves and Michael’s moves and spent countless hours practicing guitar – learning songs, writing songs and playing in bands. It became his mission to decode the puzzle pieces that evoked such emotion.

Marcus dissected recorded music and poured over its component parts, trying to decipher how they had been played and recorded. At fifteen, he became adept at making professional sounding recordings with his Tascam 464 recorder. He enjoyed the creative aspects of multitrack recording and the way different microphones, tape types and speeds affected the sonic quality of his recorded compositions. Recording opened new avenues for his craft and creativity, so in his early twenties he enrolled in the Music Performance degree at McGill University in Montreal where he studied jazz guitar and then completed a Masters degree in sound recording. From 2009-2011 he signed to Last Gang records with his band Silver Starling as primary composer and lead singer.

“Captivating vocal range goes from dusky velvet ruminations to achingly soaring longing” - Big Takeover

Today, Tamino shares “You Don’t Own Me” from Sahar, his sophomore album due out September 23 via Arts & Crafts. The song is inspired by “Man’s Search For Meaning” by Viktor E. Frankl, a psychiatrist, philosopher and holocaust survivor who saw the search for meaning as central to the human condition. The song proclaims an existentialist commitment to freedom and offers a universal message of solace in the face of oppression.

Legendary Olivier-winning choreographer and Beyoncé collaborator Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui was commissioned to choreograph the coinciding video. The result is a magisterial interpretation of time and oppression, represented by ten dancers behaving as an anonymous horde of bodies looming over Tamino, in turn becoming an extension of the sand swarming the expanse.

Director Bastiaan Lochs says of the video, “Time, to me, is the most universal oppressing force. the passing of time weighs down on everyone everywhere always. Our lives tick away second by second and there is no escaping this. But showing clocks didn’t seem very appropriate. Sand has always been the closest relatable substance to time for me. Perhaps because of the hourglass. Sand falling and filling up a space feels like a physical representation of time beating down relentlessly. The idea of Tamino in a house slowly filling up with sand started forming. A place undefinable in time. Where each second might as well be an eternity.”

MORE SAHAR
Born from Tamino’s Antwerp apartment and bolstered by collaborators including Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood, producer/engineer PJ Maertens and drummer Ruben Vanhoutte, Sahar is a powerhouse sophomore effort that mixes Arabic folk and experimental indie rock with sweeping orchestral arrangements. On Sahar, Tamino rearticulates the Arabic oud, the instrument of his grandfather Muharram Fouad, one of Egypt’s most celebrated singers and actors, into more a ‘typical’ indie rock instrumentation. The way it pairs with his smoldering voice creates a sonic landscape which is lush, layered and haunting. Sahar is where the romanticism and tragedy of Jeff Buckley meets a cosmopolitan, universalist aesthetic sensibility – an effortless mingling of European, American and Middle Eastern influences.

Tamino is set to tour Europe and North America this fall and has already sold out in London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Amsterdam, NYC, Montreal and Toronto. To meet the demand, second nights have been added in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Paris, and Brussels.

DAN MANGAN ANNOUNCE NEW LP, SHARES “JUST KNOW IT”

Photo Credit: Jonah Atkins // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

Being Somewhere, Dan Mangan’s sixth studio album, cuts incisively but never forgets its underlying thesis: It’s cool to care.

Mangan arms the rebels in the crusade for tenderness. The album is a combative plea for mercy from a manic world and its effects on the psyche. Whittling his sharpest pen to date, Being Somewhere is marked by Mangan’s singular wit and a respectful deference to the quagmire of existence.

“I wanted this album to feel like the inside crook of a familiar elbow on the nape of your neck, a comforting embrace” says Mangan, “These songs are tenderhearted and unfurl like an overdue conversation with a dear friend. They essentially lay out where we’re at, how I’m doing, and how I think I can help."Today, Mangan is sharing “Just Know It”, a lush piano-driven track about being worn down by the inability to find common ground. “This is a song about shooting yourself in the foot, told from the foot’s perspective. There’s barely any gray area left in the middle ground, explains Mangan. “We are so averse to seeing the other side achieve a win, we would rather that all sides lose.”

MORE ABOUT BEING SOMEWHERE
571 emails. 100+ hours on the phone and thousands of text messages. A mere 3 days spent in-person together over two and a half years of long-distance work. Such a displaced recording process might make anyone question the concept of being anywhere at all, let alone being somewhere else.

This is how Dan Mangan and collaborator/producer Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck) manifested Being Somewhere. All components were recorded in isolation and beamed up to the mothership. No piece of the puzzle ended up as expected, and each moment is the fruition of separate, yet conjoined, rabbit holes.

“The hard part was waiting,” Mangan says of the long-distance process, “sometimes it took six weeks to resolve an issue that could have taken twenty minutes had we been together in a room. But Drew’s dedication and talent cannot be understated, and this music doesn’t sound like anything else I’m hearing these days."

Under the care of Drew Brown’s distinct touch, Being Somewhere forges sonics well beyond the tropes of modern folk music. Helming the project from Chicago, Brown sourced musical contributions from all over North America, the UK and Japan, including work from Joey Waronker (Beck, Atoms for Peace), Jason Falkner (Beck, St. Vincent), Thomas Bartlett (The National, Taylor Swift), Dave Okumu (Arlo Parks, Adele), Mary Lattimore (Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten), and Broken Social Scene frontman Kevin Drew.
