Known for its transportive works in sound and vision, Toronto psych trio Absolutely Free recently released its original soundtrack recording for the art-house film Two Cares Due None. The gorgeously haunting and masterfully responsive score distills the film’s dramatic landscapes with suspenseful notes of magic-realism and minimalism. Its stirring, mysterious instrumental compositions range from reflective ambience to polyrhythmic electronic music, bringing to mind the iconic film scores of John Carpenter, Tangerine Dream, Cliff Martinez, and Geoff Barrow & Ben Salisbury. Two Cares Due None marks the band’s first foray into feature-length composition, after previously scoring short films by Norman McLaren for the National Film Board of Canada.

Now, Absolutely Free opens a window onto the geographic and cultural landscapes that shape Two Cares Due None with the music video for “The Office / The Community.” Featuring footage captured by directors Melissa Fisher-Rozenberg and Chris Boni on location in Iceland, Italy, and Canada, Absolutely Free articulates the dark pastel images of towering countryside with a tense blend of whistling synthesizers and shuffling electronic rhythm that forms one of the score’s central melodic themes.

“The film entranced us into a distinct musical universe,” says the trio of Michael Claxton, Moshe Fisher-Rozenberg, and Matthew King. “There was no resisting its aesthetic demands, which lead us deep into compositions that indulge mood over melody, exploring the subtleties at the periphery of what we have created live and on record up to this point.”

The independent feature film explores the ways in which different cultures place value on objects, as commonplace Icelandic artifacts gain exemplary worth in Canada’s art world and Italy’s black market. Absolutely Free – whose previous releases provide uniquely prismatic views of the polarized ideologies that exist in our culture –  intuits these concepts with incredible fluidity, adorning the imagery in distinctive, otherworldly sound.

“What was revealed to us during our production voyages to Iceland and Italy were the mystical links that our script shared with the native culture. Working intuitively in a foreign landscape and culture enriched the aspect of chance that this fictional piece is steeped in,” recall the directors. “Absolutely Free’s score replies to the authentic locations, concepts, and production design with their own significant vision, enhancing the surreal dimension of the story.”

Two Cares Due None OST follows Absolutely Free’s 2019 EP Geneva Freeport, an absurd fantasy about taking a holiday to one of the world’s most notorious high security art storage facilities, fittingly “bringing to question the process of ascribing economic value to cultural artifacts.” In contrast to the meditative ambience of Two Cares Due None, the EP (which features Meg Remy of U.S. Girls on “Currency” and mixing by Sandro Perri) has been celebrated for its percussive urgency and “motorik-driven psychedelia” (FADER).

Two Cares Due None OST is the first full-length release since Absolutely Free’s Polaris Music Prize nominated self-titled debut album of 2014. A long-awaited official sophomore studio album has been hinted at since the Jorge Elbrecht-produced single “Still Life” surfaced in 2018. Stay tuned for more.

JADE HAIRPINS SEARCH FOR BRIGHTER FUTURES IN THEIR ROMANTIC “DOLLY DREAM” MUSIC VIDEO

jadehairpins_dollydream_newsitem.jpg

Jade Hairpins move in and out of reverie in the rose-colored video for new song “Dolly Dream”, bringing you into their world of joyful movement, wide-open spaces, and sunny yesterdays and tomorrows. This piece of musical clockwork is laden with Fender Rhodes keyboard, analog synths, layered strings, and soaring harmonies which all set the stage for the reveal of their debut full-length Harmony Avenue on May 29 via Arts & Crafts.

The music video, featuring nostalgic footage of Jade Hairpins across three continents, was co-directed by the Jade Hairpins masterminds Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco. As Falco explains, “‘Dolly Dream’ is a song about searching—not necessarily something you lack and have to ‘find,’ but grabbing hold of that ‘something’ you’ve always had. This search finds a connection within solitude, and within the crowd.”

Each Jade Hairpins song was conceived in studio, then edited and crafted by Haliechuk and Falco to become Harmony Avenue. Each approach was different—first focusing on creating stories for character-based writing, and then on less absurd emotional/thoughtful/personal reflection.

Reuben and the Dark has always made an effort to put community first and foremost. Take a look at his recent videos on Facebook and you’ll see the undeniable connection he has with his audience, all openly sharing their fears and triumphs that have resulted from quarantine. “We Will Get There” marks the next chapter for songwriter and frontman Reuben Bullock. It is the first in a series of singles to be released in the coming months, a mix of new songs, rarities, and b-sides from the un | love album sessions. On un | love, his third album for Arts & Crafts, Reuben opens a breathtakingly honest window into one of the most dramatic times in his life, baring the emotional depths encountered at life’s crossroads. Produced by Reuben and the Dark with Marcus Paquin (The National, Timber Timbre, Local Natives) and Kevin Drew (of Broken Social Scene), it is their most raw and emotional collection to date.

With "We Will Get There”, Reuben's prescient lyrics soar on an updraft of hope and patience, buoyed by the spirited melodies that unify the band and its audience. Written by Reuben Bullock with bandmates Brock Geiger and Ian Jarvis  in January 2020, the song has taken on additional meaning with the current state of the world.

In Bullock’s own words, “This song was written in a little cabin in Joshua Tree, California, before our North American tour. Before the madness of everything we are in now. It feels different from other Reuben and the Dark songs. It is intentionally gentle and upbeat. It was written from a perspective of hope; hope is looking ahead to a future that is unknown. Those words feel even more current  than the day they were written.”

Anyone who has seen Reuben and the Dark perform knows that the bandmates share a palpable bond onstage, creating a heedless energy that reverberates with the audience. Now perhaps more than ever, even though they can’t perform for live audiences, the band hopes their music can bring a feeling of togetherness to fans.

Known for vulnerability, and penchant for creating uplifting cinematic intensity in their songs, Reuben and the Dark have been featured in a variety of television shows and movies. Most recently, a cover of R.E.M.’s “Shiny Happy People set the stage for a very critical moment of Grey’s Anatomy. Earlier this year, their song Hold Your Head High” was included in the new CBS dramedy All Rise, the track Black Waterwas featured in the long-anticipated trailer for Netflix’s El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, and Bullock lent his voice to the trailer for Dolittle with a rendition of the classic “What A Wonderful World”.

Though unfortunately, the coronavirus caused Reuben and the Dark’s tour to be cut short this spring, the band hopes to be back on the road soon and in the meantime fans can be sure to connect with Reuben on social media. For artist updates, visit reubenandthedark.com.
