In a few days Georgia Harmer will take the stage, headlining at Toronto’s Longboat Hall on December 1, before heading to Montreal on December 14 for her last performance of 2022 at Casa Del Popolo. Georgia will then prepare for an 18 date North American tour with The Rural Alberta Advantage beginning February 23. Today, the twenty-two year-old Toronto-based musician is sharing two alternate versions of “Headrush” and “Homes” from her debut album, Stay In Touch, out now via Arts & Crafts

“It’s been just over a year since ‘Headrush’ came out and started slowly introducing the world to Stay In Touch,” says Harmer. “The songs on the album were written over the course of many years, through many periods of huge growth. These alternate versions take two of the foundational songs on Stay In Touch back to how they sounded when I first wrote them, just words and melodies of emotional processing. Singing them now in this way brings me back to their meaning, and the way it evolves and stays true over time.”

MORE ABOUT GEORGIA HARMER
With a wisdom and poise that belies her youthful age, Harmer has penned an emotionally resonant collection of songs that articulate the ways in which even the most fleeting experiences can forge bonds between strangers, create families out of friends, and one by one form the joys and sorrows that make up a life. Sonically, Stay In Touch spans everything from intimate folk and strummy country to sophisticated jazz and pop-kissed rock. Harmer and her band created musical landscapes that live up to the lyrical richness of the songs.

Stay In Touch is an unforgettable statement from a new artist with a heartbreakingly simple message: when you stay in touch with the experiences that have shaped you, you stay in touch with yourself. The album is full of romanticism – a rare quality in an irony-soaked culture. For Harmer, this is a record about “staying in touch with the aspects of yourself, your life, the world, that keep you aware of what's most important. Whether that's people, relationships, deep feelings, the value of togetherness and support. It’s about finding the balance between holding on and letting go, between the beauty of the world and the pain in the world.”

KILLBEAT MUSIC’S 2022 YEAR IN REVIEW

As the music industry continues to come out from their ad hoc basement recording studios and zoom writing sessions, walking the tightrope that is live touring, it is at least a breath of fresh air to see artists rewarded for their hard work.

This year at Killbeat Music, we’ve seen artists make their debut, strike it out solo, or take home the top prize in the country. The Polaris Music Prize named Pierre Kwenders and his LP José Louis And The Paradox of Love the winner of the 2022 award and nominated Charlotte Day Wilson’s Alpha, Ombiigizi’s Sewn Back Together, and Ouri’s Frame Of A Fauna to the Short List.

The Long List also included nominations for PUP’s latest release, THE UNRAVELLING OF PUPTHEBAND, Ada Lea’s one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden, and Jean-Michel Blais’ aubades.

At the JUNO Awards, Charlotte Day Wilson was nominated for three awards, Songwriter, Producer, and R&B/Soul Record of the year. Allison Russell followed with two of her own for Songwriter and Contemporary Roots album (which she won), while Donovan Woods, Andy Shauf, and The Weather Station all received nods of their own.

Next year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards we will find out if Ken Yates Cerulean will win Contemporary Album Of The Year and if Abigail Lapell’s Stolen Time will take home the English Songwriter Prize.

If you turned on a radio in 2022 you might have heard tracks from Katie Tupper’s Towards The End, Georgia Harmer’s Stay In Touch, and Lydia Persaud’s Moody31 making their way up the CBC Music Top 20. The chart also saw entries from Busty and the Bass, Lowell, Charlie Houston, Allison Russell, Julia Jacklin, LOONY, and currently has songs from 2023 albums by Gabrielle Shonk, Gord Downie & Bob Rock and Begonia.

CBC’s q with Tom Power also had an depth interview with Dan Mangan about new LP Being Somewhere as well as chatting with Tami Neilson about her new LP Kingmaker, The Trade-Offs about their new LP let go, give in, fall down and spun tracks from Field Guide’s self-titled LP, Jesse Northey’s Onion Knight, Niall Mutter’s Pass Me By, Mike Edel’s Casseroles & Flowers and more.

Tuning in to SiriusXM this year, you probably heard the likes of Broken Social Scene, Marcus Paquin featured on The Verge, while North Americana added songs from Jason Collett, Jordan Klassen, Sam Weber, Geoffroy, and more.

If you headed left of the dial, Yves JarvisThe Zug and Cola’s Deep In View would have taken you right to the Number One spot on the !earshot Top 50 and Julia Jacklin’s Pre Pleasure would have done the same over on the NACC Top 200. It’s the same spot you would have heard Status / Non-Status, Ghost Woman, Sunglaciers, Broken Social Scene, and Ghostkeeper, who all released albums this year that made it into the Top 10 on earshot.

The Folk / Roots charts on the college and community waves were commandeered by Mariel Buckley’s Everywhere I Used To Be, which has currently held the #1 spot for a few weeks now. Abigail Lapell and Pharis & Jason Romero’s Tell ‘Em You Were Gold also took top spot on the chart this year with albums from Ariel Posen, The Secret Beach, and Bells Larsen, also making appearances.

On the International Charts, be on the lookout for Ruby Singh’s new release with The Future Ancestors - his album Vox.Infold from earlier this year spent a few weeks in the Top 10.

And if you follow the bass over to the Hip Hop Chart, you’d see long time Peanuts & Corn recording artist Pip Skid taking over the top spot with his LP, A Really Nice Day. Odario Williams also spun tracks from another P&C release on CBC’s Afterdark, Noodles, the experimental collaboration between bigmcenroe and Alvaro Rojas. The late night radio show also saw spins from Colyn Cameron, Tamino, Kyla Charter, and Absolutely Free.

While we’re tuned into the CBC, the Radio 3 Top 10 saw songs from new albums by, Living Hour, and Reuben and the Dark rise to Number 1 alongside charting songs from the likes of Sam Jr., Scott Hardware and more while CBC Radio 1’s regional shows spun songs from Ellen Froese, Evan Redsky, Jenny Berkel, Emma Worley and more that were heard all across Canada.

Here’s to 2023. Keep your stick on the ice!

This Friday, Marcus Paquin will release his debut album, Our Love, via Birthday Cake Records. You may recognize Paquin’s name from the liner-notes of many well-loved records over the past twenty years. From his work on albums by The National, Local Natives, The Weather Station, Julia Jacklin, Begonia, Sarah Harmer, and countless others, Marcus’s accolades as collaborator and co-creator are wide ranging and illustrious. Marcus’ first solo effort Our Love sees him moving out of the liner notes and onto the cover.

Today, he shares the final single before the album’s release, “Until It’s Gone”, which arrives complete with a video made by Paquin who says the piece illustrates “the varying states of our consciousness. As we weave our way through this complicated thing called life, we can oscillate between an illuminated state of awareness in which the senses are fully engaged and a state of darkness where it is difficult to decipher even what is right in front of us.“

MORE ABOUT OUR LOVE
“The catharsis that came of writing the songs on this album helped me process the pain of my separation from my partner of 18 years and recognize the beauty and the healing power of my own self-love,” says Paquin. ”En route to accepting my new path, I saw clearly that love is everywhere and that we need only extend an open hand to receive it and an open heart to give it. Our Love is an exploration of my relationship with love and an ode to love in its many forms.”

Our Love was written, arranged, played, produced and mixed by Marcus with drumming from friend and former bandmate Liam O’Neill (Suuns). It combines Marcus’ raw and intimate song writing with his veteran production chops, blending traditional indie rock sounds with lush layers of electronics and synths.

MORE ABOUT MARCUS PAQUIN
Since the first time Marcus heard the iconic Beatles record Abbey Road, his trajectory was defined – music was to be his lifelong obsession. From an early age, he spent countless hours lying next to his Fisher Price turntable, wearing out the grooves of his favorite records in his mother’s collection. Music connected with Marcus in a way that was visceral, raw and emotional. Through his adolescence rock posters, tour shirts, guitar straps and LP jackets were a staple in his bedroom. He fawned over Morrissey lyrics, Eddie solos, Bonham grooves and Michael’s moves and spent countless hours practicing guitar – learning songs, writing songs and playing in bands. It became his mission to decode the puzzle pieces that evoked such emotion.

Marcus dissected recorded music and poured over its component parts, trying to decipher how they had been played and recorded. At fifteen, he became adept at making professional sounding recordings with his Tascam 464 recorder. He enjoyed the creative aspects of multitrack recording and the way different microphones, tape types and speeds affected the sonic quality of his recorded compositions. Recording opened new avenues for his craft and creativity, so in his early twenties he enrolled in the Music Performance degree at McGill University in Montreal where he studied jazz guitar and then completed a Masters degree in sound recording. From 2009-2011 he signed to Last Gang records with his band Silver Starling as primary composer and lead singer.
