Today, Reuben and the Dark are announcing their upcoming Canadian tour dates, set to begin in March of 2023. Tickets are available now and full tour details can be found below. Recently, The Berrics, reached out to Reuben to document his life in skateboarding and music. "The Berrics in LA is like the Hollywood of skateboarding,” says Bullock. “I grew up watching every video they put out. It was an honour when they reached out about my music and my past as a skateboarder. They sent a filmer to come to my home in Joshua Tree and asked me to talk about how I got into riding a skateboard…and the way that transitioned into music."

MORE ABOUT IN LIEU OF LIGHT
Reuben and the Dark’s new LP, In Lieu Of Light, is officially available everywhere courtesy of Arts & Crafts. This collection of songs is as bare and unguarded as any that singer-songwriter Reuben Bullock has offered before. “This album had no expectations put on it, it felt very free of form in a creative way. It is a snapshot of songs I was writing at a particular time, when recording them felt like a necessary letting go,” recounts Reuben. “There was a magic to that experimentation that felt natural to me.”

Recalling the spontaneity of the band’s 2014 debut Funeral Sky, the eleven new songs of In Lieu Of Light are humble and vast, wide open and lonesome, flourishing from the simplicity of gentle piano and guitar – at times favouring the delicate frame of its intimacy, at others conceding to the anthems in its melodies. It is honest heart-based music, what Reuben and the Dark does best – hymnal and cathartic songs that beg the audience’s connection.

In Lieu Of Light was recorded throughout 2021 when the world seemed at an excruciating standstill. Reuben’s pensive lyrics, always known for their environmental resonance, turn more inward on these songs from that period. There is an element of deeply relatable soul-searching at play – perseverance through darkness, grief, escapism, and a subtle celebration of this despair that we have all confronted.

Recorded by Graham Lessard in Calgary at OCL Studios, Brock Geiger at Reuben’s studio in Joshua Tree, and Joel Shearer in Los Angeles, In Lieu Of Light finds Reuben in harmony with the studio as his instrument, and the intuitive embellishments of his collaborators. The cumulative, exultant power of his songs, be it shared joy or shared sadness, is perhaps no better reflected than on the three tracks featuring the Kainai-Bloodtribe Bullhorn Singers, a collaboration that Reuben describes as “incredible and heart-expanding.” The reverberant “Timelapse Clouds” pulsates with their rhythmic and vocal accompaniment, elevating the experience of In Lieu of Light to a new level. Reuben shares about the arrival of this record:

In Lieu of Light has come from a strange and unstable time in life. There are those of us who spend time in the darkness to find the light.. to carry that light.. For everyone. This album is a humble offering of that experience.  I believe in the alchemy of emotions and that we can use pain, anxiety, fear and loss to truly feel peace, joy, love and freedom. It is my own way of processing a lot of things happening in the inner and outer spaces of the heart and soul of everything.“

Early next year, Jill Barber will release her new album, Homemaker, via Outside Music, but as we approach the end of this year, the celebrated songwriter has one more glimpse into the LP to share. "Beautiful Life" is a written reminder “that social media doesn’t tell the whole story,” says Barber. “That a pretty picture doesn’t always reflect the whole truth, and that living a rich and beautiful life is about embracing the messy chaos of it all- the raw, authentic, and real moments, rather than just the highlight reel.”

MORE ABOUT HOMEMAKER

With Homemaker, Barber delivers ten quietly profound songs about the complexities of motherhood, marriage, and the struggle to feel at home in one’s own identity. It was over the past few years that Jill began to feel an increasing disparity between her public image as “Canada’s Sweetheart” and the reality of her domestic life as an overwhelmed wife and mother. “One day I was headlining Massey Hall, and the next day I was sweeping a messy hall” she quips. “I was afraid to break the spell of the more romantic version of myself that I put out there in the world and which helped define my career, but I eventually reached a breaking point where I needed to write this album in order to reconcile these two versions of myself and feel okay about all aspects of who I am.” These songs tell the story of what happens to the young romantic when she reaches “middle age,” with Jill recasting “The Homemaker” as the hero of her own story, reclaiming its power for herself and others.

Written and recorded in Barber’s adopted hometown of Vancouver where she lives with her husband and two children, Homemaker is the first record that sees Jill in the role of a producer, co-producing with Erik Nielsen (City and Colour), and featuring some of Vancouver’s top session players like Paul Rigby (Neko Case), and Geoff Hicks (Colin James). “These songs are so damn personal, and such a deep reflection of my soul, that I felt an almost maternal instinct to both protect them and produce them for myself,” says Barber. “I really feel like I stepped into my own power as a producer on this record, with a lot of generous assistance from engineer/producer Erik Nielsen, who really championed my abilities in the studio.”

Homemaker is a return to Jill’s folk roots. Whereas her most recent albums have been bathed in lush string arrangements, Homemaker sees emotions laid bare, with a stripped-down production style reminiscent of her acclaimed debut Oh Heart and double JUNO Award-nominated follow-up, For All Time. But mostly, Homemaker is a statement about the humility and strength that it takes to do the meaningful work of creating a home for others, while still holding space for your own dreams.

Cots – the Montreal-based solo project of composer, singer, and guitarist Steph Yates – today releases "Flowers (Fresh Cut)" – the second single from her upcoming Moonlit Building EP, produced in collaboration with the talented musician Olivier Fairfield. “Flowers (Fresh Cut)” is a reshuffle of the centrepiece of Cots's enchanting debut album, Disturbing Body, which CBC likened to Feist's Let It Die, and MOJO described as "the sophistication of Everything But The Girl's Eden meets the sadness of Portuguese fado." Rearranged from its original form as the beautiful skeletal bossanova track “Flowers,” the new “Fresh Cut” version is tilted askew with robotic drums pronouncing the song's ambling essence with mis-emphasis. Fairfield – a member of art-punk outfit FET.NAT and contributor to the sonic visions of Andy Shauf, Timber Timbre, Last Ex and many more – reimagines Steph Yates's elegant nylon string dirge by removing that elemental guitar, instead wrapping warped samba-inspired levity around its soft implication.

Yates says: "I have long admired Olivier’s rhythmic sensibility and his knack for moodiness in production, and felt he might be a good match for this set of songs. Working in-studio together was collaborative and experimental: trying things out, trading off instruments, seeing what stuck."

The new perspective on “Flowers” underscores the depth of Yates’s songwriting throughout Cots’s nascent catalogue. The Guelph, Ontario-bred musician cut her teeth in the local DIY scene, where she learned to be “loud, assertive, and unabashedly scrappy” in outfits like Esther Grey and Cupcake Ductape. A startling evolution of her lush sonic palette, the Moonlit Building EP shows how far Cots’s spare and lovely sound can bend without breaking. The recently released title track, “Moonlit Building,” deepens its somber, mysterious beauty, her off-kilter folk absorbing noir qualities from Fairfield’s accompaniment, her crystalline voice devolving in unison with his gravely baritone, cavernous guitar, and eroding rhythm.
