The long celebrated, and JUNO Award nominated group, The Deep Dark Woods, are sharing another track from their upcoming album, Broadside Ballads Vol. III. An 8-song LP, the record will lend a familiar melancholic warmth to a collection of traditional folk songs spanning centuries and continents.

“The Banks Of The Lough Erne” is a take on a traditional Irish song of emigration has many names, Rambling Irishman, Lough Erne, New York Bay, and An Irishman From Monaghan amongst many others. “I first heard it by the beautiful Irish singer Dolores Keane and her group De Danann,” says Ryan Boldt. “I thought Erin Rae, one of my favourite current singers going, would do a wonderful job singing the song, making it sound less Irish and more American. Our voices work very well together and I hope we can make more music together in the future.”

MORE ABOUT THE DEEP DARK WOODS
Intertwined amongst their albums of original material, Deep Dark Woods has been steadily building up a series of releases called Broadside Ballads, focusing on traditional Irish, English, and Scottish folk songs. It's a fitting tribute to the music that influenced Ryan Boldt’s writing and singing since first forming the band, and like their forebears, Deep Dark Woods aims to take their own experiences of traditional music and create something new and vital. The songs in this collection mine some of the more brutal depths of human experience, touching on broken hearts, love, murder, and the act of leaving. Boldt notes that “there are not too many jolly songs in there”, but the album is not a dour affair, instead benefiting from tasteful, unstated arrangements and an organic, no-frills recording sound. The songs on Vol. III generously display Deep Dark Woods' deep-seated links to the past while still sounding just like themselves.

One might be tempted to think of the Deep Dark Woods as a band steeped in ‘capital-T’ tradition, and that may be true, but now nearly two decades into their life as one of Canada's finest folk-roots ensembles, that tradition is one of their own invention. The voice of founding member Ryan Boldt sits at the forefront of the band, and it doesn't take long to reveal that he is a master of subtlety and shading, working in the lineage of iconic singers like Bob Dylan, Bert Jansch, Rick Danko, and Jason Molina. Boldt, a relentless lifelong listener of music, says “It's all I do. When I'm not playing music, I'm listening to it, trying to find songs that make me feel an aching pain in my chest.” Accordingly, his singing is full of highly emotive nuance and an elegant, relaxed precision that makes it seem downright effortless, a perfect vehicle for the band's particular brand of updated folk music.

Fellow travellers like keyboard whiz Geoff Hilhorst, veteran drummer Mike Silverman, and Evan Cheadle round out the Deep Dark Woods unit, and they are often assisted by like-minded collaborators such as singer-songwriter Ellen Froese, Erik Nielsen, Leon Power, and the acclaimed duo Kacy & Clayton. This crew creates a powerful combination, and has amassed a pile of celebrated albums, EPs, and host of nominations from music awards outfits from across the country. Together they recall classic units like The Band, mid-period Wilco, and American Beauty-era Grateful Dead, but also legendary late '60s UK groups like Fairport Convention, Pentangle, and Steeleye Span.

"(‘Stolen Time’) A disc of pure, impalpable beauty, weightless notes and melodies that pierce our hearts.... And the young woman, prey to a vagueness in the soul that she sublimates in a handful of magical songs, to offer us a twilight album, somewhere between Gillian Welch and Laura Veirs." - Rolling Stone

“[Lapell’s] beautiful fourth album ‘Stolen Time’ is a moving collection of songs inspired by nature, the seasons, and her family’s experience as refugees fleeing eastern Europe during the Holocaust.” - The Guardian

“(‘Stolen Time’) The album’s apparent simplicities belie an emotionally complex set, a sequence that addresses an assortment of difficult subjects, energized throughout by Lapell’s sober yet deeply expressive voice.” - No Depression

“Lapell’s masterful skills on finger-style guitar, harmonica, piano once again return to effortlessly complement her eerily beautiful vocals.” - KUTX (NPR)

"The standout track 'Rattlesnake' begins with a slowly ramping up guitar that is sparse and haunting yet upbeat. Lapell lays down vocals that feel rooted and soulful with an element of blues running through her unique style of folk-noir." - Glide Magazine

Today, Toronto singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abigail Lapell unveiled her new single “Count on Me”, a spellbinding duet with the acclaimed indie-folk band Great Lake Swimmers. It’s the latest track from her upcoming album Anniversary, out May 10 via Outside Music.

A love song for both weddings and funerals, “Count on Me” explores the passage of time – celebrating the rhythms of a shared life and coming to terms with its brevity. Through the track, melodic strums breeze across enchanting harmonies offered by Lapell and Tony Dekker of Great Lake Swimmers as lyrics promise an earnest vow to a loved one. “I started writing ‘Count on Me’ for my sister’s wedding and finished it in time for her first anniversary,” Abigail says. “It’s a song for me that evokes marriages or funerals or other life ceremonies.” The scrapbook style video, directed by Krpie, brings the romantic track to life through an array of collage, animations, and rotoscoping, piecing together images of lovers throughout different eras of time.

Abigail Lapell will be embarking on a North American tour this spring, making stops across Canada with more dates to be announced. Tickets for all shows are available here

MORE ABOUT ANNIVERSARY
On her upcoming album Anniversary, Abigail Lapell interrogates the romantic ideal of growing old together. “Anniversary” means literally “returning yearly,” and the album’s 11 songs track the revolving days, seasons, and years to celebrate and complicate the notion of eternal love.

Throughout the project, Lapell drew inspiration from a series of personal milestones, including turning 40, along with the fifteenth anniversary of her father’s death – and, more recently, several weddings and births in her family. She offers a 40-something vision of love, haunted by the ghosts of departed loved ones, past relationships or even the spectre of faded youth. An evocative collection of original love songs, the album balances upbeat earworms with elegiac ballads, ultimately emerging as an earnest celebration of commitment.

Anniversary was fittingly recorded in the historic 200-year-old St. Mark’s Church adjoining a cemetery, in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, complimenting the project’s resonant and hauntingly intimate theme. Lapell tapped Tony Dekker (Great Lake Swimmers) to co-produce the album, who helped shape the project’s spooky, resonant sound while lending his voice to a few mesmerizing duets. The two assembled a stellar cast of musicians to round out Lapell’s vocals, piano, harmonica and fingerstyle electric guitar. The ensemble’s sensitive, orchestral country-jazz arrangements reveal the depth of Lapell’s musical palette – making use of the church’s in-house piano, harpsichord and several antique organs.

Across the album, Lapell’s deft lyrics jostle with love song tropes, grappling with love’s finitude and the irony of how codependency and longing are revered in popular music. “I wanted to explore some of the contradictions within the pop culture notion of love,” Lapell says. “These dichotomies of light and dark, love and loss, fleeting and eternal – even in the traditional wedding vows, ‘sickness and health, richer or poorer.’” Ultimately, while deconstructing the myths of romantic love, Anniversary emerges as an earnest celebration of commitment – acknowledging its tragedy and hope, and its power to haunt and console at the same time.

Anniversary comes on the heels of Abigail Lapell’s critically acclaimed 2022 album Stolen Time, and her project Lullabies. Over the course of her musical journey, Lapell has garnered three Canadian Folk Music Awards, hit number one on Canadian folk radio and reached a staggering 40 million+ streams on Spotify alone. She tours widely across Canada and the US.

Rising indie-pop duo chemical club return with new single "Brave In My Arms". With catchy bass lines and jangly guitar riffs, the mid-tempo groovy song is a motivational message about finding fulfillment within yourself in the months after the end of a long-term relationship: ‘So I’m brave in my arms / Braver than I’ve been in any other arms / Before today’.

On the single, chemical club says‘Brave in My Arms’ is a song about finding fulfillment within yourself in the months after the end of a long term relationship. The demo was recorded at an AirBnb in Los Angeles in the spring of last year while we were on tour with fanclubwallet. Other members of the band took a day trip to the Malibu coastline while Eric opted to stay in and write. Months later, we finished the song together at our home in Ottawa.”
